  1. On a different note i see NO WAY that Lionsgate cancels Allegiant Part 2. I mean, I'm sure contractually it would be a nightmare, and splitting it was an awful decision, but it's literally one more film that has been marketed as a two part series. It just seems like a sunk cost at this point to me. Plus, this will close with around 80 domestic and make up the difference internationally to come close to breaking even. It's not the travesty some people are making it out to be.
  2. If we're making the argument that J Law isn't a draw I don't think you CAN make that argument that any actor under 40 is. Sure she's been in franchises, but she's been a HUGE part in those franchises putting up the numbers they did. The Hunger Games was a perfect storm (with a lot of other factors besides her), but the numbers Catching Fire put up had a LOT to do with her being the it girl (as much as I hate that phrase). Same goes for the X-Men franchise. I certainly don't think she's the MAIN draw for that series but I think her involvement got a lot of cross over appeal it had been missing prior. For me Silver Linings is ALL J-Law. If you want to argue that it's David O.'s name carrying the project I'd counter with her involvement in Silver Linings and American Hustle is what got the mainstream audience to know HIS name. Joy had terrible marketing and came out in a crowded season, yet it still put up decent numbers. It certainly wasn't a miss, just not the home run of their last collaborations (but it's also a much tougher sell). Like Baumer said, the girl (and her agent) have made some damn smart choices in terms of what projects she does but that doesn't mean she's not a part of the reason that seats get filled. I think Passengers will give us a good idea of what she's capable of (yes Pratt helps, but his certainly not a bigger draw) but the thing I'd LOVE to see is a flat out comedy with her as the lead. I know her and Amy Schumer have mentioned they're writing a film together and I think regardless of whether's Schumer's in it or not, with a smart script she could put up HUGE numbers. Everyone already thinks she's the girl next door, let her play one in a film and people will eat. it. up.
  3. Man, today was one of those days that comes around every few years where I saw a double feature and am reminded what gets me so excited about movies. I actually saw Cloverfield first, but back to that in a second... Let's talk about how Zootopia is maybe the most culturally relevant film of the past 3-5 years. Man, this is why I love Disney (and especially Pixar even though this wasn't theirs): they don't dumb down their audience and realize young crowds can handle heavy messages, even if they don't grasp it all at once. The themes they went after for an animation film were NUTS. Factor that in with great animation, smart casting choices and a BRILLIANT script. It's a home run. The only Disney Animation I liked anywhere near this much was Frozen. Now to Cloverfield Lane. HOLY. SHIT. I just cannot believe how incredible this baby is. Will easily end up on my end of year top 10 and I would almost lock a spot in the top 3. I think it's that good. They blended so many genres successfully and made an absolutely riveting experience. I wish this were Oscar bait someway, somehow because I think Goodman's performance deserves a nomination. Winstead will always be a gem (this, Scott Pilgrim and Smashed prove to me she can kill anything). Thank god for movies with smart characters, particularly female protagonists. We don't get enough of that. I will be seeing this many more times in the theater and would recommend it to everyone. It's as must see as it gets. WHAT A WEEKEND.
  4. I feel like that's kind of the point of his entire character....that he can't be broken.
  5. I feel like Cloverfield Lane is actually one of the harder films to predict in recent memory. Cloverfield definitely has a bit of a cult following and the people who love it LOVE it (like myself) but I think a lot of people weren't into the first (which was evident in it's holds). I'm not sure what awareness is either, I have a friend who's more knowledgable than the general public, loved the first and had no idea it was coming out next weekend. I could legit see anything from as low as 15 to as high as 35. I'm just glad it's happening.
  6. That seems like a solid total WW for 5th Wave. I hated it and domestically it's certainly not much of anything but they kept the budget low so in the end this will turn a profit.
  7. Just got back from FINALLY seeing The Revenant. The showing was surprisingly very crowded, probably 80% full. I've been in South Carolina the past few months (I live in Nashville) and everything comes here so so slow. This is the first year I won't have seen all the Best Picture nominees (we never got Brooklyn) in a long time. Anyway, I felt like The Revenant was essentially two things; 1. A showcase for whatever actor got the lead role (thankful it was Leo) and 2. A technical marvel. However, I wouldn't put it in even my top 3 for Best Picture. I know it's the kind of thing the Academy eats up and I'm not downplaying that it's very good but narratively speaking it's a pretty basic story. I also found myself almost getting annoyed at how much was happening to him, it got too impossible for me after about the half way mark and I feel like I lost a lot of the empathy I should have had for his character. Glad I saw it, but still rooting for The Big Short/Mad Max/Spotlight to pull the upset.
  8. Yep and she's who I was referring to in being put off. Lol at someone comparing Star Wars fresh faces to these, I get the sentiment but if you know anything about Becky G you'll no it's a comparison that just doesn't work. Hoping the screenwriters can save this.
