  1. It seems like it would make more sense to just leave them as TBD then.
  2. In a worst-case scenario where theaters ARE shut down for the entire year, and don't reopen until January (or later), it seems like it would pretty much kill ultra-big budget movies. There's no way you could justify spending $300M (200 production plus 100 p&a) on any movie, not even Black Panther 2. There would simply be no guarantees that the audience would come back. Or that there wouldn't be another theater shutdown the following year.
  3. Once again, Disney has been cooking the books! They're obviously trying to artificially inflate Mulan's numbers. They're trying to make it look like a big hit instead of the flop that it is. Caught red handed!
  4. Were they reporting presales from a month ago???
  5. erc twitter says it finally gave up on April 10, now "tbd"
  6. So just judging by China, you're not going to want to open your giant Black Widow/Wonder Woman tentpole in the first week or two after theaters reopen. (Which we already knew, but here's some hard numbers.) https://deadline.com/2020/03/china-movie-theaters-open-500-international-box-office-1202890025/ It'll be interesting to hear reports from China over the new few weeks.
  7. Yes indeed, they are an impressive machine. When things do restart, it'll be interesting to see if the big studios like Disney and WB are able to ramp up much faster than others. Speaking of production restarting, it seems like we will probably be at a point (hopefully as soon as this summer) where things are okay to proceed again. But I'm thinking, it may not be the same for every country. Will a production in Australia be able to start up a few weeks or even a month sooner than a production in UK or US? Or vice versa? If so, part of the release schedule going forward may be decided by which films picked the right country to film in. Or do we think it would start all at the same time globally?
  8. Did you mean to respond to someone else? I was responding to someone about Falcon and Winter Soldier. There's no question at this point that both movie and tv schedules are going to face a massive upheaval.
  9. Bob Iger officially announced it would debut in August during the quarterly investors call about 6 or 7 weeks ago.
  10. With filming not yet complete, there's a very realistic chance that Falcon and Winter Soldier will not be ready to debut by the planned August release date. We could be looking at a significant wait for new MCU content.
  11. So now I'm wondering, how are theaters going to reopen? Obviously we have no clue what the future holds at this point, just a broad hope/expectation that things get back to normal, whatever that word may mean going forward. But if you start with the basic assumption that theaters will reopen, the question is how they would go about it. Would 4000 theaters nationwide all announce in unison that they're all opening at one time on June 1 (or September 1 or whenever)? Would it go state-by-state? Could theaters in California open a week or three before theaters in Florida? Chain by chain? What would they play? A mix of current movies and Marvel/Harry Potter/etc marathons? You have to imagine they would only schedule a skeleton crew to work. In fact I'm sure some theater employees are currently applying at grocery stores, gas stations, and other places that are remaining open. So some theaters could be fairly understaffed when they reopen. But assuming small numbers, of both employees and movie goers, would some theaters, lets say a 20-screen megaplex, only bother to schedule movies on 10 of those screens? It's not like any movie, at least in that first experimental week of reopening, is going to need more than one screen to play on. When will studios be brave enough to open new movies? You have to think the first weeks will only see smaller movies open, but it's possible that the only way to really get the audiences to head back to theaters in big numbers will be to open a really big blockbuster like Black Widow or Wonder Woman. It'll probably take something like that (or Mulan/Soul/Top Gun/whatever) to encourage people to really head back to theaters.

  13. Note that without Disney reporting, it’s near impossible for any box office analyst to assemble any type of top 10 chart for either domestic or global B.O. Well, that's the end of this thread.

  16. Gal Gadot getting a bit of bad press right now. Likely to be forgotten by the time this movie comes out, whenever that may be, but you never know. I don't think anyone is calling her a bad person or anything, just tone deaf. If it ever gets worse than that, there will likely be backlash against the backlash, so for now I'll guess no real negative effect on WW84.
  17. It's gonna come back when theaters reopen, right? Surely Hollywood won't dump 5 new openers on the market all at once when theaters reopen. Holdovers like Onward should have a chance to continue their runs. Of course, as soon as the older movies start making some decent money, studios will see that as a sign that it's safe to dump some new titles on the market. We may get a few movies that are released super quickly with very little time for marketing.

  21. I saw a few theaters with showtimes for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire today. I don't know if that was planned way in advance, or if it was a last-minute space filler due to releases being postponed. And at this point, getting onto screens in 10 or so theaters might be enough to get you into the top 10 nationwide.
  22. Disagreed. I think there's a finite limit to how long you can keep people locked up in their homes. Society can't shut down for too long. Two months from now, we'll be able to say whether all these shutdowns worked or not. If they worked, and covid numbers are way down, then everyone will want to pat themselves on the back and get back to work. If they don't work, and numbers stay high for two straight months, then people will say there's no point, and we might as well get on with business as usual as much as it's possible anymore. We'll get a preview in a few weeks when China fully opens everything up again.
