And these days it does not make sense for theater companies to pay for it as well. Regal is having major bankruptcy problems. I'm sure other theaters aren't in the best shape either. They all got nailed by COVID, plus the general trend of so many people in the audience that prefer to stay home instead of going to theaters. We have to take what we can get from theater companies these days. If they install a new 4K projector & screen, it's something to be thrilled about. But it's hard to blame them for continuing to use the older 2K projectors & screens. They gotta watch out for their financial situation first and foremost.

The 70mm issue falls on Nolan for making a 3 hour movie. For many years, IMAX said the hard limit on film projection for the IMAX format was around 2 hours and 45 minutes. This 3 hour runtime has pushed IMAX beyond the physical limitations of the format, which makes sense. The equipment is gigantic and was originally designed for nature documentaries that were less than 1 hour long. I agree 1,000% with you on the LieMAX digital projection. They should be using 4K Laser for every IMAX digital auditorium, not the outdated 2K projectors from 2010. Some of this falls on the theater companies, who don't want to pay to upgrade these auditoriums to IMAX's new Laser projectors. IMAX probably does not have enough profit or budget to afford footing the bill on these upgrades for the likes of Regal.

Just got back from my 3rd viewing. Definitely a Top 3-4 movie in Nolan’s group of 12 career movies. The entire cast of actors is so damn good! Also seems like Nolan’s dialogue is pretty good on this one. Noticed people in the audience laughing at some of the sarcasm from Matt Damon and Alden Ehrenreich.

Santikos should not have given control of it to Regal. Meanwhile I am at the new Regal Bender’s Landing on 99 in Spring right now. Very nice place, but it’s always empty. They opened it in 2021, horrible timing with the Pandemic. It’s obvious they spent a ton of money building this place, but I don’t see how it’s going to stay open long term.

There are not anywhere near enough PLF screens, that's for damn sure. Sadly, a theater near me that has 6 PLF's got shutdown recently because of Regal's bankruptcy problems. It's a very nice place that also has a bowling alley, full restaurant/bar, etc. There are some rumors that another company such as Cinemark will take over and re-open it at some point. But for now, it sucks to see a great place get shutdown.

Tarantino movies are Hard R ratings. Very limited audience because of that. It’s pretty impressive that he was able to make profitable movies such as Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and Unce Upon A Time in Hollywood.

Very similar to TDK’s spillover, but Barbie had even stronger weekdays than TDK and Barbie will probably have a much stronger second weekend than TDK as well. More frontloading in superhero genre.
-
I saw a random post on Reddit where the person claimed they already saw Barbie 17 times. That’s pretty wild, haha

Similar deal with Oppie. Nolan has 4 movies from this release date in the past. TDK had the worst jumps of the group, with a 2nd weekend that was 4.57x above Thursday. Best one was Dunkirk at 5.1x above Thursday. So how the hell does a $10M Thursday turn into a $35M weekend? Awful projections from Deadline on both movies.
-
Dunkirk budget was $100M at most. His wife said it was $80M, but I wonder if she wasn’t including Nolan’s $20M base salary on the project.

Those projections from Deadline are the worst I’ve ever seen. I know they aren’t good at the job, but I don’t remember them being that bad in the past. If you’re gonna lowball, at least be reasonable with it. Something like 82 for Barbie and 41 for Oppie. They will probably make more than that, but at least those are not as bad as 70 and 35.

It wouldn't mind if they fudge it a bit, assuming the actual performance is very close to $10M for the day. Shave $100,000 or $200,000 from upcoming Friday/Saturday numbers. Studios do this all the time. Paramount did it with Transformers 2 when it made $198M in 5 days and they magically found $2M in Puerto Rico to push it over $200M. Most recently Paramount did it with MI7 last Wednesday, to keep it from falling behind Sound of Freedom on the daily charts.

I haven't seen Dune, so not sure on that one. But I was very surprised at the end of Mission Impossible when they plastered the big bold title on there "END OF PART 1" right in the audience's face...before the screen went to black for the end credits.
