I can't believe people are trying to say discount Tuesday made no difference. Almost every theater in Canada had discount Tuesday. That's a huge chunk and it seems quite a lot of theaters in the US had discount Tuesday as well. Remember they are 50% off. That's a huge difference.
Well if the tweet is accurate then I can imagine a large backlash to casting Zendaya. Honestly as much as I think it's an interesting casting choice I'm surprised because Ariel specially has a pretty iconic look that they've commercialized so much. I liked her in the Greatest Showman though. Harry Styles is.... a choice. Like I know he was in Dunkirk and can sing but...I mean I guess he also has a huge fanbase? I'm not really confident in Gerard Butler singing ability after Phantom of the Opera but I don't think Triton sings much anyway. Is Ariel's mom even in the Little Mermaid?
John Legend is actually a pretty good choice for Sebastian. He'll kick Under the Sea out of the park.
Now watch it be completely fake lol.
but she could have ignored it, which is what she usually does when casting speculations come out. (When she was first announced to be cast in Spider-man I remember she didn't acknowledge it until filming started) but she specifically replied to a tweet denying it which is why I just assumed it was fake lol. but considering Jacob and Awkwafina have been confirmed it's looking likely..
So is this tweet accurate? It was made before the Tremblay and Awkwafina announcements were made
It's weird because Zendaya recently denied it on twitter
Honestly It's going to be hard to judge how good the Tuesday number is because it's rare to have a movie open on Tuesday. Also due to the 50% discount as well. Cineplex and Landmark the two biggest theaters chains in Canada both have the 50% discount.
Honestly I wonder if this is at a disadvantage coming after In the Heights. I love WSS but if In the Heights is a big hit some people could see WSS a pointless. They aren't really similar but they are both musical that take place in New York with some Hispanic/immigrant themes.
However we have no reason to think In the Heights will be a big hit as of now. It's not a very well known musical and the cast are all unknowns so it will all depend on marketing.
idk if Disney cared much but I know I know in modern criticisms of the cartoon, Jafar is often referred to as a racist caricature. I kinda think this is why they changed up his depiction in this version. I don't know if it was for the best.
Agree with every thing you said here 100% . Also Robin Williams might have played a factor as well.
I don't like bashing critics but I honestly think there was some internal bias just because they are kind of tired of live action remakes and the also the weird backlash this movie had online.