  9. I 100% disagree. For the time, those special effects were kind of something to marvel at. If the movie looks like shit, visually, people will not be encouraged to go see it. I grew up as a diehard fan and for about 3 years it was my favorite show as a kid. I'm already on the fence about the film with some of the casting and the fact that its Lionsgate who does a great job of butchering releases but yeah if it looks cheap I won't be seeing it for novelty. I want an update that matches the times and I think most other fans would as well.
  10. Kitsch as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights is both one of the best written and acted roles I've ever seen on television. He can do things with the right material, but he and his agent have made some bad choices, clearly.
  11. I think this has to be in the conversation for most shocking OW in the past decade. I mean, American Sniper will probably take the crown for me for years to come but damn. Even the most optimistic tracking had this at 75 (which would have been GREAT) but this thing has damn near doubled it for the 4 day. What's even more nuts is it will almost have tripled it's budget by mid week, so this is going to be a HUGE hit for Fox. I tried to see it yesterday and it was completely sold out so we went to see Zoolander. Coming from someone who thinks the original really is a comedy classic, I couldn't believe just how bad it was. It played like a really, really shitty SNL skit and all of the films 'big' moments were just rehashes from the first. So many cameos that it became distracting and annoying. I knew it wouldn't live up to the first but it was just a travesty. Gonna try to catch DP either tonight or tomorrow I hear it's fantastic.

  13. I feel like with N Sparks movies you just know some cliches will exist. Moderate to bad southern accents, most likely set in Wilmington or another Outer Banks area, an 'unlikely' pairing. But I do think he has his moments, A Walk to Remember still messes me up. He writes movies for middle aged southern women and theres nothing wrong with that but I don't think it should be a surprise when most of us don't like them.
  14. Lol, it is tough when you're watching the film because the women in it are so ridiculously gorgeous. It is weird to see Daddario play second fiddle because I agree she's about as easy on the eyes as it gets. It worked for me here though for some reason based on characterization.
  15. Man I didn't feel that way at all. I D K, I hate Sparks fare more than not but I don't know what was so contrived about it? The ending I can see where you're coming for, totally. But yeah, I thought it was decent enough. He's had farrrrrr worse adaptations. (see, Safe Haven)
  16. I know SB weekend is always rough but yikes. Anemic for the openers and some really bad holdovers. STX has another hit with The Boy, which is good for them. They should try to do 10-40 million dollar productions like this and see what they can make of themselves. Promising start. KFP3 will be saved by overseas numbers but surely this is the end of the franchise. Fantastic to see SW still getting that coin after all this time. I think 930 is where it lands, discount theaters should be very kind to it. I'll probably get burned alive for saying this but today was my mom's birthday so I agreed to take her to see The Choice. I would say I've seen close to half of the N. Sparks movies (and yes, I think The Notebook is the best but that for me is nowhere near a masterpiece). That being said, the last two I saw which were Safe Haven and The Longest Ride I fucking HATED. The Choice is probably the third (after Notebook and A Walk to Remember) enjoyable experience I've had watching one of his films. It's more of his same stuff but the cast saved it for me. Teresa Palmer is bae.
  17. For me, Banks is the only thing that makes me think this might have SOME chance. I grew up with PR and oddly enough just watched the original movie again a few weeks ago (it did NOT hold up, haha). I think if this were done right it could really be huge. Like 200 DOM huge. But the fact that it's Lionsgate, a cast of unkowns (when I saw Becky G was cast that was kind of the nail in the coffin for me) and a small budget doesn't give me much hope. Banks is the one thing that makes me think maybe they have something good up their sleeves but like someone else said Banks has made good AND bad choices in the past few years. This could just be a payday for her.
  18. Really shows the impact the storm had on last weekend's numbers. The Boy hold is insane and is another really nice little hit for STX after The Gift. That also gives Star Wars a very good shot at 930 plus. Good enough for KFP3, I LOVED the first and for some reason never got around to seeing the 2nd. I don't see anything next week opening over 15.
  19. One, this is ridiculous. Not your opinions, per say, but what you're using to arrive at them. Two, anyone who says No Diggity is bad pop music can GTFO, lol.
  20. This entire film is legit mind boggling to me. Coming from someone who enjoys the mindless fun of films like Underworld and Resident Evil this looks like an absolute shit show. The marketing is god awful, the CGI is laughable and even things like wigs are so, so terrible. Lionsgate in general makes no sense to me, they carved out a niche with Twilight/Hunger Games, made a shit ton of money and have no idea how to market/be a viable studio. I will never forgive them for the floundering of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, but this shit is bonkers. I can honestly see something as low as 12 million, to has a 'high' as 18 million OW, but have a very strong feeling this doesn't make 40 million domestic.
  21. Gitesh Pandya ‏@giteshpandya 4s4 seconds ago #HungerGames #MockingjayPart2 rises to $279.3M after 9th wknd, running 16% behind M1. $282M final likely. $1.45B dom across 4 pics.
