DDL in Lincoln the one recent biopic performance I actually thought deserved to win tbh. But that's DDL for you. He made it a lived-in performance instead of just showy.

Nah that's all pretty right on. Was a good piece on AV Club recently about the Oscars, comedic performances, and specifically McAdams in Game Night (who I think fully deserved a nomination) echoing your sentiments. It always feels more special to me when someone wins an Oscar for playing at least an original character.

It was working unexpectedly well for me so long as it pretended to stick with the original premise. When it let everything out in the open it pretty much blew itself up. No argument about the son though, if I were Jeremy Irons I'd be pretty embarrassed

Julianne Nicholson in Who We Are Now is the performance of the year for me. Would that more than six people saw it.

When Frances McDormand goes onstage to award Best Actor she should just say Ethan Hawke and dare anyone to correct her.

The Wife falls apart around the halfway mark but Close is pretty superb all through it. I'd much rather see her win than Gaga although I expect I'll like Colman better than both. Haven't seen either BR or Vice but Malek as Redmayne 2.0 isn't a surprising development.

Only just saw that Michel Legrand died. RIP. Really didn't expect it cause he just worked on The Other Side of the Wind months ago. I've basically spent the last two years listening to the Young Girls of Rochefort soundtrack and honestly I'd be fine if I could only have that for the rest of my life.

It was able to do that because the theater count stayed low and the PTAs high. Now it's the reverse. Next week is Superbowl which means a PTA drop and the week after that has 4 wide openers which means a big theater drop. It'll hold on okay but 70+ is out of reach unless it wins Best Picture.
