Never posted, but kinda shocked by Civil War's high male demo...

    https://deadline.com/2024/04/box-office-civil-war-1235882968/

"Mostly male skewing here for Civil War at 73% with 57% of the audience being the prime 18-34moviegiong demo. Largest demo was 25-34 at 36%. Diversity range was 50% Caucasian, a very strong 24% Latino and Hispanic, 12% Black, 8% Asian and 6% other. Best regions for Civil War are South (A24 did have great test scores in Dallas), South Central and the West."

Why does it surprise you? War films in general trend that way so it's within normal(ish) norms?

Edit - norms as in smaller grosses. A giant hit is obviously going to have wider demographics, but this is pulling from upper classes and in the grand scheme will be "small" overall so not pulling from the groups that go toward more "fun" films doesn't surprise.

I would also hazard to guess that the politics of the demos also pull quite liberal and white.

  2. I mean, poor(ish) openings aside, this was a fairly solid weekend for the products in the marketplace. The week ass Friday increases set the story though overall... still not sure why they were less than 100%, especially for the family leaning flicks. UNLESS there were more schools out this past week then we realized (which could definitely be a factor.) Monday drops should be back to the nasty normals of 75-80% outside of the major adult films.

Please stop with the "middle class dad" anecdotes. They're essentially the equivalent of political stuff in the Civil War thread and make it even harder to determine what is factually occurring.

Considering that reality proves your point wrong this is an asinine take LOL.

But then again, I remember being the young Box Office Fanatic and not understanding why the older crowd (even older than @baumer lol) used to gripe some on the BOM boards. Over 20 years of following the topic shows the same trends and ebb and flow. YES the younger crowd / date crowd has been the larger pocket for decades - but where does the money for that demo come from? If the "middle class dads" don't have the funds or time, its a near guarantee that the younger gens also don't have as much relatively speaking.

Then, look at the actual data from media companies about usage and streaming and we realize the younger demo is also hit by the lack of appreciation for the long-film format and it creates a wider divide that the older crowd cannot overcome.

Funny, I am not usually so negative when I am on this board, but my pov as an accountant means I am looking at the info from pure data points and reality instead of wishful thinking.

My wife and I talk about when we saw xyz movie - Facebook memory just this week was from Captain America 2's OW in 2024 - back when we had more money and time and went nearly every weekend because we love the experience. The last OW we went to? Black Panther in 2022. There are some realities that may not be apparent to those in a bubble - but factually exist and are a major part of whats going on.

I will enjoy finally getting around to MI7 this week, as I also see that Poor Things is on Hulu. It's not for lack of desire but lack of time and financial ability. If you have kids, and are invested in them, you will understand this some day.

My instincts agree, but honestly most of the people I know who scoff at me going to the movie theaters are professional types with wife and kids that I work or volunteer with. The middle class, 30-60 year old professional crowd lives on Amazon and Netflix tbh. All my work colleagues are wait for streaming on everything, but my high school age niece and her little friends still like going to the movies for something to do. They're much more casual moviegoers than grownups now honestly.

Married with kiddos. As much as I LOVE the theatrical experience, I have much greater things to worry about and frankly to pay for. Our $10/month Disney/hulu combo provides more than enough entertainment for the kids and our 2 or 3 times a year theater trips are the special events that we enjoy - and it's rarely going to be something that isn't NTC related because we at least know what we are getting. 6 tickets a pop isn't practical and dinner+babysitting for date nights mean theater is the least likely option. I can totally understand and relate to your crowd 🤷‍♂️

  5. The shock of Panda 2 still stings - pretty sure in Baumer's Summer Game I had it in the over 300m camp (expected it to be similar to Shrek on a smaller scale.)

But the one thing that most tend to forget about HTTYD versus the sequel is that ticket sales wise it held / maybe even slightly increased. Most tend to forget (especially if Box Office wasn't your thing) that HTTYD was part of the post Avatar 3D trifecta of Alice-Clash-HTTYD where 3D played a big part in the ATP. HTTYD2 didn't have nearly the same % since 3D usage nosedived in the 4.25 years between releases and frankly, they waited a year too long as well.

