Mexico Box Office | Planet of the Apes is king with $6.4M OW; good holds for Garfield and Challengers

Recommended Posts

Weekend table.  Resident Evil TLC has the highest 3-day OW of the year so far. But audiences are deserting Xander and the Assassin, both fall more than 60%. La La Land is flourishing in previews.

ER is actually getting better, down to 20.5 pesos.

Weekend actuals. Bad holds again for chart toppers (RE:TLC in this case), none of the recent "blockbusters" has broken out. Sing will get very close to 300M lc.

Today Monday is a holiday so expect solid numbers by Thursday.

Interesting article from Variety about Mexican BO in 2016:

All told, Hollywood, Mexican and other country movies earned a combined Pesos 15.25 billion ($782 million) box office at Mexican theaters last year, an all-time record, and 10.5% up on 2015. At 330.7 admissions, attendance in Mexico was another historic high, according to comScore stats.

But those records fell in a year when only two movies, “Captain America: Civil War” ($42.2 million) and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”($35.9 million) approached behemoth status in Mexico. Led by “Furious 7,” four movies punched those sort of numbers in 2015.
The top 10 titles in Mexico last year accounted for 30% of total box office, down from 38% in 2015, per comScore analysis.

What we did not have in 2016 was what I call the ‘Summer effect.’ Whenever you have a year of Hollywood blockbusters, that’s 2.5 months less exhibition space for U.S. independent and Mexican movies,” argued Luis Vargas, comScore’s Mexico City-based executive director for Latin America.

In 2016, in contrast, “many more movies grossed more money,” driving box office results as a whole, as exhibitors were able to fine tune bows and holdovers, he added.

Deadline reports an OD of $2.4M for BatB, aiming for an OW in the $9M vicinity. It will easily snatch the yearly OW crown, and may sneak into the all-time Top 20 OW in lc. ER is at its lowest in months, and Monday is a bank holiday so 4-day OW numbers will be hu-uge.

In the meantime, Logan is still the #1 movie of 2017 at $11.4M, Lego Batman at $8.2M, Kong $7.7M, Split $7.6M as of Thursday.

Deadline reports a $11.6M OW for BatB, highest March opening ever (BvS did 214M lc); it may even challenge Avengers and sneak into the Top 5. Would it include Monday bank holiday? If not then we're going for a ride, boys and girls! 2 years ago, it'd made $14.2M and 5 years ago, $17M.

These are all 3-day OW > 200M lc:

Civil War 351,538,816
Avengers2 290,773,534
Minions 249,086,907
Fast7 232,914,025
Avengers 225,812,421

Deadline is now reporting an OW of $11.8M (up from $11.6M) for BatB; that number would put it on top of Avengers' OW and the #2 movie of the year in just 3 days.

But, of course, Canacine website is a mess today and hasn't been updated. Damn you Bank Holiday.

Yesterday, offshore markets were led by China with $4.7M to rep 11% of the weekend ($49.5M cume to date). Mexico — where the Benito Juarez birthday holiday fueled a massive 32% of the weekend — followed with $3.8M ($15.6M to date).

(Deadline)

How big is that for Mexico? If $11,8M were that big already that must be huge!

It's huge, I dare to say one of the most lucrative Mondays ever - if not THE biggest!

Should be close to 300M lc up to Monday. Biggest opening for a movie rated "A", dethroning Minions; 5th biggest 4-day OW, and already in the all-time lc Top 60!

How high could it go? A 2x multiplier will zoom it to 600M lc ($31.5M).

Canacine site is still not updated s no official OW lc numbers published, but records will be broken.

31.5M...where this number places BaTB in the all time chart?
