Thats what happens when you make a sequel without the breakout star of the original

I think having a marketing campaign that made the movie look incredibly bland didn't help and it doesn't help that based on the audience reviews it isn't even a crowd pleaser.  The bottom line is the marketing didn't establish that there was going to be a single interesting character in this movie, none of the money shots they've showed in the trailers were anything special and the movie isn't giving us anything we haven't seen before.

agreed, and its not just their animation. I am sure you have heard of Rumours of Disney paying off Critics, I don't know whether its true. But let's be honest here, as much as I like Disney, they are definitely imposing their will, as in Critics see a Disney film, its almost like.. They are afraid of writing a negative review and offending this Giant.

Look at the big budgeted Disney Films out in 2016, Jungle Book, Zootopia and Civil War, all above 90+ RT score. Alice is an exception, but does JB and CW really deserves 90+ RT scores? They look more like 70/80+ RT score movies to me, and its not just that.... The same critics are writing down and putting negative reviews for Disney's competitors (eg Other Superhero Films that releases in close proximity to their beloved 3 movies i stated above).

It sounds BS to me tbh, I love Disney and its branding, but I think Critics are giving too much credit and some what lowering their expectations when reviewing Disney Movies.

Lol.  Disney isn't paying off critics.  The people on this board who have pushed that agenda are fucking morons.

    No.

I have a friend who saw 0 Marvel movies previously to this one and he didn't like it. It is his fault, tho. Not blaming the movie here. But the truth is you need to see every movie in the MCU not named Thor or Guardians of the Galaxy to understand everything.

I don't think Ant-Man is really that necessary either.  The Iron Man, Captain America and Avengers movies are all important though.

Dude, argue all you want, but it's a fact that Easter Monday means lower drops than usual. Just look at Easter Mondays every year versus the other Mondays around it and it's not even close to being arguable.

Movies drop, on average, about 50% on Easter Monday versus around 75% normally.

Yep and this year Batman v. Superman's 55% drop was the highest in the top 10, a number of films dropped below 50% and Zootopia dropped only 20%.  You also had more schools out of session then which contributes to higher weekdays as well.

What's extremely disappointing is these type of reactions to a $180m+ open (not to mention the massive OS haul).

Yep, only the 5th highest grossing weekend of all time. Oh no, what a travesty.  I can't wait for people to be disappointed if Episode VIII only opens up to like $225 million next year.

  7. 3 minutes ago, Baumer said:

Thats a huge number. But it also tells us nothing in terms of what the weekend number will be. Range is probably 180-225.1 :)

Yep.  I feel like The Force Awakens has completely thrown opening weekend expectations out of wack for people when there are some that are disappointed with $25 million in previews or a potential $180 million opening weekend.  Similar to people slamming Batman v. Superman opening up to $166 which while maybe a little below expectations was still gigantic (now the rest of that movies run is another story altogether).

Its not about wanting it one way or the either.... good grief I am one of the biggest Disney stans on this board (just look at my screenname!) but I also have been tracking the numbers long enough to know that while 1b is knocked down a lot every year its still a difficult milestone to reach as evidenced by the fact that 99% of films cannot get there every year!

I want both of them to hit 1B so that Disney can have 4 1B grossers this year - I just think it will be an uphill climb IF it happens.

Disney would have a really good chance at having 5 1B grossers this year if Jungle Book and Zootopia both hit that mark with Civil War, Rogue one and Finding Dory still to come.

hmm.... I think that 1B is really going to be a stretch for both Zoo and TJB - not downplaying either film, but Zoo has no more territories to open in (granted that Japan weekend figure is only 2 days) and I don't think TJB has anything major left either and it hasn't doubled it's opening China gross yet.

Jungle Book still has South Korea and Japan releases left.

But it's on pace for a 62 mill weekend.

Yeah, I'm failing to see how a roughly 40% drop after a 100+ million weekend can be seen as anything other than fantastic.  And in fact, while I probably missed something because I only took a quick look,  I think the only $100+ mil openers with a sub 40% second weekend drop were Spiderman, Shrek 2 and The Force Awakens and both Shrek 2 and The Force Awakens benefited from holidays in their second weekend.

Maybe now theyll learn their lesson and stop throwing money away.

From his last few big budget leading roles post thor.

In the Heart of the Sea had a $100M budget and made just $25M DOM

Blackhat had a budget of $70M and made $8M DOM

Red Dawn had a budget of $65M and made $44M DOM

Red Dawn was actually filmed and originally scheduled for release before Thor (although it did actually get released before Thor).

Well, BoxOffice revised its OW estimate downward, so here's my revised projections.

    First Weekend: $22 million

    Second Weekend: $14.4 million (-34.5%)

    Third Weekend: $8.93 million (-37.9%)

    Fourth Weekend: $6.29 million (-29.5%)

    Fifth Weekend: $4.46 million (-29.2%)

    Sixth Weekend: $1.95 million (-56.3%)

    PROJECTED SIX-WEEK DOMESTIC: $74.2 million (3.38x)

Why are you giving Huntsman good holds?  It isn't going to have sub 40% holds.

You are also a person that did not like it. So why should you say any different. BvS is a dark movie hell freakin

      Hide contents

Superman dies in it there were people bawling in the theaters at his funerals

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha.  Yeah, no.

    Spoiler

And Superman didn't die.  Well I guess you can make the case he did but they made it obvious they were bringing him back to life or that he is isn't actually dead.

The negative press, all the clickbaity articles, the relentless nagging and reporting of BvS' box office run is doing that, + the wom of course, I have never seen another film under such scrutiny to inform everyone of how TERRIBLY it dropped, plenty of blockbusters have dropped terribly as well, HP7-2 dropped 72 % on second weekend, I don't remember anyone writing articles everywhere about that.

Regardless of what you think of the film, it has been treated unfairly and it's been ridiculously overblown. Whatever man.

About HP7-2, it's a great f**** movie, and yet it dropped 72 %, it was incredibly frontloaded for sure but what the hell?

Yeah, comparing this to the 8th movie in a franchise that had a large but limited fanbase makes a ton of sense.  Harry Potter wasn't going to add a whole bunch of new fans or grow its audience at this point.  And that film still had substantially better legs than what BvS will wind up with while facing actual competition.  DH2 faced a 65 million opener in its second week and then multiple 30+ million openers in its 3rd week.  BvS has faced absolutely nothing and it is still dropping like a rock every day.

You just proved people don't watch it after reading reviews rather than bad word of mouth. 7 in 10 critics dislike or hated the movie. 7 in 10 audiences liked or thought the movie was ok

Yeah, I don't buy for a second that 7 out of 10 people liked this movie when it is having some of the worst legs we have ever seen for a major blockbuster.
