  1. Funny enough, I didn't really care enough about this movie until it became part of the culture war nonsense. I only want to see it succeed to shut those guys up. All this being said, I'm glad to see it get good reviews, the Disney live-action remakes haven't been my thing at all. Then again, I am not the target audience, so there's that.
  2. Exactly this. I mean, China is the country that in some warped and dangerous logic were blaming Africans for a covid outbreak (and racially attacked them) and created that horrible racist advertisement where a black man was put into a washing machine by a Chinese girl and was "washed" into a Chinese man for her acceptance. The latter was so bad that even folks in China had to protest that racist nonsense. Disney wouldn't have reduced Finn's image on the Star Wars poster in China for no reason. South Korea is such a weird case because some of them seem to worship "whiteness" and reject everything black to the point that they seem to be plagiarizing and appropriating African-American music (and imagery) without ever giving credit to them. Seriously, there's someone that looks like a Korean 50 Cent and Omarion. There is research that has shown how much some East Asians worship whiteness and define whiteness as the pinnacle of "beauty". It is what it is. To bring it closer to topic, this isn't really general racism as much as it is targeted anti-blackness which is a separate thing unto itself. That's why the term "BIPOC" is a thing in the US because racism unfortunately isn't a one size fits all phenomenon. Everyone living in North America knows how much the Indigenous and Black people on the continent have and still suffer from generations of racism, economic redlining, system inequality and just downright disdain. The attacks on TLM is targeted anti-blackness which has risen steadily since Obama became President and Trump came after him. I can't imagine how anyone can look at Halle Bailey and ignore her talent and her beauty all because they feel "MerMiAdS mUSt Be WhItE!!". I can tell you that a lot of minorities in the US were stunned at the racist reaction towards TLM because mermaids aren't real and neither is Ariel. Now, I am not saying that everyone in these countries (i.e China and S.Korea) is racist but they do have a thing of wide-spread anti-blackness (especially in China) and often times repeat white supremacist talking points. There really should be a discussion amongst themselves about why some of them seem to worship whiteness and have disdain for people that have darker skin. I know this all comes across as harsh but sometimes, the truth just needs to be said.
  3. Just to clarify, Monday was a holiday here in Canada. EDIT: Just noticed that it's been clarified already. NVM then.
  4. Quick question, are American films getting fully released in China? I read somewhere that some movies were getting limited releases and I wasn’t sure how accurate that info was.
  5. EC has a point. I don't understand the doom and gloom for an Ant-man movie opening to over $100m. I legit don't get it. If this was Iron Man or Spider-man or even Thor, I would understand and I'm pretty sure Marvel will push the panic buttons. But Ant-man is one of Marvel's smaller franchises and even that's opening to over $100m.
  6. Exactly this. SO many absolutely silly takes. I can even take the silly takes but the revisionism is a complete turn-off.
  7. Haven't been posting here much lately but Ant-man 3 has increased from Ant-man 2 which increased from Ant-man 1. Yeah, Ant-man played a big role in Endgame but folks...it's Ant-man.
  8. It's pretty bad in Eastern and Central Canada too. In central British Columbia, it's been -38 degrees for two days now. The wind chill is between -44 and -46 degrees. Needless to say, moving about is rather difficult.
  9. To be honest, given that the first Avatar came out 12 years ago, I think A2 doing about $1.5bn-$1.6bn isn't really bad at all. Moreso when the pandemic is still a factor in certain markets (specifically China).
  10. Deadline is saying Avatar 2 is opening between $130m-$150m. Not a record (the young ones won't get that joke, that was from the good old days). This is a firmly "next wait until next weekend" situation.
  11. Just to piggy back off what Baumer said, there's full on covid panic in Canada right now. All the news is about how we're experiencing an unprecedented surge in cases which isn't exactly encouraging news to film goers. I'm in Saskatoon and the only way to get into a theatre (for all adults) is to show evidence of FULL vaccination. Granted the Canadian box office doesn't add much to the totals, it's still something. Also, these numbers need to taken into account with the pandemic being a factor. We've seen covid surges in different areas of the world and the news of the omicron variant being the dominant strain of covid will likely keep a lot of people (myself included) in-doors for the holidays. All in all, it's not surprising the numbers are turning out to be depressed. That being said, any statstical modelling or analysis being done at the moment needs to take the pandemic into account as the "unknown factor". On a purely academic perspective, any model that doesn't take it into account is simply inaccurate.
