There's a fresh review on RT now ( guy probably broke the embargo ).
He's a top critic who also gave a fresh review to The Grudge, so that probably doesn't mean much. Other than that, movie is invisible.
It's a dump in every sense of the word. It's a film that was supposed to come out last February and the studio could have rescheduled it for anywhere but they chose to stick it in January.

Still going steady on RT at 76%. 70 reviews. Seems like it's been at that score forever.

Brutal. Hate when this happens.

AH, the old "It's aimed at Kids" defense.
If the film is aimed at kids, they NEVER should have spent 175 Million on it.
Pretty clear that you could make a movie with RDJ reading names out of a phone book and his hard core fanboys would praise it.
WB has their new AI technology analyzing the viability of this as we speak.

I don't know why everyone keeps comparing Gentlemen to Kingsman. Because the posters have the same font? I mean, to me both look a lot different.

I dont remember tracking it. But I tracked cats and even that sold 12K tickets for previews. Turning looks like closing below that.
Yikes. Wonder if Gretel & Hansel will be another step down from that? Horrors might be pretty ugly for you until The Invisible Man.

It had a $1,806,099 OW playing in 486 theatres ($3,716 PTA). I wonder if that's just enough for the studio to expand this wide. I doubt it. Not quite strong enough to project a decent wide opening.

I think so. But uptick has to happen. reviews are not bad either. Turning on the other hand is at ridiculous state. This must be the movie with lowest PS that I have tracked so close to release. 🙂
Did you track the Playmobil movie? Trying to guess which movie previously had the least presales that you tracked...

Yeah, I'm still shocked the Flyers are in the race considering some of the hardships they've had so far this year. But hopefully they can keep it up and they could speak into the playoffs. However, like you said there's a lot of teams kind of close to each other so we'll see what happens
The Pacific Division is nuts! It's a race between 5 teams that are within a point of each other. Going into the All Star break my Canucks are first with 58 points and the next 4 teams (Flames, Oilers. Golden Knights and Coyotes) are tied with 57 points. WIIIIIIDE open.

The wildcard race looks tight. Must be nice to still be in the playoff race unlike my Habs. (I mean Habs are technically still in it but too may teams to leapfrog.)
When are the Habs getting rid of Bergevin??

Am I the only one somewhat irritated by the accusations at this film that there wasn't enough "character"?
Sometimes I find myself asking whether certain critics (online and print) think that every movie needs a sit down scene in which someone tells a traumatic tale from their past where secrets get revealed, otherwise the movie doesn't have enough 'character'. While I think there are perfectly good criticisms to be had of the film (Mendes' first stab at dialogue is hardly flawless for instance, and I get why the commitment to a single motif is going to mean is simply doesn't resonate with some), the 'lack of character' argument seems bizarre. Character is clearly revealed, through action and to a lesser extent dialogue, throughout the whole film. It's a high stakes action environment in what is essentially a workplace, how much of people's personal lives would anyone realistically talk about? Notoriously The Thing got similar criticisms on release.
It strikes me as a remarkably lazy piece of criticism, at least without being supported by clear examples.
It tells me that these critics really do have a manual, or a checklist. If these items (character moments) aren't blatantly obvious, then they're missing. You're absolutely right that the action is telling not only the story but also about the characters.

So, I actually saw this movie tonight, so I can provide comment, especially on family legs:)...and they won't fall off a cliff:).
Only 2 of my kids wanted to see this after the critics - my youngest son and younger teen daughter...and having watched the movie, I'm really sad my older son didn't see it - he'd have loved it. My younger son, the now harsh critic who hasn't given a family movie a full A in months, gave this one an A. My daughter gave it a thumb's up, putting it in my graded area of a B-. And it is a B- movie. The critics have blasted the wrong movie, and as my son says, the audience has it right. Now, my harsh critic spouse gave it a C, but note, he gave it a C...and that's having given 3 family movies last year an F (and we didn't watch Arctic Dogs)...
But really, I know what the critics didn't like. It was a movie that was a throwback 70's/80's family movie in every way, both good and bad. It struggled to decide if it wanted to go full parody, full kid focused, or full action adventure...and it was a low key, low stakes movie, which told a simple story, but told it well, actually following from point a to b to c. But with that said, it's a family movie. Anyone can see and handle this movie.
Even knowing what they didn't like, I'm not sure why this became the pile on hit job from critics. But, I do know when I see all of my family this weekend for a funeral, I might encourage them to see this movie as a pick me up. It's actually themed perfectly for them.
So, on this board, I would ask...before you pile on the movie, go see it, and like my husband, decide it's not for you before you say it's awful. I mean, it's probably not for older male teens and young adults - it's not Pixar in its universality to hit everyone. But it will make moms and dads happy they took their kids...and there aren't that many live-action fantasy action adventure movies that do that...
What are your thoughts on RDJ in this? I heard his performance is one of the biggest beefs with critics.

Considering the unexpected success of this movie so far, and the fact the tagline is "One last time", I'm interested to see how the option is open for more. Seeing it on Saturday!

Just ordered a book containing two Henry James novellas, The Turn of the Screw and In the Cage. Looking forward to reading the former specifically and getting to know the basis of this film. Can't help but feel, even with the existence of The Innocents, that a straight up adaptation of the story would have been better than this modern take.

Have my tickets for Saturday. This is going to be a lot of fun, I just know it! I'm actually doing a Bad Boys/Gentlemen double header!

That's literally impossible.
Anyway, shame about this movie. However, it doesn't look blatantly bad judging by the trailers. There's enough there that I'm interested in seeing it and then deciding for myself. Can you imagine the complete 180 this would do in terms of tracking if EON suddenly, out of the blue, announced that this IS set in the world of Bond? It's not going to happen. but it's an interesting thought.

Man, it really looks like I'm in the minority in terms of liking the look of this movie. Well @Blaze Heatnix and I haha.
To your point Blaze, you're right on the money with the Ari Aster comment. It also has Sophia Lillis in it, who I think did a stellar job in It, so I'm willing to give her a chance here too.

Unfortunate, @TwoMisfits, because I think this movie will be COUNTING on the kids demo. I only have the opinions of a few adults in my circles but my hunch is that most adults who have a feeling of nostalgia towards Sonic don't really care there's a movie. Nostalgia ain't selling this as far as adults go.

Huh. I just mentioned in the Photograph thread that I wasn't missing much by seeing that on Valentine's but I finally decided to watch the trailer for this and.....it looks kinda good?
Yeah, I'm game for this. I'll need my horror fix by this point after the disappointing The Grudge and skipping out completely on the several duds between then and when this comes out.
-
Well, just found out this is what I'll be at the theatre for on Valentine's Day. The other options are Sonic and Fantasy Island so I suppose I'm not missing too much. I would have been up for FI but Sonic doesn't interest me whatsoever.
-
I find myself wondering how much of an adventure epic this is going to be vs. a poignant man/dog friendship story. Admittedly I haven't read the novel but from. There's something about the trailer that just isn't selling me on the epic adventure part, even if that aspect is in plain view in said trailer. I don't know, just having doubts for whatever reason.

Dissapointed they pretty much threw out the HG Wells original novel.
Looks like a pretty generic thriller.
Yeah I mean, I didn't think the trailer looked too bad but I'm wondering why it seems to be tracking for a healthy 30-ish million opening. Feels like this is being hyped up as the "event horror" of the winter amongst the other horror duds in January and February this year.
