  1. Tell us your estimated Maoyan score. It’s flopping on rottentomatoes.
  2. Very down to earth prediction, will need to see Maoyan score tonight to have a better view.
  3. After this release date saga, presales is now stuck and showtimes also not gaining much. I agree with your numbers now... Yeah, very unfortunate. Really a solid film but distributor refuse to put in money to market the film.
  4. Yes, but Bona and IpMan4 weibo did not official say they are changing the dates. All I know is within 12hours, things remain unchanged. Not sure about Government not allowing them to open after 2019
  5. The distributor - Bona Films will be a laughing stock if Eight Hundred doesn't debut. Because IpMan4 was poised to win the weekend with over 500m yuan, really a stupid move. Presales for IpMan4 on Friday is already more than 10m yuan, with few days to go.
  6. Gosh. @Gavin Feng now the question is.. is 800 coming? Or else it will be another dead weekend
  7. Some unofficial weibo post stating IpMan4 changed date to 2020, I doubt so @Gavin Feng do you know?
  8. Feng Xiao Gang’s “Only cloud knows” is having sneak preview on 17th and 18th December. So it will have sneak previews to go against SW: TROS’s sneak previews.
  9. Cold weather, presales are not strong but if weather is good, people will still leave their house on the actual day to buy tickets. So the competition comes in when audience is at the cinema looking at showtimes and deciding which movie to watch. holdovers not strong? Sheep without shepherd seems to be holding well.
  10. Hahaha, I think so as well. As mentioned in the other thread, not sure why Disney wants to squeeze SW in December. A Jan opening nearing CNY night have been better. Cold weather and lots of strong competition right now.
  11. will be close. SW presales are weak, but anything can be changed with strong WoM. I mean Jumanji 2’s WoM is shockingly below average.
  12. Different release date; don’t think this is the way it should be calculated. Wednesday 7pm onwards TROS nation wide sneak previews and Thursday full release is my understanding IpMan4 only release on Friday official.
  13. they are not actually competing, China is so cold now that the overall box office is pretty dim; and if a film can light up the box office then every film wins. Why must you assume it is a zero sum game? but if we want to do it your way: IpMan4 is not a presales heavy movie; it’s a walk-up heavy movie. And also both of them have different release dates, SW is opening on Thurs, with sneak previews on Wed. IpMan4 is on Fri. So far Fri Presales, IpMan4 is 3x of SW. (again, SW is not opening on Fri) i think SW should be more concerned about the immediate threat which is The Sheep without the Shepherd which has opened this week has strong WoM and could kill SW’s momentum even on its Wednesday’s sneak previews.
  14. To be honest, I feel that TROS should stick to Jan2020, just like the previous Two episodes. It tried too hard to squeeze in between the local films to get a December release date. Sheep without shepherd has a strong WoM, and I expect the same for IpMan4(I have watched it) and Feng XiaoGang’s movie which had sneak previews today.
  15. Ya, pretty weak presales to be honest. Many box office Analysts in the country expects much more than that. I think there are certain factors here such as 1) the crazy cold weather, where non of the movies are really doing well. 2) While the official title is “Ip Man 4:The Finale”, both Maoyan and TPP removes “the finale” from the official title, and general audiences are kinda confused as to whether this is just another episode to milk the franchise or are the filmmakers ending this.
  16. Weather is too cold, doesn’t matter the IP / brand or even the actors... people are just not really keen on watching movies. Presales for all movies are weak.
  17. Exactly this, this is what I was thinking. Just like Kung Fu Panda 3 which decided to release days before CNY and then had literally no showtimes when the CNY movies were released; despite KFP3 having better WoM than any single CNY movie release.
  18. Heard that the Maoyan score of Sheep without Shepherd is fake? Also Skyfire playing with some underhanded methods of getting box office.
  19. @Gavin Feng any idea whether SW moving up is because of rumour of 八百showing? i highly doubt so but there are whispers and rumours out there
  20. I think they are just aligning it to other Asian countries (like Singapore and Malaysia where screening starts at 7pm on 18th), not sure whether it’s about confidence..
  21. ip man 3 got killed by Piracy in 2016, where Bluray was released in HK one week from the China theatrical release date. Or else it would have gotten 1bn yuan easily. i caught Ip Man 4: The Finale at the Singapore gala premiere yesterday, and honestly, I think it will score above 9 points on Maoyan score. Action-packed and touching movie, with a very strong message.