  12. Matrix Resurrections was pretty disappointing. It's definitely "a stay at home on watch on TV" movie.
  13. I'm sorry if I came across as rude. But I'm not conviced that Sony could have pulled this off themselves considering how screwed up the Amazing Spider-man series turned out. I'm not even convinced that Garfield and Tobey would have returned to Spider-man at all if it were produced by Sony alone.
  14. Not necessarily. It's the revisionist history that's grating. The MCU Spider-man series is the first series of Spider-man movies that have trended upward. Yes, Spider-man 3 was a massive hit but it declined significantly in the US and got a very mixed reception critically. The Amazing Spider-man series trended downward, got a pretty negative reception and left Sony with practically nowhere to go with the character. Seriously, Amy Paschal literally called Kevin Feige and said "help". https://heroichollywood.com/kevin-feige-the-amazing-spider-man-3-marvel-uninterested/ Sony were struggling with live action Spider-man movies and the only reason why we have this "Spider-man revival" is because of his introduction into the MCU. Peter featuring prominently in some of Marvel's biggest movies and some of the biggest movies of all time has added to Spider-man's popularity among general audiences especially after what Sony did to the character. Anything else is just flat-out revisionism. I've been on these boards for around 10 years now and this place can have some terrible takes; suggesting NWH would have made this sort of money featuring Garfield from a series that wasn't very well received critically or commercially and Maguire from the original Spider-man series which ended with the very disappointing Spider-man 3 is one of the worst I've seen.
  15. $122m OD, amazing. It's basically going to gross more in one weekend than the Amazing Spider-man 2 did in its entire lifetime domestic. Heck, it should even get close to the overall domestic gross of The Amazing Spider-man which did $262m domestic. If the arrangment between Sony and Marvel continues, Marvel really re-negotiate the 25% box office or whatever it is they get from these movies. I still remember the absolute negativity around the Amazing Spider-man series.
  16. Quoted for truth. Its that kind of negativity that has stopped some of us me (me) from posting here for about 5-6 years now.
  17. Exactly. Theres a contingent of people that have been brain washed to label everything led by women and minorities as woke. It’s basically part of the “4-Channing” of popular culture where people abandon critical thought and give in to ridiculous emotion. It’s a part of the rise of anti-intellectualism that’s become the norm due to our “leaders” preferring to gain support by blatant lies (the dishonesty in political discourse nowadays is pretty troubling to be honest). I still recall the noise over Captain Marvel and how “feminist” it was but upon watching the movie, i was surprised at how much the film makers consciously moved away from such themes. Same with Black Panther where some people said it was all about racism when that wasn’t even the main theme of the movie. It’s so ridiculous because a movie like Joker was far more explicitly political and even “woke” than Captain Marvel but the alt-right adjacent dude bros didn’t complain because it’s lead is a straight white man (I mean, the movie basically criticized the country’s health care system, treatment of the mentally and the poor). There are works where the main theme is social political in nature but not every minority led or female led work is woke. That’s just innate bigotry/bias at work. BoP isn’t doing very well because 1) it’s rated-R, Harley isn’t that popular of a character to risk a big budget R-rated movie 2) it’s marketing campaign made it look like garbage, honestly, I had zero interest in the movie after seeing the trailers. I was surprised it got such good reviews but at that point, I’d already decided not to see it at all.
  18. I dont follow box office much again but how does TROS miss a billion if its already at $724 million this week?
  19. Funny enough, I really enjoyed TROS. Maybe because I heard so many negative things but going in I expected something much worse but i really enjoyed this. I don't know, I think reaction to this movie is going to be all over the place.
  20. I've actually seen the movie and to some extent I agree with Grace. The movie has some serious problems and some acts and depictions of violence kind of make no sense. Like at all.
  21. Avengers Endgame is already over $700m+ dom and will tap out around $850m. The "its crumbling" talk doesn't really track because its already fucking huge (especially since it's essentially a pre-summer movie). The movie could end up being the highest grossing movie of all time WW unadjusted. That's pretty much the end of the story.
