As an updated variation on the formula set forth in Romancing the Stone, The Lost City is a fun action-comedy that succeeds in coasting on the star power of its two leads. Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have charisma to spare, and they’re both plenty of fun in their respective roles. They nail the comedic timing expected within the archetypes they’re playing, and they share a fun sense of chemistry with each other. The narrative is straightforward and the film admittedly doesn’t find enough for its funny, overqualified supporting cast to do, but it delivers crowd-pleasing laughs in the moments that matter most. In an era where it feels like the studio comedy has all but died off (or migrated away from theatres entirely in favor of heading to Netflix), The Lost City is exactly the kind of frothy but fun diversion worth seeing with a crowd.

This was a fun time. Sandra Bullock (continuing to defy age) and Channing Tatum make for a highly enjoyable screen pairing, even though I wasn't feeling the chemistry between them once things eventually took a turn for the romantic in the third act. They are backed by a solid supporting cast that includes a scenery-chewing Daniel Radcliffe and a hilarious glorified cameo from Brad Pitt. There's nothing especially challenging here, just an entertaining update on Romancing the Stone that provides a few hours of escapism from the harsh realities of the real world. B
