it has been out for 2 weeks, but i guess many of this forum members might have not read it. interesting article about US films in china box office, Studio Report Card: The Widely Varied Performance of U.S. Distributors in China

http://chinafilmbiz....utors-in-china/

An excerpt:

Hollywood’s studios are all benefitting from China’s box office boom, but they’re not benefitting equally. Some have been much more effective than others at getting their films into Chinese movie theaters, and their financial results from China distribution have varied widely. The top grossing major studio, Paramount, has over the past couple of years earned more than four times as much from its China releases as the sixth place studio, Universal.

Very great analysis !

Some interesting highlights:

During the 18-month study period, Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros and Disney each exported 7 or more films to China, while Fox placed just 4 films there and Universal only 3.

On that score Paramount was also the leader with an average of $59 million per release, while Sony brought up the rear among major studios with barely a third of that figure, at $23 million per release.

Each revenue sharing film from Paramount can do an average of $59M at China box office. It is just big. :o

15. 擒爱记 1.4M yuan ($0.22M) New total: 4.1M yuan ($0.65M)

画皮2 (Painted Skin 2) posted a new opening record for a Chinese local film through 4 days with 299.3M yuan ($47.5M). It is also the third biggest all time opening after TF3 ($62M) and Titanic 3D ($74M) and second biggest summer opening beside TF3. With no major competition following whole month, it should comfortablely aim at around 800M yuan ($120M) as its total gross.

Lionsgate's The Hunger Games fell second place after two continuous spot at #1 with a cume of 165.5M yuan ($26.27M). Though 200M seems unlikely at this point, it still has a chance to clear the $30M mark in US dollars, which overal is quite a good number for an American centered light science-fiction adaption flick for youths.

Dreamworks Animation's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted grabbed another 23M yuan ($3.65M) to add its total gross at nearly $30M after 4 weeks' run. 200M yuan should happen by the end of this week.

Losing almost all its screens, Sony's Men in Black 3 pulled in 9.9M yuan, down 68% from the week before. It will end its run at about $83M, which is already a new record for the studio.

Pixar's Brave poorly dragged only 6.3M yuan ($1M) last week from less than 500 3D sites. Its 70% 2nd week drop is also the biggest ever for a 3D computer animation in China. In terms of China box office, Brave totally is a failure, if not a disaster, for Pixar and Disney. For comparions:

Recent Pixar films in China:

UP 95M yuan $13.5M

Toy Story 3 118M yuan $17M

Cars 2 77M yuan $12M

Brave 26.3M yuan $4.23M

Top Hollywood releases of 2012 (as of July 3):

1.Titanic 3D $155M

2. MI4 $107M

3. TA $91.42M

4. MIB3 $82.05M

5. Journey 2 $61M

6. Battleship $51

7. John Carter $42M

8. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted $29.33M

9. Sherlock Holmes 2 $29M

10. Wrath of the Titans $26.5M

11. The Hunger Games $26.27M

Sequel rule in China: The OW of a sequle will always match or surpass its former's total gross. So expect at least $30M opening for Catching Fire. ;)

So you're saying, TA2 will open to 91M or Avatar 2 at 200M OW?

I would think so. And even the OW could not match 91M or 200M, it should be at least close. Since they both wont come out until 2015.Expecting TF4 opens to at least 150M (3 days) summer 2014. Edited by firedeep

If that's the case then China will be the biggest market for these movies.
