The weekend box office reached a new low for 2018, a trend that will continue from now on as the weather gets better and we approach the summer. Total admissions barely topped 100K admissions (106,515), since no new films opened above 10K admissions. Three death-related titles opened in the Top 10 but neither seem to have any chances of a notable run. 'Red Sparrow' had a solid sophomore hold and will cross the 100K-admission milestone in the next few days. Oscar Best-Picture winner, 'The Shape of Water', managed to stay flat from last weekend, although I was expecting at least a small increase. It will still reach 100K admissions, as wiill 'Three Billboards'. 'Black Panther' is on its way to top 'Iron Man' and become the second-biggest stand-alone MCU film, behind 'Doctor Strange' (169K admissions). It has achieved the second-best multiplier among MCU films (just ahead of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier') and will pass the MCU's best multilplier, that of the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (3.44x) any day now. Nothing notable for films below the Top 10. 'Tadeo Jones 2' will soon top 50K admissions.

Next week, 'Tomb Raider' seems to be the likeliest winner of the weekend. 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life' (2003) opened to 43K admissions so I think this one can top 30K admissions. Check out next week's report for a comaprison with 'Prince of Persia', 'Warcraft', 'Assasin's Creed' and others.

A tomb and the box office were successfully raided this weekend. Cumulative admissions (114,259) were up from last week but down from last year (135,821) by 16%. Lara Croft almost matched the opening of the previous 'Lara Croft' film, from 2003. Overall, its opening was average for a video-game adaptation, as seen below:

Video-game adaptations
Title National OW Release date Total admissions Multiple
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 60,569 Thu 20 May 10 176,791 2.92
Assassin's Creed 53,502 Thu 5 Jan 17 133,185 2.49
Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life 43,000 Fri 3 Oct 03 > 108,000 2.79*
Tomb Raider 40,350 Thu 15 Mar 18
Warcraft 36,787 Thu 9 Jun 16 96,591 2.63
Angry Birds 32,214 Thu 12 May 16 94,718 2.94
Resident Evil 2 (2004)** 24,238 Fri 22 Oct 04 65,128 3.03***
Need for Speed 20,048 Thu 20 Mar 14 70,465 3.51

*For this calculation, 120,000 admissions were used as an estimate of the final total.

**This is the biggest 'Resident Evil' film, both in terms of opening weekend and total gross. The performance of the rest can be found here. 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter' (2017) sold 25,749 admissions in total.

***For this calculation, 73,500 admissions were used as an estimate of the final total.

'Red Sparrow' and 'Three Billboards' crossed 100K admissions. The prior has surpassed all Jennifer Lawrence films, including all 'X-Men' films and all 'Hunger Games' films, except for 'Mockingjay – Part 1' (128,094 admissions). 'Red Sparrow' will top that too over the coming week. Oscar Best Picture winner, 'The Shape of Water' had the sharpest drop of the Top 10. Perhaps, after it won the Oscars, word got out into the mainstream that it is actually not as good as the hype suggests (this could also explain the not so impressive hold of last weekend), although I've got no data to prove this theory otherwise. 'Tadeo Jones 2's monopoly of the animated market will end next weekend with the arrival of 'Sherlock Gnomes', although it has done quite well even if it plummets next week. 'Death Wish' clearly had worse word-of-mouth than 'Death of Stalin' as their relative ranking got reverted on their sophomore frame. 'Black Panther' has officially achieved the best multiple of the MCU. It will surpass 'Iron Man' any day now and could even top 'Iron Man 2' (154,360 admissions). Nothing of note for the two other openers near the bottom of the chart.

Hey, sorry, I totally forgot about this. I've seen some other films by the same director ('God Loves Caviar' and 'El Greco') and I did not like the films at all. Their plot was ok, but the directing, the absolute lack of music in the background and the uninteresting dialogues made the films really bad and it's a shame because these stories had great potential. Furthermore, with regard to 'Kazantzakis', I totally disagree with the message of the trailer that his dispute against the Orthodox Church is analogous to "light vs darkness". I don't even know what the dispute was about but when it is defined in those terms, you can tell that the portrayal of this dispute will be very biased towards one side. I'm not saying I'd never watch it but I don't really care for it at all.

