It amazing to see how many movies seem to be influenced by this. I LOVED the first half. Found it so intriguing, but then it not only drags but loses all of its sense of thrill and mystery and becomes very lackluster and average.

now that you mentioned it I do remember first half being better I think

Pretty neat first half, some great action scenes/set pieces, but then completely loses itself in the second half and starts to drag.  I won't fault the film against it since obviously the effects in this were great for the time, but good lord are there some unintentionally hilarious moments in regards to VFX.  Generally VFX are the last thing I care about in films but they were painfully obvious at times (the cuts on a face when they were cut by that laser machine was particularly noticeable).  It has a cool concept and its set designs are obviously very well done and detailed, but it really needed to have a much stronger second act, which it just lacks and makes me feel like this was a missed opportunity.  I know there's a remake in development hell and I think it's one of those few films that could actually have a remake come in handy (provided that they don't fuck it up and make it worse). C
