    Is the 25 mandatory?

The only movie I'm really waiting on watching is Zone of Interest. I guess All of Us Strangers and American Fiction as well, but I don't see either of those making my top 10.

The one year I did this, I did 10.  If I'm gonna do it again this year, it's again gonna be 10 b/c I don't think I've seen any more movies (in theaters or at home) that deserve to make a year end list...

    The Beekeeper

    Thursday Previews

    T-9

    6 tickets sold

    (0.043x) of Aquaman 2 $193,500

Absolutely zero interest in this movie. I hope the pace improves because if not, this movie is genuinely DOA.

No one will buy til the Atom deal drops...if its DOA then, yeah, it's doomed to not even be Plane (which would be the film I comped it with)...

    Ok your opinion is interesting

I think IO2 will be the biggest hit of the year , Deadpool 3 second and Joker 2 in the third place , Despicable Me 4 and Mufasa complete my top 5 but i think the last movie quoted will fall a lot compared to its predecessor (-60%) . Dune 2 and Sonic 3 ( if the date hold) will pass the 200M Mark

Biggest surprise for me this year : Fall Guys , Garfield, BeetleJuice 2 , Wicked

Deception or flops of the year :

    -Ghostbusters

    - all Sony Movies CBM except maybe Venom 3

    - Argylle ( semi deception)

    - Apes ( I'm agree with you @TwoMisfits but i think for me the deception is due to 3 things : the fact of don't have the main caracter of the last trilogy , not have the same director and the 7 year gap )

    - Bad Boys 4 ( impact of Will Smith Slap and to be opposite the same weekend at IO2 )

    - Gladiator 2 ( the last movies of Scott weren't good success , change of actors and don't have the nostalgia effect for me)

    - Mufasa ( a little deception )

    - Ballerina ( not the Keanu Reeves effect)

Oh, I was only picking from what I got as a trailer...you can see my list in a prior post...

I don’t follow the franchise but is this Apes film the 4th in the newer series, the 3rd or something new?

I went to see the early 2010s one, but that was it.

    It's the 4th...

Do you…not know what the whole premise of these movies are? That’s the whole point of this series since 1968.

It's knowing vs being interested.  Once you've gotten past the humans are bad, let's save the apes part...no one wants to see the aftermath of apes in charge.  They didn't after the 1968 original (b/c the sequels were not as popular), and I doubt folks do now.  It's probably why I quit after #2...

I mean, are you gonna wanna watch Apes treat humans as subhuman for $20 of your own money?  I mean, I already have to watch people do it to other people in real life...why would I want to see animals do it to people?

See, for me, this is visceral...so maybe I'm not gonna be on point for this movie...or maybe the gender skew will be 80-20.

So what is the movie which have the best reaction in the room and the movie which you’re the most interested ?

Of the ones I watched today...if I have to pick one I might watch (separate from Dune 2, b/c I still haven't decided what I'm doing there, but I know what I'm getting with Dune 2), it's probably Fall Guy, but even then I'm not sold...it seems fun, but Gosling doesn't quite have Cruise's "it" factor for these types of movies...

Since it was a mostly empty room (about 25 folks), no real huge reactions and none of the movies won over my spouse and kids for an "OMG, we have to see it"...at least not yet...

Bro liked the Kraven trailer but not the Apes trailer 😭

See, I have wild taste.  I HATED the Apes trailer viscerally.  It's well done visually (no complaints on how it's made), but NOTHING about the movie and the seeming plot is gonna draw me in.  Humans as subhuman - pass.  Humans as slaves of Apes - double pass.  Ugh.  I watched the 1st 2 Apes movies and then quit, so I admit, maybe I'm supposed to be revolted by humanity in the 3rd.  Even then, though...

Furiosa: Fury Road was already a strong hit back in 2015 and its esteem and reputation has only grown over the years. Sadly, this being a prequel does kind of limit things, and trailer reception was surprisingly on the iffy side. I'm also not sure why it's coming out the same weekend as Planet of the Apes. Still, if Miller delivers something on par with that classic, who knows what the ceiling is? But for now, let’s just go with the idea that it’s good, but slightly less impressive than its predecessor. 40/140 (3.5x)

Garfield: This has always been a recognizable and memed franchise, and the trailer has done well in getting animation fans excited and interested. Plus it’s a nostalgic toy commercial, and...well, you know what I have to say about that. Don’t quite think this has the epic breakout chance of a Minions movie or something, but we should be fine either way, and perform better than most animated movies these days. 55/180 (3.27x)