On what ended up being a horrific weekend, Lara Croft raided the tomb (and the dead box office) once again. Uprisings and detectives were no match against her and despite a record of 6 releases entering the Top 10, cumulative admissions reached a new low for 2018, falling into five digits at around 95,000. This total was, however, identical to last year's. 'Tomb Raider' will most likely top 100K admissions, so it has certainly been successful enough. 'Pacifim Rim 2' and 'Sherlock Gnomes' both had dismal openings compared to their predecssors ('Pacific Rim' and 'Gnomeo and Juliet'), which opened to 16,701 admissions in September 2013 and 20,456 admissions in February 2011, resepctively. The latter's opening is even worse when you consider the complete lack of competition. Other openers were even more disappointing. 'You Were Never Really Here' had the best per-screen average, at 446 admissions. Conversely, 'Red Sparrow' is doing well and may soon become 2018's second biggest film, behind 'Fifty Shades Freed'. 'Tadeo Jones 2' experienced its first big drop, while another animated film, 'Peter Rabbit', had very quiet previews despite being available on 44 screens nationwide.

The weekend box office has sank to new depths this year, with total admissions less than 80,000. All holdovers in the Top 10 dropped by more than 50%. And while newcomers collectively made up more than half of the weekend admissions, all films had small openings, resulting in an overall quiet weekend. Next weekend is Easter weekend, during which Friday and Saturday are dead quiet, so the weekend gross will drop even more. A 2-week period of school holidays starts today (Monday), meaning that animated and family films may see a boost to their sales. I have not mentioned the #1 film yet (and for that matter, any specific film's title), only because it doesn't seem to matter at all in these doldrums. 'Ready Player One' tanked in comparison to NA and China. The film's video-game vibe had already been addressed by 'Tomb Raider' 2 weeks ago and the futuristic virtual-reality element probably doesn't resonate with Greeks, who have to face the hard reality of poverty, unemployment and existential threats to national security (apologies for the digression into politics). 'Tomb Raider' will soon top 100K admissions, which 'The Shape of Water' has just achieved. 'Red Sparrow' has crossed 150K admissions and will soon surpass 'The Post' to become the second-biggest film of 2018.

In other news, 'Coco' has now achieved a multiplier north of 8.2. This is better than any Pixar film (data exists for films since 2003), beating 'Finding Nemo'. This stands even when you include the 3–D re-release (28,110 admissions) to the original release (340,731 admissions), which makes the multiplier 8.09. 'Ferdinand' (11.9x multiplier) had surpassed Blue Sky Studios' best mulitplier a long time ago ('Rio 2' at 5.2x). 'Coco' has a small chance of beating 'Zootopia' (139,122 admissions) and 'Moana' (140,905 admissions). 'Ferdinand' has a small chance of beating 'Smurfs 3' (156,267 admissions) and 'The Boss Baby' (158,090 admissions).

The first 3 months of the year have already passed. Based on weekend admission figures only, 2018 is trailing all 3 previous years (2015, 2016 and 2017) by 5-11%. It is still early to tell what will happen by the year's end and the difference is so small in absolute numbers (100-200K admissions) that sometimes all it takes is a single weekend to make a difference. The leading film of the year is by far 'Fifty Shades Freed', even though it is the least successful film of the franchise. Have a look at 2018's Top 10 here.

Important correction for the previous weekend: 'Leo Da Vinci: Missione Monna Lisa', which ranked 9th for the weekend was omitted. This has now been corrected. This week it ranked 10th.

