  1. Things like this aren't objective. Someone could easily write-up a list of reasons why Star Wars is deeper than Potter. And neither of you would be wrong.
  2. I think both have really rich source material, which are really hard to compare given the mediums they're in. As for the films themselves, it's still hard to compare them IMO. They've both done different things and both have really large fan bases that like going for each others necks . As with all things like this, it's totally subjective what you like more. For me, I've read a lot of comics growing up so I prefer Marvel films. A lot of people grew up reading the Harry Potter series and obviously love those films.
  3. Yeah. The whole franchise seems to be a victim of ballooning salaries on top of increased sequel costs. The originals budget is 180M adjusted and then the subsequent films have had more and more CGI along with those crazy figures for the people involved. It's easy to see how they've got to these insane costs. None of them have flopped yet though, so I can see why Disney keeps throwing money at the franchise. Should be interesting to see where POTC5 ends up. I can definitely see it being the last in the franchise.
  4. @La La Panda was just looking through the FYC's and Hunt for the Wilderpeople actually isn't an Original Screenplay; it's adapted from Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. So swap it over to Best Adapted Screenplay .
  5. Working with water makes your costs shoot up exponentially. Plus Johnny Depp is so integral to the franchise that he can demand an insane amount of money. I think he got paid like $55 million for the last one.
  6. I think someone did mention a 10x multiplier somewhere in the thread. But like you said, it doesn't matter. Great number for Passengers regardless.
  7. If you use assume the 1.6M is in AUD, that does convert to about 1.1M USD. That would give you 11M. I can't recall if DeeCee specified what his figures were in.
  8. La La Land January 2nd, 3:20PM, 90% full Trailers Fifty Shades Darker - Couple of people laughing. I was confused. Is it like an action movie now? Edge of Seventeen - Laughter at the "run-on sentences line" Collateral Beauty Lion Everyone was really into it. Laughs at appropriate moments, some gasps etc. Theatre went quiet at the George Michael line.
  9. It's almost certainly the demographics. NZ has the highest population of Pacific Islanders in the world, if I recall correctly.
  10. And that's a wrap! @DAJK, the stage is now yours. I hope you all enjoyed my list. I had fun making it. Happy new year everyone! Here's a Letterboxd list of my top 25.
  11. Trailer IMDB RT: 93% Box Office: 37.4M + It’s soooooo good. I loved Whiplash, and as soon as I heard that this was in the pipeline I’ve had high expectations that this movie not only met, but exceeded. The soundtrack was great. I’ve pretty much had it on loop since I came out of the movie. Emma Stone is phenomenal and Ryan Gosling is no slouch alongside her. The story is surprisingly bittersweet but ever hopeful. Every frame may as well be sold individually because they look so good. Except that one shot of the mould I guess. All in all, this was my favourite movie of 2016. It did everything right for me. I’m looking forward to seeing it again this evening.
  12. Trailer IMDB RT: 94% Box Office: 150M+ I read the short story before the movie came out, so I was curious to see if Denis Villeneuve could translate such an interesting story to the big screen. Turns out he could. And it turned out amazing. Amy Adams is superb, as per usual. The production design is equally great. Bradford Young gives us some of the most beautiful shots of the year. Jóhann Jóhannsson’s chilling score is a perfect fit for the film. I can’t really think of anything they did wrong. I don’t want to say too much more because this is something I think people should just experience for themselves, but this was an excellent film. Definitely one of the best sci-fi films of the past 15 years, if not all time. I’m a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve so I’m super excited to see how Blade Runner 2049 turns out. And I hope to god that he gets to make that Dune movie.
  13. Trailer IMDB RT: 97% Box Office: 23.2M It feels good knowing that my humble little country can produce a film as great as this. Even though it only cost 2.5M, it looks absolutely stunning, mainly because New Zealand is a really beautiful country. Taika Waititi is quickly becoming one of my favourite directors. Boy was great, What We Do in the Shadows was hilarious and Hunt for the Wilderpeople is, in my opinion, one of the best films of 2016. I’ve gushed about before on here. Borderline shilling at times. But if you watch any movie I’ve put on this list, please let it be this one. And then put it on your top 25 so it gets on the big list . The screenplay is hilarious and touching and the characters are delightful. I just think this movie is really, really good. A decent portion of the film was actually shot in the Waitakere Ranges, which is where I live so maybe that familiarity made me like it more. Also, it’s box office run in NZ was pretty amazing. Similar to Your Name, it’s worth looking up.
