  1. well the buzz around a new star wars movie was not similar to the buzz around a non avengers Marvel movies, different scale completely, at least in the USA and some markets. It will go down from the most talked movie of the year, biggest box office of the year (often record breaking), absolute everywhere for months that was A new hope/Phantom Menace/Force Awaken to yes just like Marvel movies.
  2. Actor saying they have an hard time watching themselve, but the movie is really good when they are not on screen is pretty common. The older actor not caring about being frank about their movies during junket, like Jeremy Iron, Hamill, etc... I do not know I imagine if the movie underperform they must be irked by it and really love the Dwayne Johnson/Arnold type that sell sell, push no matter what to the end. If the movie play as expected and it was from a legend that "earned" the right to be critical they probably do not care as much.
  3. I watched all of those case and never find no one saying that argued critics and the trailer being bad was because of sexism, always talking in the context if you read/watched before the "ruined my childhood" type of talk was because of sexism (a mistake and a not knowing fandom that goes crazy without it maybe, but an important distinction). Evertime people pointed that, never brought a case of someone serious saying that if you do not like Ghostbuster or that the critics about is filmmaking prowess were because of sexism, it was always deforming someone saying that the over the top and strong reaction of some was because of sexism. People brought year's old interview out of context of Paul feig and fabricated a story and people had confirmation bias from there. That was Paul Feig positions:
  4. I thought Thor 3 was going to have more theater than Justice League ? Did I misunderstood, did it change ?
  5. Never find one, any time I had that conversation of the past and people pointed to someone (specially of people involved in the movie) they always shifted people that expressed hate or made a big deal out of a bad movie being probably sexist to people that didn't like it are probably sexist (that no one serious ever said). Be curious, but every instance I encountered was a strawmen.
  6. That was a mostly a strawman and not a ghostbuster defence I have ever heard from someone serious. No one ever said you are sexist if you do not like Ghostbuster 2016, if you are making a big deal out of that summer movie more than the hundreds of bad one that we got before and after it too..... that is suspicious.
  7. Even with franchise front-loading, it should be compensated with better word of mouth (A- Cinemascore) that bode very well for going 160/190m (it is making 186% of Passenger has of now), if it does a 35/65 dbo/intl like it easily could, oh my, 455m to 545m WW, been a while that Sony didn't had that big of a success without any asterix I think, maybe Baby Driver could count for that, but that is a sequel possible type of movie.
  8. That explain the japan/australian/france drop you are right, when condition were the other way around like the UK https://www.statista.com/statistics/285737/cinema-box-office-revenue-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/ UK box office was larger and pound didn't move to USD (using june) 2012: 1.554780 2015: 1.557244 Japan yen 2012: Jun 0.012613 2015: Jun 0.008079
  9. But is it a talking point ? Did anyone even insinuated such thing on this board or a strawmen like for Ghostbuster ?
  10. Is anyone pushing that ? I mean Last Jedi is of the new entries the movie the most about white men's, with Ren and Luke being the main 2 characthers versus the more diverse main protagonist of Force Awaken/Rogue One, I saw people saying people are wrong to say that is racist, sexist fanboys, but I don't think I ever anyone say that it was the case. People that developped an habbit and skills to downvote stuff online and those doing it for Last Jedi probably are (strong correlation, but no causation) would not be surprising, people just not liking The Last Jedi ? Did anyone said that.
  11. Did someone calculated how much AoU dropped from Avengers in the "traditionnal" market versus the growing one ? Domestic, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia etc...The market star wars is big in. Avengers Ultron Domestic : 623,357,910->459,005,868 UK: 80,563,081 -> 76,623,201 Australia: 54,385,465->30,969,152 France: 37,765,919->34,270,887 Germany: 30,828,359->31,193,932 Japan: 45,256,010->26,373,434 Total top 6 star wars market hold for Ultron from Avengers: 872.12 -> 658.39, 75.5% hold That type of hold would mean around 1551m for Last Jedi, could go lower. MCU had a couple of nice advantage for it to sustain is box office, obviously bringing some new popular characther and growing popularity of some of the characthers in it. But also it achieved to enter into new and growing market like china, brazil, mexico, south korea way more ? Smaller legacy of previous title for those market to catchup with ? Felt more fresh and colorful if they watched the previous entry they missed ?
  12. Probably too big on an event, well reviewed and trust in place to have people turned away by the runtime, like it could for a very long Transformer entry or unknown title.
  13. I thought they didn't touch much if touch at all tax on dividend, is it an indirect way to save on those ? Or just people will receive more of them because of corporate tax cut ?
