Friday, March 1st

Earth Defense Force shatters the box office with 64.3M. After months without a major blockbuster this opening over $60M is no surprise. Tracking increased throughout the upcoming weeks. Earth Defense Force received mostly positive reviews and a B+ rating from audiences. It shouldn’t fall off as harshly as most blockbusters due to the unusually dead March. Livestream held well with a -37.5% drop. While still far behind initial predictions, Livestream is holding up surprisingly well. Nerdy opened with $4.5M and received mostly negative reviews. Families opted for the more positive My Peoples which dropped to $14.4M. My Peoples chances at $200 million are dead however it will lock a finish over $175M. Big win for the studio.

The Bronze Bow opened with a solid $18.1M as Christian audiences folked to the better than average Biblical inspired film. It received an A from audiences and could play well until Easter weekend. Student Film however is the story of the week, holding onto #1 with $19.9M and a sexy -28.7% drop. The film has topped $50M at the box office and could reach $100M. Friday, March 29th

Lilo and Stitch sent shock waves throughout the box office world with $111.4M opening weekend. This is a massive win for animated to live action films. It also proved how a good release date mixed with months of low competition (and upcoming dead zones) can boost a film to greater heights. Lilo and Stitch earned an A- from audiences and has knocked My Peoples from the primary family film. Lilo and Stitch is the highest opening of the animated classics to live action adoptions and could beat out the much anticipated Prince of Egypt in final numbers. We will find out in December/January. Meanwhile Student Film held well with $11.3M and the Bronze Bow dipped to $10.0M with a -44.8% drop.

Holy Fucking Shit! That’s the third biggest OW ever (until it gets blown back by Homeward, Odyssey 2, Scavenger Wars, POE and NOD).

Think it will do well. Not quite as well as Towering Inferno

Towering Inferno numbers actually do seem about right for it, but I could see it going higher. Can see an opening around $90m if all goes well.

*shrug* reviews aren't nearly as good as Towering Inferno.

I’m thinking a $95M/$275M rum for Cataclysmic. I’m concerned about Battletoads after how big Stitch was but then again, other than maybe Homeward, it has an easy run until Dan The Alpaca.

Battletoads may be the only thing purely servicing families come Memorial Day. Spark will have a lot of kid/family appeal, but as a PG-13 movie, it's limited there too. Zoldar is too weird for families, and Bioshock/God of War aren't gonna be kid friendly at all.