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: The lack of Caesar, the most universally loved aspect of the reboot trilogy, will probably hurt its chances, even outside of War being an underperformer. However, people still like these Apes movies quite a bit and the trailer promises fun action and great special effects. It will need some quality reception that I don’t think Wes Ball can pull off, but even with weak reception, getting close to War seems likely. Let’s be optimistic and say this does deliver. 60/160 (2.67x)

Okay, Apes is under $100M DOM - 1st bomb of the summer...it looks awful to me now that I've seen the trailer.  Not sure who wants to root for "yeah human slaves with Apes, and humans as sub humans", but maybe if you're REALLY into the series...

  9. So, I got to watch a lot of trailers for 2024 movie's today...

And dang, are they leaning HARD into the ROM for The Fall Guy.  I didn't see much COM - instead, it seems like a Tom Cruise action movie, where he always has the love interest as a strong 2nd plot...

Furiosa looked fine, but not my thing.  Dune 2 looks strong, but not my thing (but I may watch that one anyway, b/c I did watch the 1st).  Apes looks awful - like bomb of the summer awful to me...but it's not my thing.  My kids reacted very negatively to Apes, if you want the whisperers reaction.  I missed Bob Marley for a bathroom break, but spouse remembered what I missed so that's something.  Night Swim looks like it always has - a cheap jump scare horror, but those can be fun if they are scary or stupid enough.  The Beekeeper finally figured out it had to show how it related to its title, but my older kids said it still needed more bees.  And Mean Girls was a 10 second ad, so no reaction.

  10. So, I watched Aquaman with the family and an extra college friend of my girls.  Surprisingly, pretty good.  It was everything I wanted from Aquaman.  There is a scene where I said "that's the Aquaman comic solution - Wan just understands the comic hero so well."  I liked this movie better than the 1st.  Now, I didn't really like the 1st, so don't go nuts.  It has a well told story that hangs together, some nice fight scenes out of water, and nice usage of Mera and the other aqua heroes (if anyone was missing, it was Nicole Kidman's character, not Amber Heard's).  It was obvious they decided to cut the story/film to fit what worked the best - the "odd couple" Orm and Arthur and Arthur/his dad/his baby, so some scenes are surprisingly short or seemed like there was 15 more minutes they put in originally.  But, sometimes being a good movie maker is knowing what ended up working on film, and I think we got the best cut of this movie there could be.  That said, my spouse, unlike me, liked the 1st better, but then again, he did like this one.  Here's the grades...

Me - B/B- - everything I want out of a good superhero movie.  A little wonky on the cuts, a few scenes could use better CGI, and it's not all that original - but very satisfied (I gave the 1st movie a C+)

Spouse - B/B- - he gave the 1st an A- - just didn't feel this one as much - it's tough not to be original anymore

    Oldest - B - she liked it

    2nd oldest - "It's a superhero movie" as a grade - she liked it

    3rd oldest - A- - he liked it

youngest - B+ - he also liked it

College Male - A- - he also liked it a lot

Again, a great holiday release b/c no one hates it.  No one really complains about X, Y, or Z with this one.  Was it safe - yes.  But I'm okay with that - I like seeing an uplifting family movie at New Year's...

  11. 2023 Movies I watched in theater (not counting Aquaman 2 today b/c that goes on the 2024 list)

    My 2023 movie theater viewings...

1st run (whether I had free, discounted, or full price - only 1 or 2 were full price:)

    Plane

    Shazam 2

    Dungeons and Dragons

    Super Mario Brothers

    Spiderman: ATSV

    Mission Impossible: DR1

    Sound of Freedom

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: HAT

Blue Beetle (Edit to add - spouse reminded me this was in theater - I thought we watched at home - oops:)

    Five Nights at Freddy's

    Migration

2nd run/kid summer movies at Cinemark

    Mummies

    Paws of Fury
    Lyle, Lyle Crocodile

14 movies in all, so a little under 2022, I think, but about my average.

11 were not sequels - only Shazam, MI, and Spiderman were...of course, I watch a sequel today:)...

  12. Of the previews I've seen, my top 2 movies for 2024 are Garfield and Kraven (I watched it yesterday, and damn, it's good - how does Sony make this trailer and Madame Web's trailer?).  So, I'm excited for the year b/c so many fresher concepts are hitting the screen.  I'm not sure I'll see a movie in Jan/Feb (except Aquaman today), but I'm not sure I won't...

