The Jungle Book opened up this afternoon and it led to an undisputed admissions victory on Saturday. Meanwhile, X-Men had a pretty good increase on Saturday and it still led all films in gross. Tough drops for most of the rest of the holdovers.

5 The Wave $90,000   $90,000
The Jungle Book will win all 4 days in admissions but in gross, X-Men wins due to its big ticket prices. X-Men had an identical hold like Days of Future Past but competition on its 3rd weekend should be slightly weaker than Days of Future Past faced on its 3rd weekend. Captain America 3 had another really bad hold. Its chance to make 15m looks to be over. Beating Titanic is in jeopardy too. Money Monster suffered a big blow to pass 1m. It can still make it but it will need a good hold next weekend. The Wave opened to a solid number. For a non-Asian foreign language film, it will post a $7,500 PTA with that figure.

There are lots of movies releasing in the next 2 weeks because of the holiday on June 9 and to get away from the summer blockbusters. Warcraft will be battling Now You See Me 2 but NYSM2 will have the upper hand in screen count. I expect NYSM2 to get at least 2 screens while Warcraft gets 1. Interesting to note that out of all the upcoming releases, Now You See Me 2 has the highest amount of likes of any film. Awareness is very high and I don't expect anything less than 2m OW.

Alice 2 is out the following weekend but Disney seems to care more about The Jungle Book than Alice here which I believe is a mistake. Johnny Depp still has loads of starpower and this could have made over 4m total had they released it this weekend but now it looks headed for only 2-2.5m total. Independence Day 2 will be another big grosser but it might not perform in the same vein as Jurassic World. June 30 looks very weak with the start of animation summer season beginning with Secret Life of Pets. Legend of Tarzan does not look very appealing and it could lose to Pets as the highest opener of that week. Three probably won't do very well either with Cold War 2 opening the next weekend.

In July, Ice Age 5 moved to the end of the month leaving Cold War 2 all alone. It really works out well for most of the films involved. Cold War 2 now has the whole week to itself while Ice Age 5 gets away from Finding Dory and Finding Dory can now trap the families into seeing it now that it is the first big animation movie of the summer to come out. Cold War 2 should release on the regular Thursday instead of Friday. It would get an extra day of earnings with no competition. Moving Central Intelligence to July 14 was a dumb move by EDKO. Now it will face the wrath of Finding Dory and it has direct competition with Star Trek and Jason Bourne the 2 weekends after. Many African American led movies never get a release theatrically in HK (Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along 1 & 2, Pain and Gain) and when they do, they usually flop either in total gross or in comparison with other Asian territories (Race, The Equalizer, Lee Daniels' The Butler). I think they should move this to August 11 where things will be much calmer. There won't be direct competition in its run from a big action movie. Finding Dory should do gangbusters. On a recent Facebook post about Finding Dory, it got 5x the views of Alice and 7x the views of The Jungle Book. Awareness and likeability are very high. Ghostbusters won't do much. Asians tend to go toward male-oriented action movies and there are literally 3 of them before, during and after Ghostbusters' opening weekend. Star Trek: Beyond should open fairly well but I see it losing to Finding Dory for a 2nd weekend. Ice Age 5 will go up against Jason Bourne but IA5 should come out on top.

Suicide Squad leads the August films and then it goes pretty much downhill from there. Disney moved BFG to August 11 to get away from Ice Age 5 after FOX moved it out of its former July 7 slot. I don't see it doing very well right now. Making the giant ugly doesn't go down well with audiences but there is the big-small effect and that might play a big role in its opening weekend and summer legs.

X-Men: Apocalypse increases from estimates. That number means that Apocalypse nudged up 1% from Days of Future Past's OW and Hong Kong was the only overseas territory that grossed more than 2m OW with Days of Future Past to increase with Apocalypse on opening weekend. That number is fantastic when you factor in that 3 superhero films broke records on their respective opening weekends this year and to see it go up despite the superhero fatigue is really good. This shows that the X-Men franchise is strong and alive in Hong Kong.

