Oh, wow! I was already excited for The Belko Experiment, but knowing that James Gunn wrote it?

I haven't read it, but I've seen a huge amount of love for the book (and the author's other works) online, mostly from YA readers. A lot of those people have also said it wasn't what they were expecting at all and that it's kind of difficult to specify the genre, so I guess it makes sense that they've had trouble figuring out the target audience.

This movie has been so much fun to watch with a big audience. Everyone gets so into it. One time there was a guy who was yelling and a big round of applause at the end, and about two seconds later a girl behind me exclaiming "it promotes rape culture!", her boyfriend going "what?!" and the two of them launching into the debate immediately. Also, every time I've gone to see it (three times),

This behemoth is a very worthwhile read: Wall of text incoming (I tried and failed to cut this down any further ): I'm personally not big on framing the values the movie presents as a lesson, because there's a moralizing aspect to that that I find difficult to swallow. I don't go to movies to be told how to live my life, and I don't think this movie is trying to do that, but these ideas really resonate with me. I consider myself an individualist, but I absolutely feel that, as this guy says, the most important things in life are not our dreams or desires, but other people. And that's probably at the heart of why I loved this movie.

They were always selling the "mystery of why they woke up" angle ("there's something they didn't tell us"). I doubt most people heard that line and thought "I bet there's something really edgy about this romance". If they really wanted to use the premise to draw people in, I think they would have gone further than that. Either way, I think there's more to this movie than pretty people on a pretty spaceship, but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

I hadn't noticed that about the ending! I'm really hoping for a director's cut too. Right now I'd love to read the shooting script to see what didn't make it through post. Also, I feel like we've neglected to mention what is clearly the most important issue: how crazy hot they were together. That table makeout practically had me screaming internally. The fact that the actual sex scene was so short, though.
