  1. Not sure why I thought you had Suspira in that list (you do not have the slight mention of it).... Never heard of that Red Shows & the 7 dwarfs movies before.... I imagine that was the theatrical one in your 2 out 3 will go in VOD...
  2. Depend of the trailer, but a movie about a bounty hunter we know little about could be a more interesting and fresh proposition to many. that said an over 300m Fett movie would have probably been a worst idea on paper, specially if it is a let see how did Fet captured Solo or something like that.
  3. Amazon got 2,400 theater for Gringo the follow up of Bigger splash / Call me by your name not getting a theatrical release would be a bit surprising no ? Is on a hot streak. Hupper do tend to get theatrical release.
  4. The next Mission Impossible (and the previous 2) seem to be playing that note quite well and arguably the Jurassic Worlds (commercial result speak for itself).
  5. It was the only for who it was the very first piece of marketing (a trailer #2 should do way less) and most popular that was for the day itself right ? https://www.ispot.tv/events/super-bowl-commercials #1 during game day, but down under Doritos & Avengers over time game day: Solo: A Star Wars Story Super Bowl 2018 Online Activity: 12.70% Online Views: 3,173,647 Social Actions: 306,369 Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice Super Bowl 2018 TV Spot, 'Battle' Online Activity: 9.01% Online Views: 1,143,039 Social Actions: 240,771 Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl 2018 Online Activity: 8.86% Online Views: 2,019,846 Social Actions: 217,953 Total run: Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice Super Bowl 2018 TV Spot, 'Battle' Online Activity: 14.01% Online Views: 13,894,129 Social Actions: 1,252,676 #2 Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl 2018 Online Activity: 9.07% Online Views: 18,267,252 Social Actions: 691,752 #3 Solo: A Star Wars Story Super Bowl 2018 Online Activity: 8.60% Online Views: 7,838,975 Social Actions: 777,838 But that would be a bit of chicken and egg talk, did the first trailer wom / phenomenon to catch on online was so bad because the teaser itself was bad or because of some franchise backlash.... we are not much advanced by just looking at raw number like this, we would need to see the trailer "cinemascore" the studio have.
  6. How much do you think that movie with a unknown lead would have done WW (or somewhat known but accept to do pure cash grab movie with no artistic anything for 500k or less) ?
  7. Poor in 2 ways 1) Length, Disney went only with Howard social media account for a long time, the marketing started close to the movie release date for what could have been an event movie, for multiple reason the major one being so close to the The Last Jedi run, with some speculated idea of not wanting to dilute any attention from the main story line sage to the spin-off, but it could something else. 2) Quality, trailers were arguably bad and quite dark, first one did hide Solo almost completely. We are far from the Batman V Superman or Suicide Squad quality, that was audience main contact with this movie, the superbowl spot: It didn't generated much interest, for the first content available at all about a Star Wars movie coming out in just a couple of month: As of 1 a.m. Eastern on Monday, here are the top-viewed ads on game day, according to YouTube: Alexa Loses Her Voice – Amazon Super Bowl LII Commercial Groupon 2018 Super Bowl Commercial: “Who Wouldn’t” Pepsi Generations: “This Is the Pepsi” Bud Light – The Bud Knight “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” – Amazon Prime “Solo: A Star Wars Story” “Westworld” Season 2 – Official Super Bowl Ad – HBO “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” – Official Trailer No. 2 Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” Budweiser 2018 Super Bowl Commercial: “Stand By You” http://admeter.usatoday.com/results/2018 http://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/solo-a-star-wars-story/ https://www.ispot.tv/events/super-bowl-commercials It went quite lower than a doritos vs Mountain dew Ads overall.....
  8. Well that a valid opinion and for many project they actually do. But Baywatch is a pure cash grab, everyone working on that should try to be paid as much as they could no ? Hard to imagine any arguments why not. Why not accept what investor are ready to pay ? The movie probably cost something around 85-95M to finish with that $69m net cost, Florida and specially Georgia having a very generous tax credit program. For that specific example why would Johnson should not have been paid 20M, do you think the movie does not do 25-30m less than that 177M without him almost for sure ? They were probably really happy to have paid him and have is presence save it and turned it into a nice over 2.5x it's budget at that box office, instead of a 55m movie doing 120-150m with someone else.
  9. Nor are they saying that it is all the reason even in public either. But yes obviously there is no baring to what some exec say in a PR move vs what a what when wrong study and polling of audience, etc... will conclude in a month. For example Spider Man 2 under performed in Germany versus other market, so Sony asked a specialized marketing firm to make a study to try to understand why, asking directly 977 German why they went or didn't went to see Spider Man 2 at the cinema, with an estimated effect of not having seen the full length trailer, not having exposed to the reviews, not having seen the first one, not liking the genre, thinking it is only for young people, the impact of the direct competition is evaluated, the quality of the word of mouth is fully evaluated. They score each marketing aspect by seeing what people remembered and what they think were a reason for them to buy a ticket or not. It is quite the detailed 24 pages report people can read. I am confident Disney do the same for most movies in most big market, specially when think go specially well or specially wrong like for Solo.
