RDJ's actual quote about indies. he isn't wrong. his take on them is much more realsitic and much less romanticized:

“No,” said Downey Jr. “Because they’re exhausting and sometimes they suck and then you just go, ‘What was I thinking?’

“But I’m interested in doing all different kinds of movies. Sometimes the little movies are the ones that wind up taking the most out of you because they’re like, ‘Hey, man, we’re just running a couple of days behind. Do you think you can stay through your birthday and then come back on the fourth of July? And, by the way, like the crew – can you pay for the craft services?’”

“‘And, oh, by the way, man, when we go to Sundance, it’s like, can we just sit you in a chair and you can sell this for six days in a row so that we’ll make 180 bucks when it opens in one theater? God, this is so powerful what we’re doing. What do you think of the movie? You saw it last night?’”

    “I thought it’s mediocre.”

“‘Yeah, isn’t it the greatest? Man, everyone’s an artist here.’”

“Actually, most of you are kind of inexperienced and lame.”

I have nothing against indie films whatsoever, but God I love this! Another Hollywood realist.

    Respect.

imo 99% of people have no knowledge of the January dumping ground.

the most release-schedule knowledge most average people know, it seems to me, is - summer has blockbuster films, and winter (Nov - Jan) has awards films.

Yeah, that's pretty much been my experience too.

I know I keep on saying the same thing, but I'm just so thrilled with the reactions to this movie. Seems universally positive. January may have started with some absolute duds, but it looks like we're going to get some gems too.

yes of course your personal life and family is the real success. but as hollywood people with big egos that are already VERY rich im sure she'd rather get a hit movie than 15m dollars. she (they) doesnt need money

i also heard ryan and scarlett divorced because he got jealous of her being more succesful so i hope thats not the reason blake barely works

Do yourself a favour and don't give the media so much credit. That kind of crap is hack material.

What is going to be the biggest film of February?

Nothing seems to stand out at the moment to my knowledge.

Unless if Sonic really goes fast (from what I understand Birds of prey is not getting the best trailer reactions-then again neither is Sonic)

You're right that nothing is really standing out but it's still probably going to be the no-brainer choice: Birds of Prey.

None of my friends see the movies released in January because they “suck,” is a quote ive gotten several times over the years when asking to see a film with a January release.

Hmm, okay. I guess it's just me then. I'm surrounded by people who hardly care about movies (it's usually me taking my friends, girlfriend, parent etc.).

The audience scores for this aren’t bad on IMDB (7.8) so I’m not sure if this is going to get panned.

But in general I just don’t get the idea of moving a movie to January just to dump it. Like if the movie sucks, it’s going to die whether it’s released in January or released any other month. We see terrible (and I mean terrible) movies get released throughout the year and die at the box office. So why not just let these other movies die in their original release dates and release something good? Lol

It would be a shame if this movie ended up good but getting moved to January destroys any BO potential for it.

That's the thing, it would be a waste. Personally I think it looks kinda good. I wish we knew why some of these studios get cold feet, especially seemingly at the last minute.

Id say this is the sort of movie you can wait and watch at home in the comfort of your living room. This was no Dunkirk. The one shot gimmick was good but Children of men did it better without having to do the whole movie like it

Interesting. I'd say it would be the other way around for me. I love, LOVE Christopher Nolan but Dunkirk didn't do much for me. It wasn't poor by any means, but if I had to choose one to see in cinemas it would definitely be 1917.

Isn't a common trope to have a straith competent hero surrounded by pretty flawed/goofy characters, say in a 5th element type, lot of horror movie.

That become a think to some only if there is a gender/anything different identity wise between them ?

Goofy is one thing. Truly incompetent is another, or at least incompetent characters without an arc that shows the audience how useful they truly are.

Which is what has been happening for literally decades, the opposite way round.

That's fair. I know i'm beginning to have a bit of a rep around here but I do genuinely like that we're making strides in terms of how actresses and female characters are presented in film. I just don't think there's a need to simply flip the situation around. You're seeing with the race issue too. I'm not necessarily crying wolf here, but white people are taking a beating lately in pop culture. They're everyone's punching bag. The point is to truly move forward, not simply turn the tables. We can't change the past.

I feel like unless it’s an Oscar film (like American Sniper or 1917) or an MLK release people view any January releases as bad movies. So they may have seen a trailer for this but then saw the release date and thought the studio was just trying to get rid of it. I’m hoping for a mini breakout too but I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen.

Pretty much, yeah. Though is the whole January stigma known amongst the GA? I figured it was just us box office nerds.

Why don’t studios just let the movie die where it was originally intended to release? Not sure when the release date for this was but like just release it and let it die then? I feel like January has the potential to have better box office business but it’s really just become a grave yard for films. Shame.

Also this has a pretty notable cast and I literally had no idea about it until right now.

I know, hey? It's like, okay it's a bust. Just release it and be done with it. Don't hold it back and analyze.

However, maybe this was always meant to release limited first. The box office sites do that a lot, they list certain movies as going wide when they end up releasing limited first. Sometimes the roll-out for a film is announced in a press release, usually for more prestigious projects like when 1917 and Just Mercy were announced to open limited at Christmas and go wide on January 10, but often times nobody knows. You can only take your best guess. In this case, Roadside Attractions has released smaller movies like this wide right off the bat before (Forever My Girl and I Can Only Imagine, both in 2018) so I can see why BOM or The Numbers would have expected this to be a wide release for the studio.

Now if it doesn't release at all, well fuck.

Reading up on the directors on this movie has me a little intrigued. Belgium born, Muslim Moroccan background pairing that have had some indie success, but that seem like they really wanted to play around in a big budget action movie like this. If they can deliver a hit from this, when so many other franchises being dug up from the same era are flopping, they should have some interesting opportunities ahead of them.

Being with Sony on this one, I wonder if they're the next to get slotted into Uncharted.

Yeah, this is kind of my thought too. This movie is a perfect example of when people go "Ugh, they're making ANOTHER one of those? Whyyyy?". If the directors pull this off - which it looks like they DID - then clearly they have a great touch and should go places after this.

I’m interested to see how this does at the box office considering the positive reviews/WOM it’s getting. Wouldn’t be surprised at high teens low twenties but box office is wonky so who knows.

Yeah this seems primed for a mini-breakout. However it all depends if those surprisingly positive reviews translate to the audience. Sometimes the audience doesn't give a crap about a movie, regardless of reviews. Kind of like a Paddington situation.

I could see Bad Boys 3 opening to similar numbers as Ride Along did six years ago ($48M over the 4-day).

All I know is I want to see some films start challenging for around $45M plus. The wide expansion for American Sniper is a total outlier with its $89.27M wide opening. Otherwise, there is a lump of films stuck at the $40M-$42M area and nothing seems to be able to clamour over that.

Bad Boys and Dolittle are both selling awful here. But Victoria is in the middle of a snowstorm (which never happens here... it paralyzes the city) so I can understand why people are reluctant to buy tickets ahead of time when the weather over the next few days is supposed to be very unpredictable.

Unfortunately, I could see this week here being a complete wash.

Yep. Canada in general might bring the box office down a decent chunk. The whole country is experiencing various degrees of this arctic front.