PS = These are not my kid choices, so no "box office whispering" here...just things I think look good from marketing...

My boomer take is that I feel like society today is so closed off; post-pandemic (and partly, but not wholly, because of it) I just feel like so many people have just turned away from social gatherings and activities, movie-going amongst them, and it just sucks 😕 people’s views of each other have just become so negative

That's so true.  I always suggest people take time every day away from their phones/computers (leave them home) and just take a walk.  You'll see people and nature that will reset what you think of the world, and just give your brain a daily breather/reset.  Not to mention the health benefits from a daily 30-60 minute walk...

Kraven the Hunter: Superhero movies are dead. Sony superhero movies? Deader than dead. Next. 20/45 (2.25x)

Yeah, I'm gonna disagree on this one.  I found the red band trailer compelling and fresh.  I'm in the 100M+ DOM train for this one...probably dumb b/c supers are in a big downswing, but I think they live and die on their own terms now, and this one seems like it got a Kraven on screen exactly right...

  15. Oh, and today is the last day to redeem TMobile's $5 off any Atom ticket deal...but you can use it for any showing available at any time...so I used mine for Aquaman tomorrow (discount Tuesday returning with $5 off is a nice thing).  Most of the effect of the deal (if it had any) should be finished by Thursday for holdovers, since they don't tend to have showings posted for the following weekend til Tuesday/Wednesday...

  16. New Ticket Deal for the Color Purple from Cinemark...

Buy TEN tickets, get ONE free...yeah, I don't get it either...who would actually take part in that one?  But that's the deal posted for New Year's to try to push sales to Cinemark...good now for the rest of The Color Purple's run...

How come they never release movies over new years?

B/c you miss the 8-10 day previous corridor of "Saturdays every day", while normally contending with expansions of Oscar movies...while also dealing with the desire of everyone to "get in shape this year", so they spend the next few days at gyms and not movie theaters...

If you want to release New Years, you might as well wait for MLK day, when all the Christmas product is "old"...and folks are ready to watch something new...

It's really not doing well. It's struggling against Migration (which looked basically DOA at opening). I don't think anyone's expecting it to somehow pull out an Avatar 2 or PiB style hold. We need to stop this "Aquaman didn't fail" talk right now.

There is no "Aquaman didn't fail" talk - there's talk of positioning it on how big a failure it was.

For now, it's looking less of a failure than you think it is.  That's okay.  Christmas always helps, and WB ended up incredibly wise for leaving the movie in the slot.

And that's all I'll say at this point b/c now I'm getting bored.

The trades have zero reliability, they're industry shills. We only learned the "real" costs of the Sony movies after the Interview leak, for example. Maybe some dissident within WBD leaks the "real" spending costs, maybe not. But I seriously doubt a movie stuck in post as long as Aquaman 2 was somehow came in with a "normal" budget.

And yet, that would be true for all movies, thus we rely on the trades to compare bombs to flops...and for now, thanks to some Christmas boredom and a friendly star, Aquaman may yet escape this year's string of box office bombs and end up just a flop...

If you think Aquaman actually cost 205 mil with all the reshoots and reedits I have beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.

It is what the trades have reported.  Til we see otherwise, it is the budget.  It does have the advantage of a relatively cheaper cast that would help on budget.  Momoa only got $15M for the movie, and no one else got more than $5M (Kidman) - then it's $2M (Heard and Wilson) for 2 and under $1M for everyone else...

Aquaman DID objectively bomb, only got "saved" by the Christmas release, will still lose boatloads of money thanks to reshoots, and is only getting talked up here now because it's not The Marvels.

It's a sequel to a billion dollar grosser that's struggling to outpace Migration. And it's eating up screens that could go to objectively better movies.

Nah, we have a scale for blockbusters...

Under 1x production budget WW - epic bomb - one of the biggest ever

Under 1.5x production budget WW - bomb

Under 2x production budget WW - flop

Under 2.5x production budget WW - disappointment

With a production budget of $205M, it's still to be seen if Aquaman is a bomb or moves up into only a flop territory...

So, I don't need to rush to watch the series.  Got it.

I'm currently finally starting Season 3 of Upload on Amazon and have a few other series before I get to this one...but if it was great, I might have moved it up...but it sounds like it's not...
