    Lolwut?

Toy Story, Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians would like a word with you.

None of those were sold on that premise, specifically.

    Toy Story isn't pets

Lady and the Tramp is a romantic dramedy that includes pets, but Disney's marketing never sold it as "what do your pets do when you're not around?"

101 Dalmatians has more of a case, but the tone is far more serious than SLoP and the movie isn't sold specifically on what the dalmatians do when Roger and Anita aren't around.

The difference is that SLOP is being sold as a happy-go-lucky comedy. I don't see it having any real serious moments.

"what if animals could talk" is an original concept? LOL.

No, but "what do your pets do when you're not at home?" is (relatively speaking).

They did mention it was Toy Story-esque in terms of plot, so it's not as if they're claiming it's completely original :P

Weekend forecast for returning films (I'm not the least bit confident in my predictions for the new releases), based on Thursday numbers...

    The Angry Birds Movie

    Friday: $7.71M (+290%)

    Saturday: $12M (+55.6%)

    Sunday: $8.25M (-31.2%)

    Monday: $2.32M (-71.9%)

    SECOND WEEKEND FOUR-DAY TOTAL: $30.3M (-20.7%)

    PROJECTED 54-DAY TOTAL: $167M (4.38x)

    Captain America: Civil War

    Friday: $4.52M (+118%)

    Saturday: $6.05M (+34%)

    Sunday: $5.7M (-5.85%)

    Monday: $4.63M (-18.7%)

    FOURTH WEEKEND FOUR-DAY TOTAL: $20.9M (-36.5%)

    PROJECTED EIGHT-WEEK TOTAL: $404M (2.25x)

    Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

    PROJECTED THREE-WEEK TOTAL: $10.1M (2.05x)

That Monday drop for Angry Birds is ridiculously huge.

Generally, $28 million for the 3-day on MD weekend means $33-35 million for the 4-day.

oh god, why did i go so high on X-Men. I knew it was dropping.

And the BFG, lol. Damn you Spielberg

    1) Captain America: Civil War 450
    2) Finding Dory 375
    3) Secret Life of Pets 305
    4) Suicide Squad 300
    5) X-Men Apocalypse 245
    6) Independence Day: Roland's Reckoning 215
    7) Jason Bourne 185
    8) Star Trek Beyond 165
    9) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 150
    10) Ghostbusters 145

    11) Central Intelligence 125
    12) The BFG 125
    13) Legend of Tarzan 115
    14) Angry Birds 105
    15) Warcraft 98

Not too bad of a predict. I'd bump Tarzan and Warcraft for Pete's Dragon and The Founder. Less competition in August, and I've got a feeling both will get decent WOM, going into Labor Day weekend. I also think Central Intelligence will be the breakout hit/comedy of Summer 2016 ($175 million+ DOM).

Didn't play Summer Game, but my top 15 would go like this (based on Memorial Day Weekend):

    1. Finding Dory: $445 million
    2. Captain America - Civil War: $420 million
    3. Suicide Squad: $315 million
    4. The Secret Lives of Pets: $275 million
    5. Central Intelligence: $225 million
    6. Independence Day - Resurgence: $215 million
    7. Star Trek Beyond: $190 million
    8. X-Men - Apocalypse: $185 million
    9. Jason Bourne: $165 million
    10. The Angry Birds Movie: $135 million
    11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Out of the Shadows: $125 million
    12. Pete's Dragon: $115 million
    13. Ghostbusters: $110 million
    14. The BFG: $105 million
    15. The Conjuring 2: $100 million

  5. With how bad Alice 2 is looking to do over the 4-day, Angry Birds should hold much better than expected. I think Civil War and Jungle Book will be helped out slightly as well.

Alice might barely skid past $80 million DOM. BFG and Pete's Dragon just might finish ahead of it

    X-Men - Apocalypse: $75 million/$91 million

Alice Through the Looking Glass: $31 million/$38 million

    Angry Birds: $25.5 million/$32 million ($79 million)

Captain America - Civil War: $20.5 million/$25 million ($382 million)

    Neighbors 2: $12.5 million/$15.5 million ($44 million)

The Nice Guys: $7.5 million/$9 million ($24 million)

The Jungle Book: $7.5 million/$9.5 million ($341 million)

    Money Monster: $4.25 million/$5 million ($35 million)

Alice 2 bombs. X-Men surprises. Holdovers are stronger than ever.(an early prediction).