Awful hold for Captain America 3 but it is up to #4 all time. #3 will be a fight to the finish. Money Monster had an OK 2nd week. It did ease 2% and had 7 days this week versus 3 from last week but last week also had a holiday which accelerates the initial demand. Terrible for Neighbors 2. Finding Mr. Right 2 had an iffy hold. It looks like it will end up making less than the original. Very good for The Lobster. Down the list, Zootopia cracks the top 40 all time.

Would you say that Zootopia has had an unusually long run in Hong Kong?

Nope. It's had a slightly above average run but it's only in its 10th week heading into its 11th. Once films enter its 15th week then it becomes an unusually long run. Zootopia hasn't quite made it yet.

Still good for Jungle Book. Nice increase for Angry Birds but it may be too little too late. Ok hold for X-Men. Bad for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. The Conjuring 2 starts off its box office run with a #6 debut in sneak previews. That is a pretty decent sneaks number for a horror movie here. It's all about gaining momentum ahead of its release. It's doing a pretty good job so far with high praise from early reviews but Now You See Me 2 and Warcraft will wage war at the box office next week and there will be no stopping them.

5 Criminal $55,000   $55,000

Just an update on last weekend's numbers, it seems that X-Men: Apocalypse took out the weekend by a little more than $10,000 over The Jungle Book. This week, it was not that close. There was nothing that stood out in terms of holds or opening weekend. For The Jungle Book, it needed to hold better than that because there will be massive cuts next week. A 40% drop is borderline and theaters will have more discretion now to cut showtimes. X-Men: Apocalypse is running ahead of Days of Future Past currently but it might end up missing DOFP's total with the new openers expected to hoard a big stake with showtimes and screen counts. 6m will be passed on Thursday or Friday. The 2 major openers both fell flat. If these numbers pan out, HK will have the worst Asian opening weekend for Angry Birds by a big margin. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will open less than its already low predecessor. Out of the two openers, both opening weekend figures are equally terrible. Criminal rounds out the top 5 but not without some competition from Captain America 3 and The Taste of Youth.

Average hold for X-Men: Apocalypse. Decent opening weekend for The Jungle Book though it is slightly behind most OWs in Asian territories. Captain America 3 is drying up fast. It's not going to pass 15m or Titanic for #3 now. OK hold but good total for Money Monster. Terrible hold for Neighbors 2.

Will magic lift the thriller over the epic fantasy action film?

Image vs. Image
It is a strange sight to see a magician film and a live-action movie to a very successful mmorpg series as the headliners of a huge battle but both of them combined will aim for more than 3m and if things really take off for Warcraft, we could see both push for 4m combined.

Now You See Me 2 is the follow-up to one of 2013's surprise summer hits. Scheduled one week before World War Z, Now You See Me nearly captured a 3 multiplier before the heart of summer took off with 3 2m+ OW films releasing within a 4 week period after Now You See Me's opening weekend. It enjoyed very good reviews in HK despite the ambivalence from critics. Now the sequel hopes to land a solid punch before the core of the summer period is upon us.

Now You See Me 2 is opening in a cushy weekend. It is everything on its side, sequel-itis, holiday and goodwill from the first film. It also does not have to deal with a strong opener on its 2nd weekend than the original did as Alice Through the Looking Glass is not expected to garner a hefty gross. Pre-sales are looking very good and it is outselling all films at every location. At one theater, it is far ahead of Warcraft by a 3:1 ratio on the Thursday holiday. The Dragon Boat holiday falling on Thursday means that Thursday will be the highest grossing day of the weekend for the majority of films. Due to this development, Now You See Me 2 was moved up one day to get a head start on the holiday. It is a good tactic as the night showings before a holiday are pretty strong and it means an additional weekday added into its opening weekend which means it has a higher chance of debuting at #1 but there is one film that stands in its way.

Warcraft, the live action film based off the successful MMORPG series is finally being released, 10 years after being first announced. Stuck in development hell with company misgivings and directing changes, it comes in with a substantial $160m price tag. Universal and Legendary are banking on its figure from one overseas territory will swing the press back in its favor. China is going to be its biggest market and opening weekend is expected to be one of the highest on end. In Hong Kong, interest is much more muted. Reviews don't seem too kind at the moment but action adventure reviews generally do not have much pull with audiences. Pre-sales have it behind Now You See Me 2 at the moment at regular theaters but it is doing well in IMAX.

