Look at that. Captain America 3 on top.

I've decided to add Deadpool and The Mermaid's OW grosses to the chart for the sake of convenience and access to data. I was really torn initially about how to handle it but seeing Captain America 3's numbers come in, I've rationalized that if we exclude those opening weekends because of extra days and holidays then any films with more than 4 days, holidays or both would be left off the chart and that would affect about 50%, possible more, of the above chart. Plus with no access to data, it would make it almost impossible to separate the traditional 4 day weekend from any other additional days or extraneous reasons.

Just a reminder (did mentioned a few pages ago):

Girls and Panzer der Film has a 4DX screen along with two normal screen (a very rare case as a non-3D film and having very low screen count), so don't be surprised if this produced a non usual total Today.

(The evening showing of 4DX has been full few weeks ago, the earlier one almost too as of this writing)

That is not true. There are many arthouse films that get only 1-3 theaters (Cinematheque and/or IFC and/or The GRAND). This theater arrangement is not new to Japanese anime films either. Doukyusei only got a release in 1 theater last month and played fairly strong as well. There are quite a number of Japanese anime films that have gotten less than 5 theaters in the past few years so it is nothing new.

Good hold for Captain America 3. Neighbors 2 had a slightly bigger opening day than Dirty Grandpa. It should make about $450,000 this weekend. Opening day reviews have it at a 3.7. Not bad for Finding Mr. Right 2. Nice hold for I Am A Hero. All holdovers should see a slightly bigger drop on Friday with Money Monster opening.

The main point is that is unusual move for utilizing 4DX for a film having low screen count AND non-3D.

It's not unusual. It has never happened before. This could be a new trend because the old 4D screen at the Airport would only show the big movies. Essentially it acted like an IMAX. This is a new 4DX screen built into a regular theater but there has never been a 4DX screen that has shown a movie with a limited theater count.

Those are solid holds for all films. Captain America 3 saw a slightly bigger drop with the switch from 3D to 2D this week. Neighbors 2 performed at expectations. The holiday on Saturday will push it in the half a million range. Very good for Finding Mr. Right 2 and I Am A Hero. Meh for The Inerasable but excellent for Girls und Panzer. Mediocre opening day for The Lobster.

Captain America 3 is only less than $150,000 from the top 5 and it will pass both Transformers 4 and The Avengers by Friday. It should pass Iron Man 3 by Monday or Tuesday and Titanic will go down next weekend. Meanwhile, Zootopia sits just outside the top 40. I'm not sure if it can surpass CJ7 to crack the top 40 but it has done very well to make it to even the top 50.

Every holdover saw much better week-to-week holds on the holiday Saturday than Friday. Captain America 3 doubled its Friday admissions and will hold around the 40-45% mark this weekend despite the switch from 3D prices to 2D. It will accumulate over 13.5m by Sunday.

Very good increase for Money Monster. Although its rating has come down from the early high of 5.0, the early reviews have helped to bring in moviegoers. Not bad increases for Neighbors 2 and Finding Mr. Right 2. Solid increase for I Am A Hero. Zootopia gains from last Saturday. Incredible.

Big but expected drops for most films after the holiday. Zootopia increased from its holiday Saturday pre-sales. Wow.
__________________________________________________
X-Men: Apocalypse enters HK which is coming off a new opening weekend record set by a superhero film. X-Men doesn't have the flair or drawing power to reel in a substantial amount of the general public but X-Men has been growing organically since the first film in 2000. The last X-Men film, Days of Future Past, more than doubled First Class's OW thanks to the 3D surcharges and drummed up 2.7m OW. Apocalypse will be the first X-Men film to gross more than 3m thanks to high ticket prices. Ticket prices for the latest X-Men film will come in $20 HK higher than The Avengers 2 in IMAX and regular theaters will up their regular 3D prices by $15 HK. It doesn't match the super sky high prices set by The Hobbit or Captain America 3 but its prices are still higher than past X-Men films.

Pre-sales look decent almost everywhere. It should be able to surpass Star Wars 7's OW despite a $20-$60 disadvantage in IMAX.

OW: $3,500,000
Total: $7,600,000
__________________________________________________
The Jungle Book is looking pretty scarce in IMAX. It released pre-selling for IMAX a couple of days ago but most peak shows are empty. Early OW prediction: $1,200,000.

I still believe it was a mistake to release this so late. I believe the major players for mid-May to June will be X-Men: Apocalypse, Now You See Me 2 and Independence Day 2.

Yeah, most of the time, mediocre superhero/action/special effects movies get higher ratings on HKMovie6.

Apocalypse comes in 29% below Days of Future Past's admissions but it will make up some ground in gross with high IMAX and regular ticket prices.

X-Men: Apocalypse OD estimate - $458,485

Weak hold for Captain America 3. Nice for Money Monster. The Lobster is holding well down at #7.

