  1. I think her dying would have been an okay ending, but this film wouldn't make a third of what it does now. Plus, we would miss out on the visual metaphor presented by the final scene.
  2. So, I have been thinking lately, a lot of times, it is easy to guess what will win BP or what the big two or three films will be. We here about the film festivals and whatnot and critic reception. Then, there are the Guilds, and the Academy tried to get away with them last year, announcing nominees before the Guilds had a chance to announce their nominees. But, that backfired, and the Academy lacked the balls and went with the Guilds choices and picked Argo for BP. But, even with the Guilds influence, I get the opinion that there are other influences much earlier. My question is what are these influences and what causes the Academy members to follow these influences like sheep. Who really decides what movies win and what movies are not worthy?
  3. One of the best films ever made. Sadly, I doubt we will ever see another film like this executed so well. It borrows from so much like a modern-day Star Wars, and then it takes some concepts that might be complex for some people and presents it in a way that is entertaining for people. This was actually the perfect film to end the previous millennium and usher in the new one.
  4. I think Gravity will manage the most noms. Though 12 YAS stands a chance as well.
  5. Yah, Gravity has this in the bag along with sound editing and VFX. Maybe editing as well. BP and BD are question marks. Could also win score.
  6. I find it funny that Clooney actually gets little face time in this movie. We rarely see his face and when we do, he still has that helmet on, thus sometimes blurring some of his facial features. And, of course, he dies halfway through the movie. Okay, there is the dream/hallucination scene, but otherwise, very little of Clooney is actually seen in this film.
  7. So, when we need to fake a Mars landing, the government knows who to hire to film it for them. lol
  8. Actually Clooney's character was probably the one thing I didn't like about the film, but not enough to make me lower my A+ grade. I still consider this a perfected film.
  9. Wasn't the last time a film won BP without a BD nom like 1981 until Argo came along?
  10. So, if come Awards season, 12YAS remains frontrunner for BP, who thinks Gravity stands a chance at BD? I would not be surprised if we got another BP/BD split this year.
  11. His other films don't come close. Gravity is in a whole different league of filmmaking.
  12. Saw this a second time with a group. Two of the others loved it. One person hated it. He said he found Insidious 2 a million times better and he would never watch Gravity again. As for me, I still see this a true masterpiece in filmmaking. A strong A+ from me.
  13. I think $200M is assured. The real question mark is $250M and upwards.
  14. I mean, I know Oscar bait tends to come out in October. I just would have thought that a film like Gravity would be more suited for a December release.
  15. Actually, Avatar had a ton of buzz before its release. Everyone in the industry was dying to see it. It might not have had the best reviews ever but it was the talk of town. Heck, it had over 1000 pages before its release, if I remember correctly. You don't open a film to $77m in December and be an original film unless you have some hype going on.
  16. Kind of interesting how we have never had a $200M film in October before/
  17. I would have never guessed that one of the best films ever made would come out this year, nonetheless in October of all months.
  18. This film has brought me back to these forums. I was gone for so long.
  19. I am sick of the Academy awarding either politically motivated films or historical dramas. Sadly, 12YAS is both. I say it is politically motivated because we have a black President right now.
  20. WOM is kicking in. Maybe it will have a smaller Sunday drop than normal as well.
  21. For what it's worth, I heard CF has about an hour of footage shot in IMAX which means those scenes shot in IMAX will actually take up the entire screen.
  22. I bet third week, Gravity gets IMAX back. I bet Cap Philips got IMAX because IMAX didn't believe in Gravity at the time.
  23. For me, Gravity is much more than just a popcorn flick.
