Has Following the Box Office Lost Its Appeal and Luster?
YM! replied to Noctis's topic in Box Office Discussion
I mean, yes I agree but one could argue that most of these movies outside of Lost City and Sing 2 (depending on where your stance is on Sonic those movies too) are still IP based films. Granted, it’s been that way for a while now but I think the point Eric was arguing is the fact that it seems mainly just four quadrant films are reaping the box office benefits while other genres are struggling or flatlining. I know we’re still in a pandemic and will take a few years to get the demographics back in place for moviegoing and yes these trends were indicative since well 2013 but I understand the sentiment. There’s little room for anything not a tentpole. -
Good teaser and a few cool visuals. I do like they’re selling Thor’s midlife/identity crisis which I something I hope gets a lot more focus aside from a few minutes. The real bummer though isn’t the lack of Bale or lack of great action et cetera but lack of Valkyrie being gay. Show us her girlfriend.

You’re in college too? -
Even then, the situation is different. I don’t think any studio would be happy. Yes, a pandemic is still going on but this is bad for Beasts regardless and there’s not really much to go with in terms of a fourth gross. Also it’s pretty likely Beasts won’t even be in the top ten this year and could miss the top fifteen worldwide as theaters aren’t as stunted now compared to 2021. Plenty of movies doing 400m last year are better successes because returns were better like in the case of Sing 2, had day and date or streaming interfering with grosses such as Godzilla vs Kong or Dune, or part of a franchise consistent enough where the sequel will increase by adding certain characters or because it was well liked like Shang-Chi and Eternals. Not to mention, a good portion of these movies had strong COVID-19 waves when released. I think a fourth movie even though I don’t think the GA really cares anymore just not under the Beasts series which is pretty much dead. They’ll just title it The Legends of Dumbledore: The Wizard War or something and try to distance it but even then I’m not sure there’s much room for interest in the Wizarding World franchise if the GA isn’t on board.

I mean if they say no for fourth Beasts as at absolute best it’ll do Dumbledore numbers, I don’t think Rowling would really care. She could continue the story in another Wizarding world or do a Max series where returns are more satisfactory. A few fans might get upset but it’s not much at most, as $180m-$200m budget for at most $350m-$400m for another isn’t something I see happening.

Okay and she can still have a role in it. I just think having her as a screenwriter when Joanne clearly is not good at harms the franchise more than helping it. She can have say on some plot decisions but get her out of the writing chair. There’s not really much use of Joanne outside of the executive producer chair and the franchise would be better off with her role reduced or without her. Also that’s the way it goes for like most of franchises anyways lol.

All Rowling did for the original eight films was produce the last two films. She really isn’t as needed for the future films Wizarding World and future Potter installments aside outside of an executive producer credit. Yes, she wrote the books but there’s a huge difference in writing a script and writing movies which is something a lot of writers who do both struggle with and it’s clear Rowling struggles with that.

I mean potential aside, 2 out of the three had critical acclaim, all three grossed over $1B and despite the loud minority of people who disliked The Last Jedi had strong audience reception for two thirds. Most of TROS problems came from trying please those who disliked TLJ, but most of the series came from lack of planning.

And we got the best Star Wars movie and one of the best 21st century films from that in The Last Jedi. We also got the worst in The Rise of Skywalker. Still seems like a huge improvement, But the problem from the sequel trilogy was lack of a plan and follow through. Also Rowling didn’t screenwrite the original eight movies nor direct unlike Lucas. I am not sure if she produced either.

Yeah at the end of the day, business wins and even then Rowling has become more of a liability than a help for a multitude of issues and at the end of the day if I’m correct Warner has the other half of the rights. If they got a choice to get the original trio or Rowling, executives and I think most fans and the GA would choose the former. Beasts 4 absolute ceiling is what Dumbledore ends with. She’ll get a cushy executive producer stint for future projects and a nice payday for future films but that’s the best onward.

Menomonee Falls update: The Bad Guys has sold 28 tickets and has done about 25.5% of Sonic 2’s Thursday number ($1.28m without EA, $1.6m with it), which could indicate a 20m opening of lucky. -
CoG had Thanksgiving to even things out whereas I suspect the next weekend drop to be rough due to Good Friday inflation. I also think Strange 2 is killing most things that weekend as it is probably doing 190m-220m OW. With Pets out of May, unless Father of The Bride does the rumored theatrical this June there’s no fudge until Elvis which may be too late.
