R$19M and 866k tickets were sold this weekend.

Like I predicted, Sound of Freedom had a good opening though not a breakout as some would expect. But a good one still. The movie, like in US, have been hit with a lot of controversies due to the free tickets being given out, also due to partnerships between the distributor and big right-wings portals that are very supportive of Bolsonaro and were also a big responsible on the given of free tickets. It have all been counted to the box office.

Not gonna toss opinions, at least I can be happy for a no.1 launch for a small drama.

Expend4bles had the second worst opening of the franchise (the second made R$8.4M, the third made R$7.8M, the first one made R$2.3M). Nosso Sonho entered the long list of local movies to disapoint in 2023, but Elis & Tom had a really solid debut for a documentary.

Blue Beetle have passed 2M admissions and with monday should have passed the total admissions of Birds of Prey.

Next weekend is Cinema Week, and will see the releases of The Creator, Saw X, Strays, The Marsh King's Daughter, the full release of Pérola, the re-release of Nosso Lar (Our Home) and Fairytale. Also some pre-screenings of Paw Patrol.

TAYLOR SWIFT, NATAL T-38

T-38 Cinemark: 8 showings, 2384 seats, 219 sold (9.19%)

T-38 Cinepolis: 8 showings, 1546 seats, 22 sold (1.42%)

T-38 Total: 16 showings, 3930 seats, 263 sold (6.69%)

Barbie (First day of pre-sales): 103.95%

Barbie (First day, but only those two chains): 113.85%

First of all, despite being announced as only being released by Cinemark and UCI, other chains like Cinépolis and Kinoplex have started selling tickets too.

Now my thoughts: A very strong first day, beating Barbie despite being low on two theaters, and since this event is a lot more expensive, we are about to have a seriously profitable weekend. On the other hand, being down two theaters does not look like an issue on the Cinemark side, they gave a LOT screens to it, it will be a Taylor-only weekend. No exaggeration, they gave it so many on saturday and sunday that I don't think there is space to any other movie. I kinda wonder if despite the success if it isn't too over the top?

There is the point of discussion of the frontloadness so to get this out of the way, yes I think it will be hella frontloaded, first because the amount of screens on the second weekend will decrease massively to only 5, and then while still very early I noticed a big gap where it is selling amazing on friday, decent on saturday and then barely nothing on sunday. We will indeed enjoy a huge opening weekend, one of the bests of the year, so I warn everyone to hold on to that.

Rio de Janeiro will become, if approved by the governor, the first state of the country to bring back the screen quota. This brings 3 demands to theaters: Theaters must show a minimum amount of brazilian movies a year, a minimum amount of days with at least one brazilian movie among the screenings and a limit on how many screens can show a single movie.

For example: If a theater have 1 screen, at year they must have screened at least 3 brazilian movies during 27 days, with these numbers increasing alongside the amount of screens (Like, if a theater have 2 screens they must show 4 movies on 28 days, if they have 3 screens then it's 5 movies on 29 days and so on).

The most important change though, theaters with more than 3 screens can't dedicate all of the screens to a single movie and have a max amount they can give to only one movie depending on how many screens it have, usually going around 50-30%. Taylor Swift might be one of the last cases of a whole multiplex being given to a single movie.

On this 3rd Cinema Week, 1.95M tickets were sold and R$25.4M on the box office. These first 4 days are better than the first Cinema week (1.8M tickets, R$20.57M box office) and worse than the second (2.4M tickets, R$26.9M box office).

6 movies managed to do more than 100k admissions this weekend. From all of the movies, the clear winner was Sound of Freedom that doubled the amount of admissions of last weekend and will cross the million admissions ASAP. Saw X also had a wonderful opening, beating all of the other openings on the franchise. Will soon also beat Jigsaw's R$8.6M to become the highest grossing on the franchise. The Nun 2 is about to pass the total of It Chapter 2 also.

Next weekend is the full release of Paw Patrol and also the release of The Equalizer 3, Wildflower and Rodeo Rock.

Once again, controversy has come regarding the distribution model of a brazilian movie. Nosso Sonho released on 500 screens, and despite the not impressive opening, it was hit by strong WoM. However, theaters cut to only 150 screens during Cinema Week while old movies like Blue Beetle and Meg 2 increased. The second weekend had sold out screens and excelent boost on admissions, but because the rollout was cut so hard it put a stop on the chances of going higher.

Screen quota can't come any sooner tbh

Some interesting movement of Eras Tour in my city. First, all of the chains are releasing now, it's not a limited release anymore. But one thing I noticed is that the local Cinemark is taking away screens for it on saturday and specially on sunday. I don't know the motivations but is the first time I've seen that happen here on a movie doing pre-sales.

That was a surprisingly great weekend??! For the first time the weekend after Cinema Week didn't see big falls, but rather we saw Sound of Freedom rising once again, Nosso Sonho also rising and having the best weekend since release, Paw Patrol and Equalizer 3 having the best openings of their franchises, Saw X becoming the best selling Saw movie, The Nun 2 closing on IT's R$61M. Seriously it was so good for the top 6, what happened here lol

Next weekend releases The Exorcist - Believer, Meu Nome é Gal, Uma Fada Veio me Visitar (Xuxa!) and Blackberry.

September started weak but fortunately the last few days were strong enough to put it ahead of the same period last year. This first weekend of october managed to push 2023's yearly numbers above 2022, though we are still a lot behind 2019's R$2.74B.

Feeling pretty good about today's holiday. Most of the movies I've checked are selling well so far, at least while this early, including Trolls 3, Paw Patrol, Meu Nome é Gal,Exorcist, Xuxa. Sound of Freedom is doing super well, expect another really strong weekend.

Some cities (Not mine) have already started selling for Killers of the Flower Moon, also seens to be doing well.