I could see Angry Birds finishing within $5 million of Alice 2 over the 4 day  it's not that crazy for a $30-35 million 4 day to happen

Civil War, Neighbors 2, Nice Guys, JB, Money Monster and Zootopia all should hold well, too since Alice 2 is bombing hard and X-Men might only do 75-80 for the 4 day

I wonder how much the TC for The Darkness will drop.

That one's gone from my local theaters along with Mother's Day. Zootopia will be gone within the next week.

Well 3 months in wide release for a non-Oscar frontrunner is pretty excellent!

Deadline is out of their mind again

That combo, which together could reach $160M, is set to push the four-day B.O. up by at least 55% over last year’s FSSM total of $194.9M. Last year’s figure was the third-lowest Memorial Day weekend at the box office since 2005 after 2012’s $194M and 2010’s $192.8M. This year’s holiday could potentially rank as the second best with a four-day total of $300M-plus. 2013 posted the best Memorial Day weekend holiday ever with $314.2M.

They are calling for 160m for the openers and a 100% hold from the holdovers for the 4 days for 300m+

Yeah, $300 million+ for the 4-day won't happen. Neighbors 2, Nice Guys, Angry Birds and Civil War would all have needed to do better this last weekend for that to happen. Plus, Alice 2 would need to break out slightly and X-Men would have to equal DOFP

I could see this for the 4-day, though:

    1. X-Men: $95 million
    2. Alice 2: $65 million
    3. Angry Birds: $30 million
    4. Civil War: $23.5 million
    5. Neighbors 2: $12.5 million
    6. The Nice Guys: $9.5 million
    7. The Jungle Book: $8.5 million
    8. Money Monster: $5 million
    9. Zootopia: $1.5 million
    10. The Darkness: $1 million

    Still way below $300 million+

Angry Birds seems a bit weak for the 4-day... should do $27-30 million over the 4-day.. $23m fits for the 3-day, though.

I think it will do better than Daddy's Home did for sure. This Christmas looks way more balanced in terms of big releases than last year. Passengers, Sing and Assassin's Creed can all do really well the week after Rogue One.

Well considering Rogue One should do $400-500 million less than Episode VII, I'd expect all three of those (plus Office Christmas Party and Silence) to do moderately well.

December 2016 is definitely well-balanced (my bullish predicts below)

    1. Rogue One: $470 million

    3. Sing: $185 million
    4. Silence: $130 million

    8. La La Land: $75 million
    9. Collateral Beauty: $40 million
    10. The Bye-Bye Man: $30 million
    11. Why Him?: $25 million
    12. Kidnap: $20 million

    1. Star Wars Episode VIII: $720 million
    2. Beauty and the Beast: $475 million

Wow at that THE JUNGLE BOOK drop. I thought it would be hit hard.

Since it's more of a live-action tentpole than an animated kids movie (good WOM helps, too), I'm not too shocked. Most expected $10-11 million for the weekend.

It'll hold well next weekend as well, because of double features w/ Alice 2 and Memorial Day. $350-360 million DOM is looking good.

    For the other films:

Angry Birds is on its way to $120-150 million DOM

Neighbors 2 might miss $50 million DOM (with a $17-18 million OW)

Nice Guys should hopefully leg its way to $35-40 million DOM

Civil War is finishing where everyone expected it to until a couple months ago

  13. Things are looking good for Angry Birds, bad for Neighbors 2, and meh for The Nice Guys

    Angry Birds: $43-48 million OW

    Neighbors 2: $23-26 million OW

The Nice Guys: $11-13 million OW

Angry Birds should do $120-160 million DOM.

Neighbors 2 should do $60-65 million DOM.

The Nice Guys should do $35-55 million DOM.

    Hopefully, Alice 2 and X-Men both finish above $150 million+ DOM, and X-Men does $200 million+ DOM.

Are they going to market this to kids?