As expected, this weekend, Easter weekend in Greece, was the quietest of the year so far, selling a grand total of 27,567 admisssions. It was almost as quiet as Easter 2016 (20,457 admissions), while last year, 'The Fate of the Furious 8' inevitably raised the weekend's total admissions to 70,230. So far, 'Tomb Raider' has crossed 200K admissions and 'Red Sparrow' became the second-biggest film of the year, while 'A Quiet Place' managed a quiet opening at #1. Next weekend will see a rebound due to cinemas being empty (and most of them closed) on Great Friday and Great Saturday (last two days before Easter). Monday (a holiday) sold almost the same number of tickets as the entire weekend: 23,871. Three films managed to sell more tickets on Monday than on the entire weekend: 'Game Night', 'Sherlock Gnomes' and 'Leo Da Vinci: Missione Monna Lisa'.

The last two weekends have been very quiet. Excluding Easter weekend, they are the two lowest weekends of the year so far, in terms of admissions, selling just above 80K and 50K admissions respectively. 'A Quiet Place' has achieved 3 consecutive weekends in first place and is by far the least-attended film that has achieved this feat in the last 7 years (at least). This can only be explained by the fact that the whole industry has completely tanked. Hopefully, 'Avengers: Infinity War' will infuse some life in this otherwise dead market next weekend.

'Avengers: Infinity War' sold 35,024 admissions on Thursday. That is right in between the opening days (Thursdays as well) of:

'Captain America: Civil War': 36,920 admissions ---> OW: 101,800 admissions

and

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice': 34,735 admissions ---> OW: 122,428 admissions

It's hard to tell if it will be closer to CA3 or BvS. The prior opened during the Easter break (schools and universities were off). The latter opened on a holiday weekend (Friday was a national holiday – schools, universities and most workplaces were closed). The fact that IW opened so big without any holiday boost means that it could go even higher over the weekend. I think its weekend tally will probably end up somewhere in between CA3 and BvS (with a shot at beating BvS), but nowhere near the superhero record: 'Spider-Man 3' (159,000 admissions).

In terms of gross, Deadline reported that it is an all-time opening-day record among superhero films, but obviously not a record in admissions.

'Infinity War' did not reach infinity but in the situation that Greece is in, this is the best it could've achieved:

129,549 admissions over the weekend. 150,496 admissions including Wednesday previews. Comps in the post above.

MCU record opening. 300,000 admissions possible. More tomorrow...

Despite reaching shockingly unprecedented levels around the globe, 'Infinity War' did not manage to do so in Greece, which has been in a state of continuous impoverishment for the last 8 years. This is quite evident with big blockbusters that fail to match the records achieved elsewhere. '300' still holds that opening weekend record at about 320,000 admissions, while the next film is more than 100,000 admissions lower: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' at 219,696 admisisons. Both were released more than a decade ago. In fact, the biggest opening of the last decade is '2012' at 184,475 admissions (released in late 2009). In light of the above, 'Infinity War' has done quite well.

19 Ant-Man 18,674 47,985 17/09/15 2.57

'Infinity War' is almost guaranteed to beat 'The Avengers' and become the highest-grossing MCU film so far. Thanks to selling 20,947 admissions during Wednesday previews, it even has a shot at beating 'Batman v Superman' (277,245 admissions), which would make it the 5th biggest superhero film on record. These previews explain why it did not beat the opening day of 'Civil War', which had no previews. If it beats 'BvS', then it's got:

  • The Dark Knight: 339,520 admissions
  • The Dark Knight Rises: 346,585 admissions
  • Spider-Man 3: 366,987 admissions
  • Spider-Man 2: 385,700 admissions

However, I think it is unlikely that it will beat any of the above 4 films.

The entire weekend sold 158,758 admissions, but when removing the admissions of 'Infinity War', the total is a depressing 29,209 admissions. All holdovers droppped heavily, selling only 18,420 admissions, while non-Avengers newcomers sold an even worse 10,789 admissions in total. At least there's 'Deadpool 2' and 'Solo' to look forward to, otherwise the next two months will be dead quiet...

