  1. No, it was an event, period. But being R rated cut its raw box office potential. I know you know that an R rated film, even today, can't get the same box office as a PG-13 film. If you weren't around back then, I don't know what to tell you. It was an event. It had jaw dropping, industry revolutionizing effects. It was the subject of massive media attention. It was talked about all across the country. But it was also rated R. And back then that mattered a lot more than it does today (and we both know it still matters).
  2. (xposting with the Mother Thread) Can't say I care about the RT score anymore. The Auidence Score is staying steady at 90% with 8.6/10. Well over 10000 votes this weekend Say it's only fanboys and fangirls voting, that's fine. Point is, the people who have seen it AND are voting on Flixter are giving it positive WOM.
  3. Checking the leaderboard (ie the Real World Section): Thread Bans (as a result of this thread) 0 Forum Bans (for posting spoilers) 0 Oh, I know there's a forum ban from this thread, but it wasn't from posting spoilers and it wasn't a thread ban. === Even if that Forum Ban counts, we're still under on both.
  4. miketheavenger tried to warn us all about this thread. But did we listen? Noooooo.
  5. Gotta admit, I'm disappointed @Grand Moff Tele didn't point this out. --- I mean, I kinda understand it, as T2 level of violence is pretty tame today and it really doesn't seem like an R rated film now. I even had to go back and double check that it was R rated. But that absolutely matted back then when it came to admissions.
  6. Quick Question. Are we SERIOUSLY comparing the gross of R rated films and PG/PG-13 ones? Seriously? Just checking. (T2 was rated R when it came out, in case people forgot)
  7. I'm just sayin' that if the Titanic/Avatar of runs when it comes to animated films isn't an event, I don't what to tell ya'. BTW: I have exactly zero opinion about Frozen. Never seen it, doubt I will any time soon.
  8. (Had to go out to go get dinner so I'm catching up, but this deserves this response)
  9. Let's switch gears here before someone here runs to a dictionary. @MovieMan89 What would your critera be for R1 to show that it is getting 'good WOM'? Not average, not great. Just good. (Might as well move on to something else that's just about as equally nebulous)
  10. 'Event' is all so much marketing buzzspeak though. Turn on the channel and hear how much you hear the word "event" when folks are pitching things. How many times do you hear, "It's the movie event of the Summer"? "It's the movie event of the year!". "It's the event capturing the attention of the nation". I'd even go as far as saying the word 'event' IS meaningless to a large degree. But if we absolutely must define terms, saying a difference between 'event' and 'phenomenon' is absolutely the way to go, And, really, insuinating that the entertainment industry is clueless just because they don't agree with you is... Well... Yeah, no. PS: This very site regularly hypes its sales to tie into what they see as 'events'. I don't know about you, but I LIKE it when they think there is more than one event a year.
  11. And you know as well as I do that comparing the movie viewing environment now to those decades ago is silly. You have your own idiosyncratic defintion of 'event'. That's fine. But the entertainment industry would disagree heavily that there's only one or two movie events in a decade rather than two or three events a year.
  12. It's splitting hairs by this point, but I do draw a disctinction between phenomenon and event. TFA, TDK, Avatar, and Titanic were all phenomenons. Large cultutal impact with buzz all throughout society. But every year were get several movies which are events. CA:CW, BvS, THG (in other years), FD, and yes, R1. They capture the excitement of the movie going community and can explode into greater consciousness if cards are right. For the folks who go to the movies a few times a year, these are the "can't-miss" movies. So I do have a small amount of sympahty for his argument. But, really, IMO he picked the wrong hill to die on.
  13. When R1 has a bigger than TFA drop tomorrow, there will be much smack delivered. Then Discount Tuesday flies in like:
  14. 37 other films all time adjust to over 600 million. You know what that would mean? NOT AN EVENT!!!!!
  15. Being conservative with 39: 71.1 46.3 39.0 156.4 OW. Disney underestimates their numbers once again.