The disappearing action or the spectacle of the big
Much has been talked about with 3D the past 7 years since Avatar. 3D prices have generally attracted more people overall in that span but in the past couple of years, the power of 3D has faded. Before the last couple of years, tentpole releases would see 3D released for its first 3-4 weeks with less than 5% of 2D showtimes. The script has changed and now tentpoles such as Captain America 3 this year have seen 3D switched to 2D right after its 2nd weekend. Excluding IMAX which are always 3D when available, 2D has a 2:1 advantage in Warcraft screenings over 3D.

Although Warcraft has 3D prices, Now You See Me 2 has something to crow about as well. At the 2 biggest theater chains, both have raised their prices for Now You See Me 2 even though NYSM2 does not have an extra long running time surcharge. At Broadway, Now You See Me 2 will see prices upped by $5 while UA, NYSM2's home base, increased ticket prices by $10. Warcraft did not see any price increases at any major theater chain.

China effect...will Warcraft exceed expectations?
China is the primary country that will try and push Warcraft into the black for Universal but will that extend into Hong Kong? China has a 3 day holiday starting on Thursday and if they decide to come in for a couple of days, Warcraft could make a big push with its 3D prices. It remains to be seen though as to what will happen this week as it is still very early.

Screen counts aren't just for decorations
At Broadway, Now You See Me 2 and Warcraft only get one screen with Now You See Me 2 getting the big screen or sharing the big screen with Angry Birds. At UA, Now You See Me 2 is lined up with 2 screens while MCL has opted for Warcraft. Golden Harvest is dropping NYSM2 with 2 screens and the biggest screen.

The lowdown
Now You See Me 2 has major advantages over Warcraft in winning the weekend by being a sequel, having higher 2D ticket prices at the 2 biggest theater chains, opening 1 day earlier and goodwill from the first film. The last couple of weeks have been a little underwhelming as well so chances are better that it can break out. Warcraft is harder to predict because if tourists from China end up storming theaters, they will enter HK on Wednesday night at the earliest. Right now, Now You See Me 2 is doing better than Warcraft at every theater and with the extra day, its chances of breaking 2m just got better. With strong factors working in its favor, Now You See Me 2 will steal 2.1m this weekend. Warcraft has IMAX and 3D prices on its side but whether it will curry favor with Chinese tourists is a bit of an unknown at this point. I'm going to say there will be a slight China effect but not enough to turn the tide. A 1.4m OW would be a better than expected start for Warcraft.

Legs...will they or won't they?
Now You See Me 2 should build strongly on the first film and 4m looks good. It can get to 5m but it will need to limit the damage that Independence Day 2 is certain to strike on its 3rd weekend. If it can get by relatively unscathed then it can have a good weekend as its 4th weekend openers looks a bit weak. 5th weekend sees Cold War 2 out and by this time it will be winding down. 6th weekend looks massive with Finding Dory, Central Intelligence and Three all fighting for screens.

Warcraft will heavily rely on its opening weekend to hold its total gross up as legs most likely will not happen for this movie. On its 2nd weekend, Alice Through the Looking Glass opens and while that won't be expected to do much, it already hits 1 quadrant of Warcraft's audience. The next week, Independence Day 2 is seeking to clear out the remaining quadrants but if that does not do it, The Secret Life of Tarzan will with its action adventure genres.

Now You See Me 2
Opening weekend - $2,100,000
Total - $5,100,000 (2.42 multiplier)

Warcraft
Opening weekend - $1,400,000
Total - $3,000,000 (2.14 multiplier)

Wednesday admissions

1. Now You See Me 2 - 22,515
6. The Conjuring 2 - 1,901

Now You See Me 2 is off to a fantastic start. Now You See Me had 3 days of sneaks (Saturday, Sunday and holiday Wednesday) before officially opening and this number beats any one of its sneak previews numbers and its opening day number on their own. Now You See Me 2 currently has a 4.0/5 from users. Let's see if that number changes throughout the week. The Conjuring 2 also continued with its special screenings on Wednesday.

