I'm hearing about some pretty huge numbers in other Asian countries too.

They are bellwhethers for performance so this thing could be headed for a very high WW total indeed, especially with low or weak competitors on the horizon for a while.

$1M+ in presales in South Korea so far.. Part 1 had some very impressive legs there, I think this will challenge for $25M+ in SK.

    what else then?

They have Furiosa a prequel to Oscar nominated Fury Road (which got Director nom too). And Joker Folie a Deux (sp?) a sequel to Oscar nominated Joker (also got Director nom). And there's also Beatlejuice 2 which isn't a sequel to a nominated movie but it's iconic. Lot to choose from though Dune 2 seems in the best position. These raves are hard to surpass.

To be fair most movies doesn’t get 90 on MC anymore now that they can get 75 reviews or so

Not even Oppenheimer or Poor Things get it. Even Zone of Interest just barely get it but with way less reviews.

The main problem for WB is that movies released this early rarely get to win awards, EEAAO doing it was very rare. And of course the academy usually hates genre movies.

Even with likely rave reviews i doubt this have any strong chance in the main category

Dune already got Picture nom so sequel getting better reviews should be no problem. And there was considerable backlash over Denis snub. Not to mention that Dune won 6 Oscars the most that year which puts it at #2 among Picture nominees.

I'm bullish on acting this time around (I knew it wasn't going to happen for the first movie) cause I think that's possible at least for something showy like Butler in supporting and that would considerably help its chances. Actors are the biggest voting block and they usually don't vote for movies that are tech only. But if this managed Ensemble nom and/or indicidual nom(s) than we are talking.

Critics love Walk Hard and have grown to hate conventional musician biopics, especially after Bohemian Rhapsody made $900 million and won 4 Oscars. They want a "reinvention" of the genre, like Rocketman being an actual proper musical, or at least the actors doing their own singing because that's not the dreaded "mimicry". If the Bob Marley movie was entirely set in a recording studio for the making of one specific album, critics would probably rave about how "refreshing" it was not to be a cradle-to-grave biopic.

But general audiences actually like that sort of thing for movies about musicians. They want a live-action PG-13 Wikipedia summary set to well-known music, starring someone with a decent-to-strong resemblance to the real celebrity. Unless it's "too soon" after a star's tragic death, then the biopic will get shunned at the box office.

    well said! :bravo:

Chani in this movie definitely gets more to do compared with in the book where she's basically just an object for Paul to react to. I thought the two had good chemistry. Enough to get out the four quadrant? No idea but Chalamet is at the moment riding high because of Wonka and I think that might help out Dune Part 2's BO a bit. Especially if they market this and the critical reception right.

Paul in the movie also uses her as a springboard for ideas and she reacts regarding her people getting enslaved to the prophecy. Creates this interesting dynamic that wasn't in the book. Also the movie shows her being a badass in her own right.

the book showed she was a bdass in her own right too. She killed some Fremen who came to challenge Paul in a duel for leadership (it was offscreen but was debated in the book) and she was in the battle against Sardaukar and rode a sandworm like the rest of them. I'm glad they address the prophecy in the context of Fremen being enslaved to it cause the prophecy was planted not real which is the whole point. Sounds excellent.

I'm never really good at deciphering how big certain musical acts are in the current zeitgeist and pop culture landscape. I was even down on Elvis for the longest time (though in my defense, it wasn't that I was doubting his popularity, it was more doubting whether old people would show up). But Bob Marley's performance is legit shocking to me. Like even with it being inevitably frontloaded af, its 30M+ 5-Day is what I expected the film to finish at even just a few weeks ago. My thought process was that he was always a "loved, but not idolized" figure a la Aretha Franklin. Is Bob Marley really that big of a deal and I just never noticed?

He is massive. When you go to Jamaica, all tourists take Bob Marley tours be it to his museum in Kingston and/or his brithplace in 9 Miles.

Sneider is more reliable, so I'll take Sneider's word on it. He was right about The Marvels.

Yep and he got shat on for that. Vindication must be sweet. He was also right about Mando and Grogu (Mando movie by his report) being the first SW movie to get made and released. I don't remember his misses (he must have some too all scoopers do) but it's been hit after hit lately.
