So an ultimate cut of a bad film makes the movie into a mediocre cut, yes?

Or it could be even worse.  It isn't like extended or director's cuts usually make a movie better.  Generally things are cut for a reason.

Last nights NCAA title game was second most  watched ever.

No it wasn't.  It was the second most watched college basketball game on cable.  10 million less people watched this year than last year.

Critic smack down cost BvS at least $100  million for this movie

The movie being bad and not liked by the audience cost it money.  Not the critics.  If this hadn't opened huge you might have an argument but it opened to $166 mil and then dropped like a rock and also dropped huge in just about every market.  That isn't critic driven but audience driven.  Audiences don't like the movie.  Plain and simple.

What makes you think people seeing it on Netflix etc are going to love the film when people who saw it in the cinemas seemingly didnt?

Yes films like Batman Begins, that most people really liked, can drive up interest in sequels when they hit DVD/TV etc but i cant see any reason to believe this is the case for BvS or a 30 minutes longer version thereof.

Yep.  It is clear at this point that the general audience didn't care for BvS so there is zero reason to think that is going to change.

To lighten up the tone of this thread...

What's everyone on this forum excited for that's coming out this April?

I'm genuinely excited for Jungle Book especially with the early reactions.  That is about it for this month.  But can't wait for Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse in May.

Also DH2's true OW was 125m. BVS's true OW is 138m. So removing previews it's falling harder and doing so, like you mentioned, without summer weekdays (DH2 did 14m more Mon-Thu; 57m vs 43m)

And DH2 faced Captain America, a $65 mil opener, in week 2.  This has zero competition and is still falling like a rock.

I kinda feel bad for DC fans because clearly they want to see these characters on the big screen and have to settle for movies that have been, at best, divisive. Like earlier I stumbled upon someone in the comments section of a movie news website saying the movie is great and that critics suck and posting like three or four articles about why the critics are wrong. Newsflash: when you have to resort to such cheap tactics to back up you're opinion and convince yourself you're right, it only means that you're aware the movie in question isn't very good.

I don't even care about the film.  I haven't seen it any won't see it because I haven't enjoyed anything that Snyder has directed, hated Man of Steel and my friends who I trust didn't like the film.  But acting like you have somehow been wronged because people didn't like your film or that you "have been put through" something is hilarious to me (not you, the guy I was responding to originally).

131 Million "in the bank" so to speak. CJohn was right about this one; the sky really is the limit this we.

I guess this has been asked before, but I don't remember because of a spontaneous dizzyness: has there ever been a movie this badly "damaged" by reviews that nonetheless performed beyond expectations like this one? Transformers maybe?

    This hasn't performed beyond expectations.

  9. The conspiracy theories are beyond hilarious.  The amount of critics that Disney would have to bribe to have an effect is gigantic and the bad publicity that would come out if it was true (and it would get publicized for sure because one of the 100+ critics that didn't like the movie would say something) would be far worse for Disney than the minimal positives of Batman vs. Superman slightly underperforming).  And if Disney/Marvel had incentive to bribe critics about movies to bring them down it would be the Fox and Sony Marvel properties (pre-Spidey agreement) they would want to do that to since they have more skin in those games since if those movies perform poorly Marvel may someday get those properties back.  And yet, the last 2 X-Men movies, Wolverine and Deadpool all got good to very good reviews.

Agree with this Batfleck is legendary.

I think a problem is that these crictics were going in expecting a low energy high facemelting popcorn marvel film with a witty quip every other scene.

Or maybe they were actually expecting a good movie?  Some of the most scathing reviews from critics were by people like Faraci that actually like Man of Steel.

WB can follow the Disney model in which case this would be anything but a "peak"

    IMHO.

Eh, a big part of the draw of this movie was Batman,Superman being on screen in the same movie for the first time.  Adding Aquaman and other Justice League characters that nobody really care about isn't going to really increase the box office potential of the films.  I do agree that this may not be the peak though because if WB can actually find a director worth a damn to helm these films I think there is some untapped market.

Star Wars could be pulled from theaters after this weekend and it would still be an astounding gross.

Carol has definitely grown on me. I actually like it now. Really amazing performances from both leads. And the story is kind of relevant.

Looks like me and Gopher agree on another film.

Yep, this weekend is disappointing because it ends any chance at a billion but in the grand scheme of things nothing this movie does box office wise is really a true disappointment when you fly past Avatar's domestic record.

Even though SW has held better than Avatar on both the Thursdays, it has followed that up with much smaller Friday jumps.

    1st Thursday, 2nd Friday

    SW : -27.9%, +80%

    Avatar : -32.2%, +107.1%

    2nd Thursday, 3rd Friday

    SW : -18.3% +50%

    Avatar -20.2% +71.5%

Avatar had a 117% bump on 4th Friday. I think it will be closer to 100% from SW, giving it ~12m.

While that is true and a number like that wouldn't surprise me, movies that play well with families and kids tend not to increase as much on Fridays during the holiday season and then see larger jumps on weekends post holidays so it will be interesting to see if Star Wars follows that model.

Also, they predict that TFA will finish its domestic run with 900-910 M

Which is, honestly, the absolute floor right now

Yep, basically zero chance it finishes that low.  Jurassic World did an additional $132 mil at this point in its run which would bring TFA right near 900 mil and TFA is clearly going to do quite a bit more than Jurassic World did for the rest of its run.
