its a movie for cinephiles, not general audiences. Not a criticism, just an observation.
(Or to recycle a recent talking point about other films, maybe if it was better it would’ve done better? Nah that’s silly.)
A reminder: people (especially franchise war soldiers) will use incredible mental gymnastics for something they liked (or hated) that isn’t exactly consistent with other things. I mean people wanting to throw a parade for JC’s opening (considering its budget) was a through the looking glass moment for me.
In theory? Possible. In reality it would mean those two would have to settle on a % arrangement both are fine with and well the last time Sony/Disney had to do that regarding anything Spidey…well we Remember what a public mess that became.
I mean they've already financially compensated talents and their backend deals. Have they committed to anything else this year after Dune though? I don't remember.
I think of the new Space Jam, which I watched on Max (which as a subscriber, they already have my $15 something) but it's not something I would've bothered to watch in theaters.
If it made enough money or considered enough of a success, a sequel would probably happen. It’s a business run on profit, not on IMDB scores.
of course this goes into the problem with streaming: what is the metric for “success” on streaming? Box office it’s obviously easier Metric to digest but what is “profit” for streaming outside of scoring more/keeping subscribers? It’s a grey area.
I wasn’t surprised. GvK as a spectacle screamed like something people had to see on the big screen. MK didn’t.
this is why I squirm when people pimp streaming numbers, Max or PA. So much of that is lost dollars/views that would’ve gone into ticket buys.
I like this long term thinking, which unfortunately hasn't historically been one of WB's strongest traits. But who knows? Maybe they've actually changed?
I mean thing is regardless of what TSS and it's $185 million budget does, the Peacemaker show was shot and coming out on Max. It's in their interests to support that investment.
