That number for Guardians of the Galaxy is as astonishing as that number for Get on Up is disappointing (really thought that would do around $7M at the minimum).
I was just looking at the schedule in the weeks ahead and the only movies being released on August 29 and September 5 are...The November Man, As Above So Below, and The Green Inferno. Oy the box office is gonna look depressing.
And his sister on that show, Emily Van Camp, is not doing bad for herself between headlining a popular/much-talked-about show (Revenge) and a supporting role in Captain America 2 that I assume will extend to other movies in this universe.
It did $371,000 last night but we all know that this is the kind of movie that will make 99.9% of its business over the weekend and not on Thursday night.
One moment in time. People were seeking familiar/comforting comedy at the time and that film fit the bill. Expect the at least 4 years too late sequel next year to drop off big time.
I do think the combo of dead market and great reviews ended up really helping Guardians. I'm excited to see it (and Get on Up) this weekend now when I was kind of "eh, whatever" before, especially since these might be the last movies I see in theaters until Gone Girl.
I think, considering it is really an original property, legs for Guardians will be actually OK. Especially with how bleak the market looks after its third weekend.
Yeah, you can't really compare this to Captain America 2 because it's a completely different time of year. Not that that takes away how impressive this number is for an unknown property with a cast of mostly non-draws.
