China Box Office Thread | Deadpool & Wolverine- July 26
Wrath replied to A Marvel Fanboy's topic in China At The Box Office
Yeah, I find that kind of astonishing. I mean, there have been plenty of US-centric movie series that have done poorly overseas (Jason Bourne, every Star Trek movie ever, etc) but the sheer magnitude of Hunger Games' failure to connect to overseas viewers so far has been singularly impressive. The list of movies in recent years that have been box-office dominating runaway hits in the US and have then gone on to struggle to match their domestic total internationally is pretty short and the Hunger Games' movies feature very prominently. Maybe MJ1 is the movie where it finally breaks out. We'll see. -
Perhaps, but its not like theyre taking screens away from Avatar to show it. Given that its Halloween weekend, its hard to see what else would have been an obviously better call. They had to put *something* on the screens and the other options are all pretty underwhelming. It turned out to be a mistake but it was a worthwhile gamble.

Yeah, that seems about right, though US BO will presumably grow a bit over that period of time. Maybe 10%, ballpark, putting China in line to pass the US in BO in 2019 at just about the same time it passes the US in GDP which seems appropriate. The biggest issue China will likely face in this regard (and this is perhaps a bit Off-topic) is keeping the economy rolling along and stable. Iron ore and coal imports are down to being at best flat with 2013 and possibly starting to even dip down. On the other hand, the fall in oil prices has probably helped a lot. China just needs to hold it together until the baton gets passed, which is easier said than done. But so far, so good. So maybe ~585/95m for GotG total? That's better than I expected. -
A Nolan movie with less than stellar reviews, anyway. Edit - Also, its been a *really* quiet last couple months. I suspect things will perk up again once Interstellar and BH6 are about to hit.

Halloween counts as the holiday season? I'll go by family member: - My 7-year old (girl) is dying to see BH6 then Annie (the 1982 version has been getting a ton of airtime around here lately) - My 11-year old (girl) is dying to see The Hobbit (she's going as Pippin for Halloween) then BH6 - My wife is dying to see Birdman - For me, I'll go with Hobbit. Interstellar was nipping at its heels, and BH6 behind it, but Interstellar's good but not great reviews are denting it slightly for me. So I'm going to say Birdman is now in 2nd place.

Yeah, this is a trend that's likely to just keep on going. Barring a really severe economic turnaround, I think China will surpass the US as the most important country for new movie releases in general by about 2020, and in certain areas its already happened. -

What's the definition of a "horror film" for the questions? Is Nightcrawler a horror film? How about Dracula? -
Xykon the Sorceror: "Ok, lets practice your big reveal line." Monster in the Dark: "Order of the Stick! Your broken corpses will taste delicious lightly seasoned with nutmeg!" X: "That's...that's what you're going with? As your big line? Your first impression?" MitD: "Not scary enough? Oh, I had another one... Order of the Stick! I will bath in your blood with some lavender bath gel and a good loofa!" X: "You know what? My bad. Just stick with the first one." MitD: "Oh, you liked it after all?" X: "No. I just lowered my expectations." Given the way things are going, I'm just happy that it looks like around half of my top 20 will make the list at all, and I'm hoping the top 10 are at least mostly movies that I included on my list at all.
