  1. If the finale to the GOTG series is flopping and barely has any hype, I don’t see a Captain America movie without Chris Evans or a movie that looks like a Disney+ show doing well. And Thunderbolts will probably flop even harder than those two.
  2. I don’t think Barbie will be that big of a success. Minions already has a solid base of families seeing it and the meme crowd is just a boost on top of that. But for Barbie, I don’t really see who the target audience would be.
  3. Sicario 2 and Rambo: Last Blood were both right wing friendly movies and didn’t perform that great. Sicario 2 is literally about Mexican cartels smuggling terrorists into the U.S. I think Top Gun’s over performance is due to it feeling like an 80s movie with today’s technology, which is appealing to the older crowd. And it’s drawing in young people who wouldn’t have seen it otherwise from the rave reviews and great word of mouth. I had no interest in seeing it until the reviews came out and it’s my second favourite movie of the year.
  4. The top 5 pandemic era box office runs imo are: 1. Top Gun 2 2. Demon slayer 3. Nwh 4. Eeaao 5. Dog
  5. I wouldn’t be surprised if DS2 beats Civil War for the worst MCU legs. It’s about as confusing and GA-unfriendly as an mcu movie can get
  6. Considering that Ocean’s 8 opened to $42m, I think The Lost City is doing great
  7. X doesn’t look very good based on the trailers, I’m not surprised that it’s doing poorly
  8. Three out of four of the last DC movies flopped and it's still covid. $130m is still a good opening and it'll probably leg out like other older skewing movies like Dune/NTTD.
  9. It will have a lot less families than a typical cbm though. I’m pretty sure presales are highest among older teens to young millennials so it could actually be quite presale heavy.
  10. I'm surprised Matrix is flopping this bad. The trailers had good numbers and the original is still well known to all ages.
  11. A lot of places are having record numbers of cases and have to shut down due to fears over hospital capacity. The average time for a covid patient to recover is around 3 weeks, which is a huge strain on capacity. If Canada was smart they would have built new temporary hospitals for covid patients like China managed to do within the first month of covid. But instead with all of our braindead PC premiers, we’re bleeding hospital staff because they’re too greedy to pay them a competitive wage or have decent working conditions.
  12. I don’t think that general audiences will show up during the holidays anywhere near pre-Covid levels. Especially with Omicron deterring the older audiences that usually boost late legs. Even if nwh has an $85m second weekend and a 2.5x multiplier that’s a decent result considering the circumstances.
  13. At the theatre I work at in Winnipeg, Canada, the Saturday for Ghostbusters was very busy. It was our second biggest day so far since covid. The biggest was in August with Paw Patrol's opening Saturday and Free Guy's second Saturday (which actually did better than its opening Saturday). That was also one of two weekends without covid restrictions so that could explain why it did better than all of September-November.