X-Men goes up from initial estimates. Captain America 3 took a huge nosedive with the loss of IMAX. That's a respectable number for Money Monster. Poor from Neighbors 2. Not a bad hold for Finding Mr. Right 2. Weak start for Assassination Classroom 2. Great hold from The Lobster.

Strong rebound for X-Men after that muted Friday increase. Every holdover saw much higher drops on Saturday than Friday with the loss of the holiday this weekend. It'll be interesting to see how much they will all come back on Sunday.

Very good increase for X-Men. It really needed that type of increase after the very minor Friday increase. Its score still stands at a very good 4.5 on Saturday. It seems general audiences are enjoying the movie for the most part. Another pretty bad hold for Captain America 3. Very good hold for Money Monster. Not so great for Neighbors 2. OK hold for Finding Mr. Right 2. The Lobster had an amazing hold.

5 Finding Mr. Right 2: Book of Love $95,000 -56.8% $1,090,000
Despite not coming close to X-Men: Days of Future Past's admissions, Apocalypse will come in just below DOFP's OW in gross. It's a very good start coming after 3 very gigantic superhero OWs in a span of 2 months. Captain America 3 was flattened with X-Men generating ticket sales this weekend. Its chances of passing Avengers 2 now is 0%. It should be able to still pass Titanic for #3 and hit 15m. Very good hold for Money Monster even though it is coming off a 3 day weekend but last weekend is balanced with a holiday nudged in there. Terrible hold for Neighbors 2. Finding Mr. Right 2 passed the 1m mark this weekend and is inching closer to Finding Mr. Right's gross. It is a tough ask because it is about $250,000 away from the original's gross but it can do it with 2 weeks of great holds.

A very tough Sunday for most films. X-Men faded a bit on Sunday and dropped 4,500 admissions from Saturday while Captain America 3 was surprisingly the only holdover to improve from Saturday's hold on Sunday.

5 Finding Mr. Right 2: Book of Love $95,000 -56.8% $1,090,000

Due to the lackluster Sunday, the middle 3 were adjusted down. X-Men: Apocalypse had a very good start considering the conditions such as coming off a record breaking OW set by Captain America 3 just 3 weeks ago, 3 massive superhero OWs preceding it and the diminishing buzz that this movie has seen. 6m is a lock. Opening weekend score stands at a very good 4.4/5. Captain America 3 unsurprisingly imploded with X-Men releasing. It needed a great hold for a chance at #2 but that is out of the question now. It has about an 80% chance to make 15m. Money Monster had a fantastic hold. This should be able to get to 1m total. Awful hold for Neighbors 2. Finding Mr. Right 2 had an average hold. Beating the first one's gross will be tough but not impossible. It really needs to hold great next week for a shot to pass the original.

Very underwhelming start for The Jungle Book but it has some time to turn it around. It has looked weaker than X-Men in IMAX even though it has a 2:1 - 5:1 advantage over Apocalypse in showtimes. X-Men: Apocalypse had an iffy drop but its inflated with the loss of most of its IMAX showtimes to The Jungle Book. It might retain #1 if The Jungle Book fails to increase like a well received family friendly movie like this should this weekend.

The Jungle Book is #1 in admissions but because of the IMAX sessions inflating The Jungle Book's number and X-Men: Apocalypse having higher ticket prices, X-Men is likely #1 in gross. Jungle Book's start is kind of meh. Opening day score is a 4.2. Mediocre for X-Men even with the loss of IMAX.

The loss of most of its IMAX showtimes for X-Men hurt it as that was its big moneymaker but it will pass 4m on Friday. The Jungle Book had an OK start but the real concern will come in the upcoming weeks. Its legs will be cut short within the next 2 weeks: Angry Birds, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Now You See Me 2, Warcraft and The Conjuring 2 all release within that period and there are other movies that are scheduled for release as well. Then Disney's Alice is out on the following weekend. It really needs a fantastic hold next weekend in order to have any chance of being saved on the June 9 holiday weekend. Captain America 3 had an mediocre hold. It's about $3.5m HK ($450,000 US) away from overtaking Titanic for #3. Its hopes of besting Titanic are fading and it really needs to start holding better for any chance of grabbing #3 all time along with 15m. Another solid hold for Money Monster. It will pass 1m. The Wave actually did pretty good. Foreign language films are a tough sell so legs will be what's most important here rather than opening weekend. Bad for The Faith of Anna Waters but horror movies rarely do well in Hong Kong.

@Bluebomb
How big/small do you think TMNT 2 will be? The first Instalment didn't do well in HK, grossing 1 Million USD, but it was up against Guardians of the Galaxy and Lucy, which both had better distributors. TMNT 2 will be in a more packed market place, but arguably better release date due to summer.. Do you think it can gross more than its predecessor?

It should do around 1.2-1.5m. Higher opening weekend but similar to slightly worse legs. Now You See Me 2 will release just 6 days after and TMNT 2 will go up against that, The Conjuring 2 and Warcraft, all of which are expected to take away TMNT 2's adult audience.
