Um...it was the typical woman power role that's in style now, nothing new...the men are incompetent...that's going on here...
TJ Miller was the standout. Not every (sci-fi) horror film has to be totally dark and gloomy! I liked the comedy relief he brought to the movie.
Ugh, I hate that. Do female characters need the male characters to be brought down just to lift them up? I don't think so.
That's a real shame, especially when Kristen Stewart has limited appeal to begin with for me.

Fantastic movie! The two hours really flew by for me. It could have easily been longer.
Also, I really wish I could have seen it in IMAX but c'est la vie. I don't really need to say why; the cinematography is incredible! I loved any of the scenes in trenches. It was just such an intimate and authentic look at war, especially when you add the single-shot element to it. The score was great, although Joker is still my #1 of the year there. Also I thought George MacKay's performance was a pleasant surprise. Not that I expected the acting to be terrible, but this seemed like a movie where the performances would take a back seat to the visuals and all the technical elements.

Estimated to do about $10M this weekend. It's better than I first thought (around $7.5M) but still not great, given the $800K previews. Several dramas that expanded wide on this particular weekend had greater multis.

It looks really bad, but unfortunately - as @dudalb has noted before - what's bringing it down even more is the date. This looks like a holiday movie to which kids and families might have been more forgiving. Or, if not a holiday movie maybe just a better time of year in general. It feels like at this point - mid January - it might be an easy pass for a lot of folks. If it looked like a better movie it would be a totally different story.
I could be way off though. I'm pretty sure Bad Boys is easily winning the weekend though, barring an insane hold for 1917.

Good to hear! As I've said before, I'm frankly surprised about how much I like the look of this. I'm definitely seeing it next weekend.
Plus, I love Martin Lawrence!

Is that supposed to imply that it takes place in the Tobey Maguire continuity?
Okay, now THAT would get my attention.

r/movies dislikes Captain Marvel and Ant-Man 2 even more tho. GOTG 2 is divisive and Black Panther also gets a crapton of "it was good but overrated" comments. The only solo movies I think they really liked after Dr Strange are the two Spider-man movies and Ragnarok.
If any Marvel franchise could use a new director it's Ant-Man. in my opinion. Nothing personal against Peyton Reed but his follow-up to Ant-Man really wasn't that great. The first one was a solid introduction to the character and his world. It didn't need to be world beating. I think now the character needs a new director with a new voice to lift up the material.

I kind of loved the trailer. It's kind of cliched in almost every way, but it's an effective piece.
Just watched the trailer. I see what you mean @baumer. You'd expect a movie with this subject matter to be cliched, over-done and boring but it actually looks really good. Affleck looks like he gives a good performance. Can definitely imagine myself going to see this.

I hope this isn't too big of a crossover. I realize the title is a dead giveaway and lends itself to a crossover but I think there's enough in the world of Doctor Strange that we don't need to touch on too many other areas or characters of the MCU.

Tatum's kinda fallen out of the spotlight too after he seemed like he was gonna become the next box office superstar for a brief moment earlier in the 2010s (headlined three $100M+ hits in 2012 before White House Down seemed to kill the notion of him being the next). Though getting divorced was probably a time-consumer, and he's been mainly making money off of Magic Mike the past few years with that live show in Las Vegas (he also tried putting together a stage musical adaptation that failed to take off).
Watch, he'll have a renaissance of his own in 5-10 years.

Just watched the first trailer now. Fascinating concept. It actually doesn't look too bad, though at the end of the day it's just another bad-ass action vehicle for Vin Diesel.

I'm trying to remember ever being impressed with a Josh Hartnett performance but can't really claim so, at least as far as that brief period where Hollywood hyped him up as The Next Big Star is concerned (haven't checked out anything he's done since). Maybe he's developed acting chops over the years outside of the limelight.
He was exactly what Channing Tatum is now. I see them as the exact same kind of actor. They even kind of look alike.

Man, Josh Hartnett. I actually completely forgot about that guy. He was the next big heartthrob.

Dolittle's box office could end up being something epic to behold....and not in a good way.

I took my mom to go see I Can Only Imagine a couple years ago and she had a great time.
She caught the trailer for this awhile ago and pretty much announced to me that we'll be doing the same thing for this one.
Okay mom.

This looks incredible! The first scene of the trailer was really effective and the rest showed enough to convince me they're going in an interesting direction for the sequel (as opposed to simply re-hashing more of the first one).

I'm just going to admit it: this movie looks all sorts of delightful! I usually wouldn't have given it a 2nd glance but A) I thought the same thing about the Paddington movies, then gave Paddington 2 a chance and loved it, and B ) the trailer played in front of...something I saw recently.... and I really got a kick out of it.
I could see myself going with my nephew to this if he's interested.

Just now watched the new trailer.
Tough to explain my thoughts. It looks like the kind of movie that's really bad on a technical level, but also good on an entertainment level. It looks like I may walk out of the theatre sort of disappointed in the quality, but if I put it on one night on Netflix I would really enjoy it. Basically means that, to me anyway, the had something there with this movie, but the jury is out on the execution.
Probably won't end up seeing it in theatres, but I'm intrigued at the same time.

That's January for ya. It's where movies that studios have no faith in go to die quick deaths (unless you're an expanding Oscar contender).
You got that right.
Ride Along still has the opening weekend record for a January debut (aka not a December movie going wide in January, like American Sniper, The Revenant, Lone Survivor etc.) with $41,516,170 back in 2014. We've seen typical "dead months" evolve and have big openings and runs at the box office but January is the only weekend that doesn't seem to be changing any time soon. I wonder if any studio will have the guts to debut a tentpole there anytime soon....

Seems to be a lot lighter in tone then the classic Ritchie crime dramas, but still hugely entertaining. I will be there for this one.
I love Ritchie the crime thriller director, never liked Ritchie the big budget extravaganza director very much.
What did you think of his Aladdin?

This was fine. I really liked the ending, but the middle dragged a bit and it was sometimes confusing visually, especially in regards to who is in the suit on screen. But otherwise solidly directed with some nice cinematography and sound work that are good at building tension. Characters were bland but that’s totally expected.
T.J. Miller was AWFUL though. Literally every time he opened his mouth was a joke attempt and not one landed.
6/10
I know you've already mentioned the characters were bland, but how was Kristen Stewart in general?
