Currently re watching PTA films and this was pretty good. Phillip Baker Hall,John C Reilly and SLJ are all good. It is a very good feature debut. 3.5/5

What a terrific movie. I enjoyed Hard Eight far more than I expected. Okay, its not nearly as good as There Will Be Blood or The Master, but its still a remarkably competent directorial debut from P.T Anderson. I also cant praise Philip Baker Hall enough, he should have gotten an Oscar for this movie. He carries the whole thing with understated presence. An underrated performance for sure.

Hyponotazing first half, ok-ish slightly boring at times second half. How the hell did PTA manage to reunite so many would-be stars in his first film?

 

Didn't get the point of Seymour Hoffman character.
