It seems it was best she was introduced now or else she would have not fit in the MCU in the early days.
They could have made it 100% more intersting if they made Bening's character Phyla-Vell instead of Mar-Vell.
That would give a great opportunity to show Thanos' hinted past (when he talks to Gamora he says that he ignored his destiny once, and he tells Thor that he knows what it's like to lose). Mar-vell was always Thanos' arch rival, and the one of the 2 characters he really respected despite being on the opposite side.On top of that, Phyla is quite popular and comic fans would welcome the cameo.

Quite possibly the most unpopular character marvel has pushed hard. Which is strange, because Monica Rambeau has quite a following and is heavily attached to a team that would be a great addition to the mcu post Thanos, so she would be a much better choice than Carol.

Nah, not really. Carol is not that high in cosmic levels, surely below the true captain marvel, silver surfer, quasar and nova, and all these got their asses handed to them regularly by Thanos. But I'm pretty sure that if he asks for Brie Larson's number the consequences will never be the same.
