His direction was average, indicative of a first-timer whose vision exceeded his present ability/skill.

 

 

Certainly didn't deserve to knock out Affleck or Bigelow.

Zheitlin made a great movie, but Bigelow made a better one, and it was a more challenging to make entertaining

Well since Zeitlin is my favorite of the nominees I'd obviously disagree. I think what he and Bigelow did was both hugely challenging for different reasons and they both succeeded to my mind. The way he took on serious issues with that kind of fairytale quality is wonderful.

I have now watched all but two of PTA's films, and even though Punch Drunk Love mainly baffled me I can say that he's a master filmmaker. May he have an amazing and long career

Punch Drunk Love is amazing as a romcom with basically no romcom cliches. Which two haven't you seen?

Magnolia, which seems rather daunting, and Hard Eight. 

 

Maybe I was in the wrong mood, but PDL was surprisingly bizarre and intense, out of his movies it felt the most challenging to me lol

OMG watch magnolia!!!!! Hard eight is probably his weakest, but it'll still really good. Nice performances all around.

Ooo, Magnolia is my favourite! You were talking about Robert Altman and that one feels kinda Altmany. Hard Eight is good, excellent performances especially from Baker Hall and Sam Jackson.

I keep switching between magnolia and Forrest Gump as my favorite of all time.

Imo Boogie Nights looses steam when the 80's started, but seriously the first hour and 20 minutes of that movie were some of the greatest cinema I've seen. Absolutely amazing. 

 

There Will Be Blood is just a beast of a movie, monumental, and so is The Master

I have magnolia in my blu ray player right now that I need to finish from last week. It's one I can just turn on whenever and marvel over and over.

It's so epically awesome. The music, the cinematography etc, etc. I can never decided which performance I like best. Sometimes I think Tom Cruise, sometimes I think William Macy, sometimes I think John Reily, sometimes I think Julianne Moore, etc, etc, etc, etc.

The 3 and a half hour runtime of Magnolia kinda scares me, but I'll try to watch that and Hard Eight sometime soon.
