  1. For the record, I don't think Tenet looked all that appealing. I felt the marketing did little to clear up confusion about what the film was about, and that WB was trying to sell it based on Nolan's name alone. Regardless of the pandemic, I think it would've been the weakest opening in 15 years for a Nolan tentpole. Nevertheless. The fact that this is going to be Nolan's first film since The Prestige to not even clear $100M domestic....that is a massive, massive blow that cannot be spinned any other way. Opening a movie during these COVID times is a risk no matter what - you're gonna lose money no matter how many precautions and no matter what movie you have in hands. But this shows just how big a risk it actually is. No studio will be willing to launch their prime blockbusters and risk them earning less than Sonic The Hedgehog domestically. Nolan took a bullet to show that the marketplace is far from ready to get back to business as usual.
  2. Happy New Year, everybody! Can't believe we made it all the way to 2020, the year Sonic the Hedgehog finally makes his way to the big screens, taking the domestic crown with $663M and earning Jim Carrey his long overdue first Oscar nom for his nuanced portrayal of the tormented Dr. Ivo Robotnik. What a time to be alive.
  3. These numbers are genuinely depressing. Shaft's opening in particular bums me out so much. I thought the trailer was hilarious, SLJ is a draw, it looked like effective counter-programming... The fact that every single movie out that doesn't have a Disney label seems to be flopping is discouraging to me as a box-office/movie buff.
  4. Yeah, but if his argument is about sequel fatigue, then Neighbors 2 qualifies as well. That film's dropoff was massive for a sequel released only two years after the original.
  5. With every new update, it seems like Dark Phoenix keeps getting smaller and smaller. At this rate, tomorrow Deadline's just going to announce that the film's theatrical release has been scrapped and it's being released via VOD.
  6. I think you're misremembering things, because Neighbors 2 was absolutely not a hit, lol. It lost like almost a third of its audience from the original.
  7. People freaking out and having meltdowns with a $140-150M second weekend is peak BOT.
  8. .....how? This has to be a typo, right? A 59% RISE from last Friday??
  9. Exhibitor Relations Co.‏ @ERCboxoffice 9 segHá 9 segundos Excelsior...to the extreme. Marvel's AVENGERS: ENDGAME annihilated box office record books debuting with the highest domestic weekend in the known universe w/ $350M. Engrave that one in stone.
  10. 5TH UPDATE, Friday 10:14 PM: And with a snap, Avengers: Endgame is getting bigger, just as expected. Industry estimates as tonight see $157M for Friday (including $60M record previews), which is $37.9Mmore than Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opening and single day record of $119.1M. And as for the weekend, right now the mean is around $349M at the widest theatrical release ever of 4,662. Saturday is expected to ease between -30% and -35% for a take between $102M-$109M.
  11. Sure didn't help The Gone Girl in Charlotte's Web: A New Hope in the Dragon Tattoo Chronicles.
  12. Wait, you think Vice is going to reach The Big Short numbers despite opening significantly lower (in more theaters, no less) and with a C+ Cinemascore? How does that even work?
  13. The two most reliable stars in America: Leonardo DiCaprio and Clint in grumpy grandpa mode.
  14. To be fair, I do think it's kind of funny that the same people who were all excited about releasing Ridiculous Six and The Do-Over took a look at Holmes & Watson and were like "you know what? We'll pass".
  15. Welcome to Marwen with that 171% increase from Christmas Eve, we have found this year's TGS!
  16. Yeah, right, as if Disney would shake anything up. They'll just find another one of their movies to remake. Hope y'all are excited for that inevitable live-action Brother Bear!
