  1. These glorified stan accounts need to chill. This is a $60M movie with an enormous promo campaign courtesy of Amazon's deep pockets. The director's previous movies didn't have that. Again, Call Me By Your Name cost under $4M. https://twitter.com/Luiz_Fernando_J/status/1784654243846144228 I get it, they homoerotically ate churros and that's Film Twitter catnip. But let's try to be somewhat objective.
  2. I'm seeing analysts praise Challengers for opening above House of Gucci but all things considered, HoG's opening was more impressive. It did it with the pandemic and without the reviews - the true measure of starpower is opening a movie without the benefit of strong reviews. A good example: Julia Roberts with Sleeping with the Enemy.
  3. Definitely about the right connections with her. She's probably devoted and serious about her work and she has some talent, but you don't watch Challengers going wow wow her talent. She struggles with the adult part of the role.
  4. Why are overseas audiences so REPELLED by Abigail? The comedic tone not clicking with them?
  5. do we buy the 5m Saturday that deadline is reporting, or are they going off of the 5m the studio was estimating as early as Saturday morning? also kinda off topic but "props" to Amy Pascal for still working after her wildly racist emails about Obama were exposed. Hollywood selective outrage strikes again
  6. The box office may be dead but you at least you don't necessarily need big box office to build a legendary career. Remember the endless and ruthless "Nicole Kidman is Box Office POISON" in the late 2000s? She had the last laugh. https://twitter.com/andysignore/status/1784563708871549178
  7. Holy hell did Speed play like gangbusters in the theatre - constant laughs, cheers and claps. Wild how it doesn't look dated at all because all the stunts and effects are in camera.
  8. Brad Pitt is enormously overrated as a box office draw. He had a couple of hits in 94/95 then spent a decade flopping/underperforming until Mr & Mrs Smith.
  9. It's interesting that Zendaya was able to WILL herself into stardom. She failed as a popstar (remember that flop song Replay?) and then quickly pivoted. I'm not saying she has no talent but she must have some powerful people behind her determined to make her a thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyLE48i4XY0
  10. What was your Speed experience like in '94? From what I understand, expectations for the movie were not high, until test screenings indicated the potential of a sleeper. Do you remember how it played?
  11. ALIEN making more than BKW this weekend............ Roadside Attractions’ Boy Kills World lands with a B- and PostTrak of 71%/50% definite recommend. The Bill Skarsgard movie will land outside the top 10 with around $1.6M. RSA will send out their figure a bit later. No surprise here with 70% guys buying tickets and 60% of the audience between 18-34. Biggest demo is 25-34 at 34%. Diversity pull was 52% Caucasian, 22% Latino and Hispanic, 13% Black, 9% Asian, and 3% other. The Moritz Mohr directed movie is playing best in the East, South & West with the AMC Burbank the tite’s highest grossing venue with close to $7k so far. Disney re-released the original Ridley Scott directed Alien this weekend which is now 45 years old. It did $606K yesterday for what’s shaping up to be a $1.78M result toward the bottom of the top 10 chart. That gets the sci-fi horror pic’s lifetime cume to $83.8M unadjusted for inflation. This re-release is occurring far in advance of the next reboot, Alien: Romulus, which is from Fede Alvarez and opening on Aug. 16.
  12. Some Deadline updates Roadside Attractions’ Boy Kills World lands with a B-. The Bill Skarsgard movie will land outside the top 10 with around $1.6M. RSA will send out their figure a bit later.
  13. Is this really "beating" projections? I get that she looks pretty and "serves" in a dress but these box office analysts and film accounts should try to be a little less biased. FilmUpdates obnoxiously spammed every dress she wore. https://twitter.com/Luiz_Fernando_J/status/1784219206763893032
  14. I saw The Mummy on the big screen for the first time and it was glorious to behold. I'm seeing Speed on the big screen for the first time today. Then Alien. You can still catch good movies in theatres. They're just from the last century! (that said I did like Challengers despite Zendaya struggling to play the older part of her role)
  15. Very curious what Challengers Cinescore will be. It won't be in the A's. Will it be in the B's or C's? I say B or B-.
  16. Thanks. Do you think this is accurate? Early industry estimates for previews on Roadside Attractions’ Boy Kills World movie is around $500K. The Lionsgate’s sister label uber-action movie that was acquired out of TIFF Midnight is looking at a single digit opening. RT reviews are at 63% fresh, audiences are at 60%. PostTrak moviegoers were hard on the film at 3 stars, 66% positive and a 67% guy turnout.
  17. Im sure you're right but they insist it is lol https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status/1783875288520331290
  18. Wait, Deadline is making it sound like 1.9M includes EA. What is the truth? Amazon MGM Studios’ Challengers, starring Zendaya and directed by Luca Guadagnino, made $1.9M in previews, a figure $100K shy of what Universal’s Cocaine Bear did. The tennis sexy romcom is hoping to open to $15M for the weekend. Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s Unsung Hero made $1.67M in previews. It’s important to note that for both films not all their bread was made last night from previews, but includes early advance screening money. More..
  19. Has any wide release every performed this poorly in previews?
  20. Well said and I agree about Zendaya. I said the same thing in the other thread. I buy her as a teen, less so as a wife and mom.
