TIL Karen Chen's mother makes her dresses!

When my American History teacher was absent one day he had us watch The Patriot with the instruction to critique it. He was so mad about how many howlers most of the class missed. (Not me!) Part of the problem was definitely that a lot of people thought it was just busy work to fill time when he was absent.

Oh wow, glad to hear that the Cinesphere is re-opening. It's been closed since the start of the pandemic. -

I was one of the top 5's and next time we do an animation list I am quoting the second paragraph from this post in my FYC. -

I've seen both for this and definitely prefer the sub. It's not vastly different but in the places where it is, the dub makes some...strange choices, to put it mildly. -

This has already been weighed in on (oops), but I looked into this a while back and it seems like even the minor chains/independent cinemas survived. The landlord of one of my local independent theatres changed ownership (or something like that) but apparently many of the independent theatres in Toronto (including that one) have heritage protection. (So it's difficult to change the building to a different use.) -

Oh jeez - yeah I mean to say that it makes me *NOT* want to watch it when I'm stressed and tired. Yeah I'm aware of that aspect of it. -

I've had A Silent Voice personally recommended to me twice (by people who know my taste) and it's been on my watchlist but ironically there's been a few times I've put it off because the strength of the recommendation makes me (edit: NOT) want to watch it when I'm stressed/tired etc. Was planning to squeeze it in for this list but didn't quite make it. Going to try and watch this very soon. -

The Breadwinner was on my watchlist (I've seen Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea) but I didn't get around to it. Next time, I promise! Also, I agree about Pocahontas - it's impossible to separate from its historical context but if it were somehow purely fictional I also think it would be remembered more fondly. -

I believe I made it abundantly clear that I understood that The Lion King (2019) was made by a frame-by-frame animation technique. I don't think there is anyone else who doesn't understand this either. Technique just isn't nearly as relevant from the perspective of a viewer than the appearance of the final product. A Scanner Darkly may not be caricatured but it is unmistakeably hand-drawn. When a film appears photorealistic to the the point that an audience can't distinguish it from live-action footage, that crosses an important line that really isn't arbitrary. Regardless of technique, whether it be hand-drawn, stop-motion, or CGI, animation that clearly appears as such can take all kinds of liberties with appearances, facial expressions, physics, colours etc. that would look absurd if it were photorealistic to the point of appearing to be live-action. That's why it makes sense to group together all of those and exclude photorealistic CGI.
-
I'm personally thankful photorealistic CGI animation is being excluded from the list, and I'm not particularly concerned about the exact reasoning that excludes it. Even if the term "animation" technically encompasses photorealistic CGI, I think "cartoon" vs. photorealism is a much more important distinction from the viewer's perspective.

Yes, the longer span between doses was mostly driven by supply considerations. Decisions on theatre reopenings are made at the provincial level. Quebec, which has actually had generally stricter restrictions than Ontario, actually already has theatres open since early March but at reduced capacity. Alberta and BC have theatres being re-opened at reduced capacity in "stage 2", estimated to happen in mid-June. Ontario (almost half of Canadian market) has theatres re-opening in "stage 3" which means we will be waiting until at least mid-July (6 weeks from today) for partial re-opening of theatres. A guideline for metrics to be used for full re-opening (i.e. without capacity restrictions) hasn't been given yet, but if I had to guess, probably mid-August, maybe even as late as early September. -
Top 25 for now, I'll fill in the rest later. Got about a dozen films I'm going to try and watch before the deadline. Beauty and the Beast Princess Mononoke Zootopia Wall-E Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Coco Whisper of the Heart Spirited Away Moana The Tale of the Princess Kayuga The Wind Rises Grave of the Fireflies How To Train Your Dragon Porco Rosso The Incredibles Wolfwalkers My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service Frozen Finding Nemo Castle in the Sky Big Hero 6 Up The Lion King Song of the Sea

I can't help but wonder if Invision's intended functionality was to have the smaller size be default and the slider actually increase the text size, as indicated.
