  1. I'm a rare stone-hearted bastard who was left cold by Cherbourg (aside from the music). Really didn't expect it too. Still wanna see The Young Girls of Rochefort.
  2. Cabaret gets my vote for best movie musical, period. I have a couple of big ones I still haven't seen, but even then it'd take them a lot to beat it.
  3. If you dig Django, True Grit and H8ful that much check out some classic westerns if you haven't.
  4. 1920s: 3 1930s: 1 1940s: 5 1950s: 4 1960s: 15 1970s: 14 1980s: 15 1990s: 19 2000s: 18 2010s: 6
  5. Seen 29 of those movies (all except Aladdin and It's a Wonderful Life), had just 7 of them on my list. Shows you how cool I am.
  6. Well Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a limited release, and Downey and Kilmer in 2005 had nowhere near the draw of Crowe (even if he's left his most bankable days behind) and Gosling in 2016.
  7. If it opens at $15-17m it will be somewhat disappointing but understandable. But lower? Fuck that. What the hell else do you need to do to sell people on this being a good time?
  8. I mean, does it pretend to be anything more than just the Empire State Building for 8 hours?
  9. Being routinely proclaimed the greatest movie of all time over several decades has done Kane more harm than good. It's great, but no movie should have those impossible expectations placed on it. I was so happy when I sat down to watch it and it basically turned out to be an entertaining drama that still feels more modern than almost any other classic Hollywood movie.
  10. I rewatched Shakespeare in Love last year and it's held up better than it had any right to. Since it's obvious The Thin Red Line would never have won, I'm cool with SIL taking Best Picture and Spielberg winning Best Director for the beach landing scene. I was about to get outraged that Heat is only at 77 but saw that for some inexplicable fucking reason it didn't even make the list two out of three times before, so I guess I'll take what I can get.
  11. I admire Taxi Driver more than I enjoy it. Among the De Niro/Scorsese movies centered on awkward/antisocial lead characters, it's The King of Comedy that really hits the spot for me. But I'm not expecting that to show up here.
  12. Looks like Toni Erdmann is the first big Palme contender. Seen dozens of reactions and they're pretty much all ecstatic.