Yeah don’t compare anything pre-2010 with post-2010 , life here changed dramatically. Infinity war did great ,all things considered.

I agree that life has changed dramatically and I have stressed this enough in my report. That doesn't mean we can't compare. It just means we have to be careful about the conclusions we draw from these comaprisons. I have said that, all in all, 'Infinity War' has done quite well, which I don't think is an unreasonable conclusion. However, there is no way I could call it "great". It earned less than 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (140,443 admissions) and that says a lot already...

'Infinity War' blasted past all other 2018 films and all other MCU films last weekend to become the most-attended film of the franchise and will pass 'Batman v Superman' (277,245 admissions) on Monday to become the 5th biggest comic-book film since 2003 (no data on 'Spider-Man' and 'X-Men'). Its weekend drop was quite average for a superhero film, below that of the 'Avengers' (49.9%) and 'The Dark Knight' (52.0%) but above 'Age of Ultron' (62.6%) and 'Spider-Man 3' (62.7%). Although this was no done deal last week, the film will almost certainly cross 300K admissions and it even appears capable of giving 'The Dark Knight' a run for its money to become the 4th biggest comic-book film. Since it faces no competition for another 10 days, until 'Deadpool 2' arrives, this seems like a considerable possibility. Overall, an impressive performance for a country where Marvel has never really been a thing (except for Spider-Man). The year is far from over, but 'Infinity War' already has a shot at remaining the year's top film.

Other holdovers had very impressive holds for unknown reasons (there was no holiday) but overall the market is tanking, when the Avengers are taken out of the equation: 91,299 admissions were sold in total last weekend and only 37,527 admissions, when subtracting 'Infinity War's earnings.

Marvel's epic superhero mash-up finished in first place for a 3rd consecutive weekend. It saw another massive drop, although weekdays, which have accounted for 36% of its weekly earnings, have really helped this film push past all expectations. None of this would've been presumed probable following its opening. It is almost a foregone conclusion by now that it will top both 'Dark Knight' sequels to become the 3rd biggest superhero film, only behind 'Spider-Man 3' and 'Spider-Man 2', with around 350K admissions. In fact, if its drops are not very big from now on it could go even higher, although with 'Deadpool 2' and 'Solo' coming up, it is quite unlikely. The film has objectively performed better and better each week, even though its weekend drops may seem a bit inconsistent with its success. If it reaches 350K admissions, it will have achieved a total that is 2.5 times the average for an MCU film so far (much better than its US performance) and its total will be 100 times more than the second-biggest film of the series, 'Marvel's the Avengers', which sold 242,565 admissions. By all standards, this is truly a terrific result and it shows how successfully Marvel's model has worked out.

The market has otherwise been abysmally quiet. Cumulative admissions were 58,385, the third-lowest result for the year (and second-lowest when excluding Easter weekend). I don't even think that any of the other films merit a discussion. Horrible averages for openers, horrible drops for holdovers. Everyone's attention is now shifting to the opening of 'Deadpool 2'. The original opened to an unexpectedly high 77.8K admissions in February 2016 and ended with 217.8K admissions, so let's see if this one can beat its predecessor and if it can cross the 100K-admission milestone during its opening.

This weekend's cumulative admissions were back to 6 digits, with about 110K admissions, a feat attributable completely to 'Deadpool 2'. 'Deadpool 2' confirmed the popularity of the first film by opening 6.4% higher. That one was boosted by Valentine's Day falling on a Sunday, so the sequel's success is even more impressive. Next weekend sees the arrival of 'Solo', but the following Monday is a holiday, so 'Deadpool 2' may not fall too hard. The first one fell 59% anyway on its second weekend, so it's not easy to go worse than that. All factors considered, it is unlikely that 'Deadpool 2' will have a mutliple much smaller than the 2.8x achieved by its predecessor, so we may see it eclipse that film's 217.8K-admission total eventually.

