Agreed. Never did get the hate for this film. Granted it wasn't the most deserving to win BP that year over contenders like The Two Towers and The Pianist, but I get that the Academy wanted to recognize a musical again, and this was the best one to do it with. Just tons of fun with a great soundtrack. I mean c'mon, how can anyone not love this scene:

 

 

That alone made it deserving of a nom.

It's a shadow of what someone like Fosse could've done (and feels like Fosse-lite, mostly), but it's still entertaining enough.

I feel like general audiences must have been into it since only Gladiator and ROTK were more successful at the box office among 21st century BP winners. Obviously people liked it at the time.