  10. A Star Wars movie should have succeeded in any environment and make everything else suffer instead of suffering itself and that would have happened 2 year's ago it is 100% true, competition would have mattered all the franchise ads type/production placement/media attention would have been SW, it would have not mattered much. But now that Star Wars lost is big dog status, event movie choose it over other option, it maybe mattered more than expected. The big direct competition for Solo those 4 days made 76.2m, last year big Pirates competition (gotg 2, baywatch, alien Co) made 50m, X-men days of future past direct competition made like 50m. This year memorial weekend was still much bigger than last year (226 vs 180.5), by the same token it was way smaller than X-men Future Past/Furious 6/Hangover 2 year's (232m, 314m and 276m) so it had lot of room to do more.
  11. Happy Madison was funded in 1999, just after is crazy 1998 year: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Madison_Productions Not sure what is your point exactly, if you get the 20m+ first dollar gross and creative freedom without having to do this, why would you take any risk or do any extra work ? My suggestion is that if studio refuse to pay you, you can make the movie outside the studio system, even if the 6 studio collude and say ok we all stop to pay them more than 10m ever including bonus on a movie like suggested.
  12. “There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?” says Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said to The Hollywood Reporter this weekend. “We have a lot of work to do in trying to understand this,” says Hollis. “We are all over it and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did in various markets. We have a year and a half before ‘Episode IX’ comes out.” I was going to suggest to look in market were Infinity War was not popular to see if Solo drop was different than others, but those do not really exist in a big enough number to have a relevant sample size I imagine.... A movie like Solo would have had such a giant audience 17 or above and 17+ that are not parent with their child I am not sure if the R-rated factor of deadpool make it something to dismiss, the fact that Deadpool drop seem to have been made worst by Solo and not just for loosing high ticket price screen seem to indicate a shared audience. Awaken and rogue one were both around 67% above 25 year's old, Last Jedi 68% above 25. Considering the 17 to 25 are a huge proportion of ticket buyer usually (he 18-24 alone buy 16% of the tickets yearly, adding the 17 and 25 to this would probably push that around 20%), we could imagine a 85-90% able to buy R-rated ticket audience share for those star wars opening....
  13. 15. Sandler is a good example of that, developing/making/producing the movie himself and selling them at a huge blackbox price to a studio instead of being paid a salary by someone. Cruise, DiCaprio, Walhberg lot of them have their own production company being involved in what they do and could probably decide to do like Sandler if they were offered a very low pay cap. It can bit you in the ass sure but that was not your or my point I think. You statement if I resume it correctly was not just a moral one, but I took it: Studio should refuse to a compensation deal that would ever gave more than 9.5m to an actor, would it be Bullock in Gravity, Depp returning for a pirate sequel or Johnson/DiCaprio next project. My point is those actor does not have to do a studio financed movie were they are simply paid employee if the deal is not good enough, a studio need to buy their participation in there project with in competition everyone else that would accept to finance that actor project. The decision is not between paying them less than 10m or more, it is doing movie involving them or not, if they could pay them less I imagine they would.
  16. Trolling is not about being right or wrong, the best trolling is often done by using true facts. Trolling is using a language not to engage in a fruitful conversation at the maximum you could but using a language instead of an other that have no other possible intent that provoking readers into an emotional response.
  17. Club are not market specific in that section, you can make them worldwide performance for example and we have very famous club about China performance gross, the most iconic being about Blackhat over 100m.
  18. Everyone engaging in some one source/one cause for an action is almost certainly wrong. Those shows, music, games or imagery glorified are not necessarily causing the distress in all case (in very few case, usually when involving something really strong like religion you can see that happening too people with a long history of reasonable life, no identifiable brain illness engaging into extreme behavior in just 6 month), but can orient the action or trigger the little difference between passing to the act or not, everybody has mental issues all around the world how they act with it change from culture to culture and do not lead to school shooting at the sate rate, who they target for example can be affected by the zeitgeist (that said for your specific example, everybody is playing call of duty). And there is 2 different and distinct subject here, the scientific claim did a show/art expression that is massively seen has a reasonable risk of having effect X that can be talked about. Than a different claim that this is effect is a big enough one to do something about it, one that make it ok to try to force people into censorship and so on. Who decide what is dangerous enough and for who ?, etc.... There is some strange extreme that take it so far, if a cast member of a Netflix TV show scream racial stuff in real life, the show should be cancelled !?!! What about a sound guy, a grip or a PA ? What does has simple actor in real life has anything to do with any of this ?
  19. Did people blamed Last Jedi 1.332 billion biggest movie of the year on sexist nerds ? Half of the time by using so much sarcasm and shortcut I do not understand people point they are making at all.
  20. I am also a bit curious. Would it be a bit similar if Elizabeth 2 or one other UK crown representant in Canada would actually use their constitution power to choose something instead of just saying yes to everything the Canadian parliament say them to do, that would cause some commotion. Lot of system are not has good as the american one, with a lot of rules that are not written done and just tradition that people agree to respect, in Canada Primer minister is a barely defined role, that could become anyone un-elected tomorrow with a ridiculous amount of power.
  21. Not sure what you mean by stats going, but sport tend to split regular season and playoff stats (and record) You just have to add them manually : https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html James played 9870 minutes in the playoff (versus 44298 in the regular season) The most all time: https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/mp_career_p.html He just got above Duncan.
  22. Not sure why you assume they didn't thought it was likely, the speed they reacted tend to show that they had a plan in place because they expected it would happen, would not even surprise me if they had contractual clause about it. It is all just a conspiracy and spin to hide the Solo breakdown: “Disney (NYSE:DIS) shares are down 2.6% after ABC announces an abrupt cancellation of hit show Roseanne, a reaction to a racist tweet the show's star posted earlier.”
