  1. Gladiator’s one of my all-time favourite movies for sure. I’ve said this before, but the soundtrack is also killer. Use some of those pieces in the trailers for Gladiator 2 and you’ll have a smash hit. Regarding streaming titles, I’m really hoping Argylle becomes a Kingsman/Lost City type hit. I want streamers to know that theatrical exhibition is a lucrative option. Would love to see more streamers take those theatrical risks. So yea, I’m championing these movies as much as possible.
  2. Canada likely not going to be a great comp for the domestic numbers this weekend since we don’t have a holiday so everything is playing like a “regular” weekend. But Napoleon and Wish are having very solid increases here. Hunger Games is about flat with yesterday, maybe a slight increase.
  3. Just got home from Thanksgiving. It’s basically Eli Roth does Scream, and for the most part it’s genuinely effective. Probably my favourite Roth film (although the bar isn’t super high for me). Final reveal kind of lacks, but the whodunnit leading up is a lot of fun. The kills are inventive and there’s some great tension and atmosphere. Hoping this racks up a couple more bucks before it’s done.
  4. Hunger Games with that Top Gun Maverick drop The movie is genuinely great, and WOM among teens has been stellar. I’m surprised, but not totally shocked at this hold.
  5. Someone will show up to fill that niche. There’s always just that transition period. And who knows, maybe it’s Disney themselves who do it. Theaters rely on hits. It just so happens that those hits were produced largely by Disney the last 10 years. But someone else (my money’s on Universal) will show up to make those hits again.
  6. At this point, I say let Wish burn. I have nothing against the movie, I haven’t seen it myself yet and still plan to this weekend. But as someone who worked at/managed multiple movie theaters from 2015-2022, the amount of egotistical bullying I witnessed from Disney towards exhibition was astonishing. Yes, when you have all the money and power, you will use it. But after some of the demands I’ve seen Disney make from theaters over the years, I have no problem seeing their films (or at least the mediocre or bad ones) tank. Hopefully it allows exhibition to have the power to say no to some of their demands, especially when other studios present much better offers. Yea. So woohoo let’s go Napoleon! Lol
  7. Now THAT’S what happens when you get good WOM. Take notes studios, it’s not that people are rejecting cinema, it’s bad films they’re rejecting.
  8. All I can say is that I know the trailers for Gladiator 2 are going to be EPIC. Zimmer’s score fading in, some shots of some epic battle sequences. However the movie turns out, I think we have the potential for one of the all-time great trailers.
  9. Yep, as eve shows get started I’m also seeing it come down a bit. Walkups not as strong as I expected. Still, 8-8.5 is possible, unless that’s another Canada overindex.
  10. Napoleon continuing to sell extremely well today. Could see it hitting 10M Wednesday with previews if evening shows keep it up.
  11. Yep, more than double Gucci for sure. ATP is also much higher. Mid-30s or beyond wouldn’t shock me at this point.
  12. Wish is selling AWFUL. Not quite under Strange World but definitely under Encanto. I’m about ready to call Napoleon over Wish for the weekend.
  13. Napoleon selling VERY well around here. I could easily see this being a bit of a breakout.
  14. Napoleon’s actually selling REALLY well around me. I know that Wish isn’t a presales movie, but Napoleon is consistently pre-sold 10x Wish Tuesday onward. Wouldn’t be surprised if this can hit high 20s or 30 for the 5-day.
  15. Some of the trackers (can’t remember if it was @keysersoze123) have mentioned that BOSS may be overperforming in Canada and I can 100% confirm that. Having had a chance to look at some Canadian numbers, I’m astonished that this is “only” opening to low 40s. It’s playing like a 70M opener across the board here, with regional comps at individual theaters playing like 23-27M Saturday alone. Crazy numbers overall here. Thanksgiving is also tanking in Canada which is not surprising.
  16. Hell you guys, I taught English last year and Science this year. Not only can we as teachers not get kids to read books, we can’t even get them to read instructions. Sometimes I can’t even get them to read their % grade I’ve given on a test. I’ll give them a test back with the % grade on the front in red pen and they’ll come up to me “what did I get?” “It’s on your test.” ”I ain’t reading that sh**” Even showing videos in class, I cannot get them to pay attention even to a 1-2 minute clip. One of the other teachers took a group to the movie theater last week, and said that everyone groaned when he announced it.
  17. Perhaps it’s just me being Canadian and not having lived in America, but this feels like a weird take. YA dystopia being “dated” nowadays really doesn’t seem to be the root of the issue at all as to why the genre fell off.
  18. More Nolan. More Gerwig. Let creatives run the show, rather than corporate suits.
  19. Both Hunger Games and Trolls are picking up like crazy compared to yesterday. Very good IMs for both I think.
  20. Some, book-tok had made some fantasy authors really popular. But a lot of those books are also in the smut subgenre lol which I doubt would get a big budget adaption. Id love to see a Brandon Sanderson adaptation lol.
  21. The YA genre isn’t “dead” just like the superhero genre isn’t “dead.” All that’s happened is audiences stopped showing up for them “no matter what.” Studios kept putting out bad YA movies, and being based on a book isn’t enough to be a blockbuster anymore. Same as how being a comic book movie isn’t enough to be a hit anymore. If they can adapt a popular book and make a quality movie, audiences will still show up. Same as how they will still show up for a quality CBM (Spiderverse, Guardians 3).
  22. Throwback to when Catching Fire made 25M Thursday previews. I honestly miss early 2010s box office
