  2. When it comes to opening weekends, it's around 7.5:1 in Russia. The 2nd and 3rd biggest OWs are OST and SFA with just under $20 million, so I'd say $19-20 million equals US' $150 million milestone. As far as total gross, I'd say 9:1. $50 million has only been reached by 4 films so far, which comfortably puts that number next to USA's $450 million. Meanwhile there is like a dozen of huge recent blockbusters that ended up between $35m and $45m, which roughly translates to $320-420 million in the US box-office.That's a general rule, but there are undeniably exceptions, John Carter being the most recent and obvious one.
  3. Streetcar Named Desire. Saw it once, in March of this year. I was absolutely stunned and in the kind of awe you rarely experience when watching movies. And hands down, the best female performance I've ever witnessed and I don't expect that to ever change. Also Rear Window, Some Like It Hot, All About Eve, 12 Angry Men. I'm not a fan of either Ben Hur or Sunset Boulevard.
  4. Agreed about Hugo. Besides they owe it to him anyway, because in my opinion, Ferretti being snubbed for Shutter Island was an absolute crime. The Artist and War Horse also have a good chance.
  5. Jean Dujardin - The ArtistGeorge Clooney - The DescendantsBrad Pitt - MoneyballGary Oldman - Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyMichael Fassbender - ShameThe field was already strong, and now with those reviews for J. Edgar, Di Caprio is out of the race. I love the guy as much as everybody, but this now can't be and won't be his year. I'm trying to look at it from the bright side here - now he has the perfect opportunity to win his Oscar for Django Unchained. We all know how much better that would be, and it's just one more year of wait. This year, I think Dujardin wins the Oscar with strong competition from Clooney. Oldman and Pitt are there just because they deserve to be nominated, but that's it; meanwhile Fassbender gets most of the critics' love and support.
  6. The Adventures of TintinWar HorseThe ArtistTinker Tailor Soldier SpyThe Girl with the Dragon TattooThat's how I see it right now. I think The Artist and War Horse are going to be the top contenders.
  7. The Artist The Help Moneyball War Horse Young Adult The Descendants Midnight in Paris Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Very tempted to include Extremely Loud, but since zero people have seen it, I won't do it just yet. War Horse has early buzz that's positive enough, and TGWTDT just looks like an absolutely epic film based on the trailer, plus I'm a Fincher fan so give me a little break there. I think The Artist is most likely to win it, with The Help, War Horse, Young Adult and TGWTDT (and possibly Extremely Loud) also in contention. MIP, Moneyball, TTSS and The Descendants have practically no chance imo.

Hope I can get over 50 by the year's end.
  9. Yeah, I watched it four times which is something I very rarely do with new movies. It just had that immediate effect on me, and every time I started watching it again, I was instantly drawn in. It's not even the most enjoyable movie to watch - far from it - but it's just so alive, so dynamic thanks to nothing more than two great actors and a hell of a script. Almost every line of dialogue makes you think, and I often found myself wanting to reply to the characters and participate in the discussion - and there's something great about that feeling. I have to say, while I'm paying less and less attention to the awards shows as years go by, I'm still mystified how the film received zero Emmy nominations, and in general received much less attention compared to Mildred Pierce, Cinema Verite and Too Big to Fail. It might end up the most underseen movie of the year.

  11. Drive Rango Midnight in Paris Submarine Beginners Hanna And a special shout-out to Mildred Pierce and The Sunset Limited which were made for TV but have more cinematic brilliance in them than just about any movie released in theaters this year, with the exception of Drive.