  14. Could it a larger than usual amount of tickets being bought online for Star Wars (because it is playing in large part in designated sitting room, rare to be that big of a movie that you are still better to buy your ticket a bit an advance to have good seat even mid week after the release, etc...) ?
  15. Was he hating the early 2000s Clooney-Pitt remake as much as this new 2018 remake ? If he treated both remake as harshly because he is a big fan of the legendary original and is legendary cast it is one thing, if not it is a bit suspicious. That is true, but no one has any issue with someone disliking the trailer, it is only and 100% only about those making a big deal out of a trailer, downvoting it, going around complaining about it, etc...
  16. I think because JL and star released the same day, making the comparison more direct and more surprising for the small Star to do more than Justice League after the same numbers of days into release than Thor 3 that was released weeks before them and was not expected to be close to JL at this point.
  17. For one yes, franchise will tend to score the most, but the issue people are talking about tend to be issue that those superfans have, those low score on some platform started right away, from those rushing to see it opening night that was pooled, that were the sensation that from the millions fans that rushed to see it Thursday/Friday/Saturday that it is a minority that feel it is a 1/10 type of disaster.
  18. That sound probable, but everyone that would ever have an opinion about that movie (or any movie) will always be on that boat, except for special screening event type of people and those has the I am feeling special to have seen it before everyone else experience that is a worst bias. And it is those people opinion that matter.
  19. Harris poll year's later, comscore type exit poll are probably the closest, more than ticket sale, almost everyone that buy a ticket buy the ticket before seeing the movie after all, home video performance among ticket buyer is maybe a better metric than ticket sales if we had it.
  20. This, I am not sure people are not saying there is not some Internet disaprovable of the movie. The question is more, how many non-random negative reaction about movie that will be seen by 200 million people does it need to become relevant ? 5 millions of them ? 10 million ? That is a lot and not something one can manually look up by himself. The example of avatar is not a bad one, would not be easy to find a more bashed movie on the Internet, yet: Yet the list of the movie that openned at 20m or more with a better multiplier in history: Mrs. Doubtfire, Forest Gump, Titanic And those were all below 25m openning. It got an A cinemascore, was one of the best selling bluray on the domestic market for a long time (while selling more dvds than bluray being released in 2010) : https://www.the-numbers.com/alltime-bluray-sales-chart 1 Frozen 7,528,209 $159,290,829 Mar 18, 2014 2 Avatar 7,410,171 $163,439,047 Apr 22, 2010 3 Despicable Me 2 5,931,537 $115,192,392 Dec 10, 2013 4 Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens 5,758,728 $147,098,346 Apr 1, 2016 5 The Avengers 5,237,630 $119,939,644 Sep 25, 2012 6 Beauty and the Beast 4,461,804 $101,673,635 Oct 8, 2002 7 Jurassic World 4,053,126 $93,635,782 Oct 20, 2015 8 The Dark Knight Rises 3,940,789 $80,265,630 Dec 4, 2012 9 Guardians of the Galaxy 3,921,372 $82,350,359 Dec 9, 2014 10 Despicable Me 3,756,383 $77,749,481 Dec 14, 2010 Is there any randomize data ever showing Avatar not has widely beloved ?
  21. That is a really good example of a big delta between vocal Internet and general population, Titanic also back in the days if you hanged out with young boys you could think the movie word of mouth was not that good. Around 20% of Americans thought Avatar should win best picture that year, more than even Blind side: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20100305005220/en/Americans-Avatar-Win-Picture-Oscar-Sunday Forest Gump/Gone with the wind would be other one example of movie with a lot of Internet nick pick, you can find a lot of criticism about them, yet Forest Gump was a top 10 favorite amongs Americans in 2008, Gone With the Wind was Americans favorite movie in 2008 and 2014. For movie everyone saw and have a lot of public loves, you will normally be able to find a lot of negativity about it specially if the target audience for that negativity is young male.
  22. That is even optimistic for China, maybe it will not be in the top 5 market for TLJ this time. Force awaken: Domestic - 900+m UK - 164m China - 124m Germany - 111m Japan - 97m France - 88m Australia - 67m If China drop to say around 60-70m, could go from 3rd market to 5-7.
  23. EST are I think really high margin toward the studio: Still, the margin on EST is so much greater than on its digital counterparts that studios can’t ignore it. At an investor’s day earlier this year, Time Warner disclosed that HD EST contributed $17.50 per transaction — $14 more than what VOD gets, and $16 more than SVOD. http://variety.com/2013/biz/news/dvd-sales-decline-effect-studios-1200600256/ Because it is so easy to get movie for free online, that coupon abuser must not be common.