This seems like it doesn't have a demo. Too kid-friendly to draw in a lot of teens/adults, but too scary to draw in a lot of kids.

Kids will have Storks, Miss Peregine and somewhat Middle School.

Teens have Ouija 2 specifically for them and they cross over with a couple other films this fall.

Adults will have Magnificent Seven, Deepwater Horizon, Girl on the Train, Birth of a Nation, Underworld 5, Jack Reacher 2 and Inferno (plus Sully and some more September entries).

Hope this can find an audience.

2018 schedule is not certain but in 2017, the big ones seem to be :

    Lego Batman (Feb) #2

Beauty and the Beast (March) #1

    Kong:Skull Island(March)

    Wolverine (March) #3

    Fast 8 (April)

Fast 8 will make more DOM than Wolverine 3, so that should be #3.

I don't see Wolverine going from $135 million DOM to $250 million+ DOM just because it's R-rated and Hugh Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine.

$160-180 million would be a reasonable range for it.

I still think this year might be smaller than the last one. I don't think this summer is going to measure up to Jurassic World, Inside Out and Minions. And of course we have no TFA in December.

X-Men, Dory, ID42, Pets, Bourne 4 and Suicide Squad could all do $200 million+ DOM. With Alice 2, possibly Central Intelligence and Star Trek 3 doing $150 million+ DOM.

    And there's contenders for $100 million+ DOM.

I think Summer 2016 will be fine and might surpass 2015 due to just how weak late July and all of August were last summer. (4-5 films might end up finishing past $67 million for August 2016, while only 1 did so last August)

We have better November and December titles this year imo. DOCTOR STRANGE, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM and MOANA could be bigger than MOCKINGJAY II, SPECTRE and THE PEANUTS MOVIE of last year. ASSASSIN'S CREED, PASSENGERS and SING among others will also help ROGUE ONE match or at least finish close to what TFA did last year.

    Doctor Strange: $210 million

    Fantastic Beasts: $245 million

    Moana: $310 million

$610 million vs. $765 million. This November looks stronger for sure!

Plus, Billy Lynn, Trolls, Bad Santa 2, Allied and the other wide releases should be enough to equal November 2015's other releases.

And if anything December 2016 will just be more spread out

    Rogue One: $415 million

    Passengers + Sing + AC: $450 million

Remaining releases (including Patriots Day and Silence): $400 million

Its crazy to think that in some years we had to wait until September to get 1 300m film (2014 I am looking at you!) and in some years we never have more than 2 or 3 that pass the mark total but we already have 5!!! and it's not even the halfway point yet.

With a potential 3-5 to go.

Dory and Rogue One seem very likely. Suicide Squad, Pets and Moana all have reasonable chances. ID42 and Fantastic Beasts have an outside shot.

    7 $300 million+ DOM grossers is somehow a conservative expectation now :o

    >Implying that Disney animated musicals aren't Oscar friendly in the music categories.

I'm just saying the Oscar voters' primary demographic is more inclined to support a well-done live-action musical over a well-done animated musical.

2007 is a great example. "Falling Slowly" beat the songs from Enchanted. Any other year, Enchanted would have won Best Original Song, but Once came out in 2007, also, and happened to receive critical acclaim.

  18. I don't know why anyone is shocked.

This isn't a bunch of critics for Criterion or AFI or some "prestigious" organization.

It's average people saying what their favorite movies are. People tend to include recent films and blockbusters in their top 100... not that shocking tbh.

You'll always have your own personal taste outside of this list.

Oh no dude, it's just getting started. Dark Knight, Avengers, Interstellar, Force Awakens, Hunger Games, and Every Pixar Film, these will be top 25.

...it's just a silly list. Your personal favorites of the 100 greatest films will always be in your personal list :)

Plus, only TDK and a couple Pixar films have a decent chance at making the top 25. I don't see Avengers, Interstellar or any of the HG films making it if we don't see them after #70. I definitely don't see them making the top 50.

It's not like any of the films so far are truly awful. Other than Civil War and Do the Right Thing, I can at least understand why they're included. Most of the entries are at least solid enough to where I don't mind seeing something that assuredly won't be included in 2017 (Civil War).