I am glad to see Panda 4 doing so well though :) was afraid that it would continue the trend from 2 and 3.

Loving the Dune run, hopefully when I finally get a chance to see it I enjoy it more than the first.

I'm not totally sure how a $6.7M Friday will reach a $22M 3-day. It would need to increase a lot on Saturday.

Increase a ton is relative, with a holiday inflated Sunday it wouldn't need AS big of a bump as say a regular weekend. Still think it's upper range, but being 16m+ after Saturday isn't out of the equation. Only needs a +35 and -25% and it's comfortably over 22m.

  7. What over dramatic tripe... Luiz makes it read like he has never followed box office before. Whats he gonna say when Migration is -90% week to week and 80%+ all this week??

    🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Specifically seems what really spelled the end for Ferdinand was 80%+ weekly drops for the 1/8-1/11 weekdays. The worst case for Migration would be following the rest of Ferdinand's run out verbatim, which would mean barely missing out on $100mil. I don't think theaters will be compelled to drop it as soon as they did Ferdinand though because it is earning more money and doesn't have any significant competition while Ferdinand had Paddington 2 opening.

That would be normal for most family leaning films. The week of 1/1-1/7 in this calendar is still a holiday for a big % of schools. Then on 1/8 99% of schools are back so Migration will have a drop that day alone of 80%+ from Sunday and at least the same from 1/1 since it was NYD.

And yes, as noted above Ferdinand was also 1 full week later into its run. Means that it has less contracted space to keep on top of the back to school lag.

OT: Family made Christmas season movie plans.  We decided nothing was worth full price b/c no movie got 6 votes.  So, we took our 2 leading vote getters - Migration and Aquaman (2 votes each - I didn't vote for either one:) - and saw one tonight at our independent theater (which kept discount Tuesday) and we'll see one next Tuesday with today's Atom deal.

So, today was Migration.  And my girls said it was what Secret Life of Pets wanted to be.  No one hated it, not even my "hates all kids movies" husband.  It had some beautiful and amazing animation sequences and a really nice soundtrack.  And it didn't overstay its welcome.  And my bottom 3 loved it.  That said...

I agree with my spouse that it's Soarin' over Illumination.  If you all have been to Disney, you know the ride, and this movie felt like a version of a themepark ride.  In all ways good and bad.  Everyone's happy to ride it.  But, it's virtually plot-less as a series of vignettes, even for a kids' movie.  It's like cotton candy - sugary, sweet, and virtually non-existent.

    Here are our actual grades.

Me - B- b/c I'm being generous.  Look, it's beautiful, but kinda boring for adults.  That said, my kids and teens loved it, and the cute family of 7 with little kids were in awe.  So, it wasn't made for me and it was short, so I never got too bored.

Spouse - C - one of his highest kid movie grades

    Oldest girl - B-

    2nd girl - A-

    Oldest Teen Boy - A-

    Youngest Boy - A-

It is a perfect Christmas release.  There won't be fights after this movie.  No one's gonna complain about X, Y, or Z.  People will just say the ducks were cute...and they were...

We did the same ($4 discounts) and this post really sums up my family's pov on it as well.

Our oldest wants to see Wonka but had to keep the 2.5 and 6 year old in mind.

2009 was an anomaly due to Avatar, as well as Christmas Day falling on a Friday. the top 4 movies in 2008 generate $43m, and in 2010 $35m. $70m was never the baseline. I'd imagine everything was selling out in 2009.

Trying to get tickets for Sherlock was bonkers that day 😂 I ultimately don't recall if it was that or Avatar that we watched (saw both that weekend on different days.) Such. Busy season that truly hasnt been repeated. But then again, the same could be said about 2009 as a whole. That year was like the final bit of the old ways and it all changed after that.

  11. Deep rural Texas and for most, Disney as an entire company can go jump off a cliff. Which is funny when I know many have D+. Middle America has a big issue with the company just as M37 said, but it had been brewing for a long time before the Florida stupidity.