Huge battle today with Now You See Me 2 performing better than Warcraft at most locations. IMAX and D-BOX are inflating Warcraft's admissions where it is performing very well so far. The real kicker is that Warcraft is doing excellent business at 10 PM in regular theaters. In some cases, it is has over a 10:1 advantage over Now You See Me 2 with 10 PM showtimes alone. Since Friday is not a holiday, we can only put this down to Chinese tourists coming in to watch Warcraft at night. Now You See Me 2 has a huge advantage with afternoon showtimes. Angry Birds has notched some sellouts today. It has really come into its own last few days.

3 PM Update: Now You See Me 2 tried to pull away but Warcraft is not budging and has closed the gap slightly. Now You See Me 2 still leads by just over 1,300 admissions. Early reviews for Warcraft have been excellent with a 4.6/5 so far from moviegoers while Now You See Me 2 continues its descent, now sitting at a 3.8/5.

Independence Day: Resurgence is open for business in IMAX. Today's pre-sales have looked extremely good.

The Festival Walk theater has re-opened as part of the MCL chain. There are only minimal changes to the 7 houses from before but one noticeable change is they added a director's club/Starsuite house like the ones Cityplaza and The GRAND have. Pricing seems to be line with the charges from before when it was an AMC theater.

Very close battle today. Now You See Me 2 led throughout the day though Warcraft came close with a less than 500 admissions gap at one point. Excellent increase from last week for Angry Birds. Last week it had a very low opening but it has picked up the pace this week. It will easily increase from last week's gross. The Jungle Book had a decent week to week increase. Not a bad opening for The Conjuring 2. Poor for X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

Decent decrease from yesterday's pre-sales for Warcraft but Now You See Me 2 should play stronger than Warcraft this weekend. Good for Angry Birds. Not bad for The Conjuring 2. Horrible drop for The Jungle Book.

The top 5 last weekend saw minimal adjustments to their total grosses with the exception of X-Men: Apocalypse which gained $40,000. Decent hold for The Jungle Book. Mediocre for X-Men: Apocalypse. Very weak opening for Angry Birds. HK's Angry Birds gross is the weakest out of any Asian territory including Thailand and Vietnam. If that wasn't bad enough, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 scored one of the worst opening weekends for a sequel. Captain America 3 is still trying to get past Titanic for #3 but it will fall short.

Now You See Me 2 won the Thursday holiday despite Warcraft having 3D prices and IMAX. I guess the $10 surcharge at UA and $5 uptick at Broadway clinched it for the caper flick. At first glance, the only feeling that I got when I saw the top 2's grosses were ambivalence. Now You See Me 2 winning Thursday can be seen as only a mild victory. It was expected by some to have a sizable lead on Thursday so to win by only $25,000 feels like virtually nothing. On the other hand, Warcraft losing despite the built in fanbase + China + fantasy action adventure is disappointing. Reviews may play a role this weekend with Warcraft leading the charge with a 4.6 while Now You See Me 2 tows behind with a 3.7 but there has been no evidence to support Warcraft gaining admissions over Now You See Me 2. It looks like Now You See Me 2 has increased its lead over Warcraft this weekend while Warcraft has faded.

Angry Birds butted heads with its soft opening last weekend and resurgence this week. Though animated movies with holidays on their 2nd weekend are known for strong 2nd weekend grosses, Angry Birds has morphed into a bomb or mother bird this week. It will easily pass 1.2m by Sunday. The Jungle Book had a nice increase but it will only be temporary. Last weekend's hold foreshadowed what will happen in the upcoming weeks. It won't be having great holds and will leave theaters in about 3-4 weeks. The Conjuring 2 had a great start. It has already made half of The Conjuring's opening weekend total with 3 days still to accumulate money. The Conjuring 2 has had great reviews and it should relatively well the next few weeks. X-Men: Apocalypse passed 6m and is looking to surpass Days of Future Past's total (6.54m). It may end up falling short with no holidays left and Independence Day 2 on the horizon. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 knocked off $500,000 from its list but its total is a massive failure. Brother Bajranji has been doing extremely well the last couple of weeks and should continue its run well into July.