15 Suicide Squad 61,555 207,982 25/08/16 3.38

*This number is an estimate. The number could be a few hundred admissions higher or lower, so 'Deadpool 2' and 'Spider-Man 2' may rank the other way around. Also, bear in mind that the "traditional" weekend before August 2005 lasted 3 days (Fri-Sun). After that it changed to 4 days (Thu-Sun), so 'Spider-Man 2' is still far more impressive and of course it remains the biggest superhero film on record (I don't have data for any superhero films that were released before 2003).

In other (significant) news, 'Infinity War' became the third biggest superhero film ever, after surpassing the two sequels of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. It had another precipitous fall, but thanks to strong midweek earnings (35% of last week's total), the film has achieved far more than what was considered likely. If the drops actually stop being that bad, it may even have a shot at 2nd place, ahead of 'Spider-Man 3'. This is where my report stops, as I don't think that there is anything remotely as interesting happening below the Top 2.

Even worse than the rest of the world, 'Solo' was a complete disaster in Greece, despite the holiday. The weekend figure makes this film a complete dud by all measures. It opened about 5 times lower than 'The Last Jedi' and 3 times lower than 'Rogue One. 'The Boss Baby' opened higher than it (23,936 admissions). 'Tomb Raider' opened about twice as big and 'Solo's opening was on par with 'Maze Runner 3' and 'The Shape of Water'. Wow. Just wow.

As for 'Deadpool 2', it had a terrible drop, in the same range as 'Batman v Superman', 'Justice League' and 'Captain America: Civil War'. However, all of them opened on a holiday weekend, which contributed to a bigger sophomore drop. 'Deadpool 2' had a holiday on its second weekend, which should have made its drop smaller. Nevertheless, its drop is on par with recent May superhero flicks, like 'Guardians 2' and 'X-Men: Apocalypse'. Its drop was also much worse than the original 'Deadpool's 59.1% drop. That film made 31,809 admissions on its 2nd weekend, but its cumulative admissions were at 154,884 by its second Sunday, so 'Deadpool 2' is still ahead. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it can hold on as much as 'Deadpool' so it may end up with a lower total (217,832 admissions). On the other hand, 'Deadpool' fell 68% (!) on its third weekend. All in all, the final gross of 'Deadpool 2' doesn't look like it will be far off from its predecessor on either side.

'Infinity War' had its worst drop and has had no drops below 50% so far. Defying all odds though, on Monday, it became the biggest film of the last two-and-a-half years, since December 2015, when the one-two punch of 'Worlds Apart' and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' took the nation by storm, selling more than 1 million admissions combined. It is inching closer and closer to 'Spider-Man 3' (367K admissions) but it remains unclear whether it can get there. It will need sub-50% drops to achieve it. Overall, an impressive feat, in a market that has crashed and been trapped in stagnation for the last 8 years.

Animated films have been holding well and it seems like 'The Incredibles 2' will be coming out just in time for the school summer holidays (mid-June), although its capacity to get anywhere near the all-time Top 10 animated films is completely unknown. Other openers have again performed dismally.

For those of you who are not persuaded that the Champions League final impacted attendance in Europe (and beyond) on Saturday, May 26, maybe this will perusade you:

Daily admission numbers for Solo in Greece

Thursday: 5,753

Friday: 3,886

Saturday: 4,876

Sunday (boosted by holiday Monday): 6,810

In contrast, last year, 'Pirates 5' led the same holiday weekend with nearly identical numbers on Saturday and Sunday: 12,346 and 12,515 admissions respectively. This strongly suggests a depressed Saturday for Solo.

On the same holiday weekend two years ago (the dates move around since the holiday is determined by Easter), 'Florence Foster Jenkins' actually sold more admissions on Saturday than on Sunday: 10,073 vs 8,383.

Note that the absence of the Champions League final wouldn't have led to anything much bigger than $63M weekend – it would have been up to $70M max, which is still a total disaster.