Cost and unappealing product are definitely a major factor. I have 4 kids, and they adore most of this stuff. Guess what, Mario was the only film we have taken them to in theaters and it was due to a $4 ticket deal. Can't afford to take them all out for $12+ a pop in the nice theaters when I just paid $120 for an entire years membership for their favorite Children's science place (and I have access in all major cities in the state/nation.)

@TwoMisfits keeps harping the price point stuff for the family films, and I think some of yall just don't get it, but she is 100% right. We have watched every major family film, but all on streaming because it's what we can afford. No plans for Wish, Trolls or Migration either. 🤷‍♂️

What gets me is the idea that Marvel is just sitting on its hands (or if one prefers burying their heads in the sand).

    They've delayed multiple shows/films.

    They've retooled shows/radically reworked projects.

They've cut back on pace of content.

There are rumors that even more serious changes are afoot.

What exactly more do folks want?  A notarized and dated apology with a Commitment To Be Better?

Marvel might have done many things this year (and looks to be doing in the near future) but "just brush off failures" isn't one of them.

Wouldn't be BOT if everyone was logical and even keeled about what is happening versus playing to "muh feelings..." not new, but yeah, this is an odd pearl to clutch on with the evidence we do have.

At least they aren't doubling down like WB did with Flash on Marvels as if it was the best thing to have hit cinema before it flopped to the heavens.

COVID contributed to killing my Dad less than two years ago, believe me I don't forget anything involving COVID. It definitely hurt Shang-Chi at the box office.

I hear this, watching Shang-Chi with the wife was the last thing we did before covid turned my world upside down. Killed my dad and nearly my mom before it ran it's course. So sorry you have the same outcome.

Is it just me or are FNAF's weekday numbers really weak?

Weak is relative, weak yes if it was drawing the adult crowd. But considering how young the demos were, it seems fine to me. Caveat being of course that its also frontloaded.

Yeah, the Queen Latifah show is appointment viewing for my mom but she would find the Equalizer movies way too violent. Denzel and the Queen need to do another movie together, though.

The worlds colliding were just relatable enough I guess. Originally it debuted the same night as the show based on that time Harry Styles moved in with normies. Happy Together made it 13 episodes; The Neighborhood has 105 eps in 5 seasons. Bob Hearts Abishola is another "culture clash" sitcom that's racked up several seasons on CBS (though it probably helped to have Mike of Mike & Molly).

Neighborhood never hit for my wife and I, but we love Bob & Abishola. As with most comedies, its the supporting cast (same with Ghosts). If your supporting cast can't carry weight its hard to build beyond the beginning.

It’s weird how little people cared for that movie. After the first one seemed to be a well received sort of superhero family movie  I thought the second one would break out a little, but instead it got dragged down with the rest of the DCU. Oh well, here’s hoping Blue Beetle does a bit better, especially OS

Its also just a mediocre hohum of a film. Wife and I had a chance to finally watch it last week and my wife said it was stupid and dull and she loved the first one. I could care less for either of them.

BB at least looks interesting? Not sure if that makes a difference anymore tbh, but it doesnt exactly look the same. Imo.

Why are people acting like when you have kids and job you have less free time is some sort of revelation? Is this what happens when we get older, we start going "ahhh you kids don't know anything about life. I have RESPONSIBILITIES" no matter what.

Its not a revelation, as much as the proverbial "when its my turn I won't do that / be that way / etc," that life bites you with. Similar to how when I have kids they will never .... and then you wake up one day and realize that you lived in a fantasy world as a young "care free" adult.

For years a movie every Friday night was our norm, and we had our group who went - then it changed one by one as responsibilities were added or changed. It is just a fact of life - and a prime reason why films that attract the older crowd due on average tend to leg it out, versus the rush of the younger set.

I've made it to the theater twice so far this year - once to take my kids to Mario and once for a date night with my wife when we saw Guardians. But that took a month to set up and ensure and it was a 6 hour window by the time driving and dinner were factored in, and we stayed local in my rural area. The kind of screen truly needed for MI would add 2 hours of drive time. Somethings fall by the wayside, not due to lack of interest but it ends up not being a bigger priority like it was 20 years ago.
