Sure but even in a market like Spain, how much would 2nd week gross amount to, $5m? Saying it's doing about the same as DOS so far (in USD) seems not to be far from the truth.
Hence not apples and apples.
But i don't see BOFA doing better than previous entries to be honest. About the same. So far. It needs that China increase for the billion.
Sorry, it's too soon to say anything. Had the exchange rates been like last year, than yeah, i would have probably sang the same tune. Right now, it could go either way.
There's nothing magical about it. And it has nothing to do with lately. People don't just go "okay, going forward we won't appreciate sequels as much any more". Every movie is its own case. There have been sequels increasing and sequels decreasing. Being good is an important factor but that is not for you to decide. Going by user ratings on sites like RT, IMDB and the likes, there's no indication that Hobbit is not liked.
The odds for it dropping a bit from DOS, increasing a bit or doing the same were... well, the same. Could have gone either way. I believe not many are shocked if the former turns out to be the case, just disappointed (if one wants it to do well, that is).
