  1. Totally agree, Blanks. I thought the movie was pretty bad but I'm very glad that a lower budget film in January, that doesn't have to be part of some grand Iraq War Cinematic Universe, has broken out to be huge. I disagree about Cooper selling the film but other than that you're very much right.
  2. It's fine to find a movie boring, there are plenty of films that I think sound boring so choose not to try. Boyhood is one of them. But awards bait? Why would you film a movie for 12 years just to get awards? And why release it so early in the year? Watch Whiplash in the cinema or don't bother at all. There aren't many films I would say that about but it's true in this case. Also, you should stop spouting that rubbish about films not being art or whatever it is you're trying to say.
  3. I don't know what the budget is but it's not looking good. Moving it to get trampled on by Star Wars was a strange move too.
  4. I agree, usually there's discussion about the films themselves and not just box office in these threads, not to mention the countless posts with silly gifs or videos that have nothing to do with the topic. But there was clearly a bit of upset among some people and I guess it's just safer to get rid of all those posts.
  5. Yeah, I wish studios would have more confidence in their films to actually release major films in the "bad" months.
  6. The fact that it's getting a sequel doesn't make it a franchise. If American Sniper got a sequel, would the first one then be a franchise film? There's a difference between being based on existing material, and being part of a franchise.
  7. Uhh... what does being married have to do with box office appeal? Yeah, if a film goes into limited release then gets a wide release, it's absurd to consider the limited release's first weekend the OW.
  8. It wouldn't be a "miracle" if Age of Ultron repeated Avengers run, given how strong the brand has now become, and given that Iron Man 3 earned over 400M.
  9. I don't agree that Frozen is the biggest animated film in the past 20 years. The Lion King? Tarzan? Shrek? Toy Story? Finding Nemo? It's a bit early to say that Frozen has had a bigger cultural impact than some of these.
  10. You can make excuses for all sorts of films. I.e. AS is Bradley Cooper at peak popularity and it's a patriotic film so DOESN'T COUNT! or something.
  11. None of them were part of existing film franchises. Alice in Wonderland is certainly not a franchise. Yes, it's a film based on existing material, but so is American Sniper.
  12. Spider-Man - 114.8M Harry Potter - 90.3M The Hunger Games - 152.5M Alice in Wonderland - 116.1M Iron Man - 98.6M There are some others depending on what you count as a franchise.
  13. I agree. I couldn't stand the hangover, which is all I'd seen him in for a long time, so I just laughed at the idea of him doing serious roles when I saw Silver Linings Playbook. Two hours later, I was a changed person. Not really, most films that have huge ptas in limited release don't gross huge amounts when they go wide.
  14. Oh okay, so semi-finals? I can understand why that'd be popular then. She's stunning Someone gave me a cinema giftcard the other day and I felt really awkward because I have a cinema subscription
  15. Holy shit, 100M viewers? That's like a third of your country. Yeah I know that Superbowl is a big thing, idk what playoff means though. I can't think of anything worse than watching a sports game haha
  16. Forgive me for being ignorant but is american football not on like all the time? Is there a big game or something? I haven't seen it but yeah, if it was showing how awful he was then people would despise the movie as hating the military / soldiers or something.
