    Seems both of these are primarily lease related.  Having a lower volume location in a metro area where rents are high is about the worst possible combination given the current market: fixed cost up, revenue down. That’s why a lot of closures are happening in places like CA, NY, FL, etc 

    The landmarks also show the sorts of movies that don’t exactly do big business.

    And you can’t simply reduce movies budgets no matter what. Nope needed to cost 70M, the money is imprinted in every frame of that movie, it’s absurd to think the movie should look worse because it would serve the studio better. 
     

    Just because we like to discuss numbers doesn’t mean we need to treat art completely as products that need to bow to profit. 

    I mean, you don’t have to like it, but studio movies are commercial products first and foremost. They get financed to provide profit to the backers not just to enrich human experience or whatever. You can do movies as art before product too of course — you just need someone willing to bankroll it. Big budget wise what comes to mind is Shyamalan fully financing his own movies and Laika being bankrolled at a loss by Knight’s daddy Nike bucks.
     

    And AI tools are great for making art, using it to generate animation is a great idea that will inevitably become the primary mode of production.

    Couldn’t see this reception coming, but the Fri sales were pretty yikes the whole way through plus relatively predictable +10ish Sat -single sun taking 1.6x to a 6x.

    Do you think making $30 instead of $20 in Japan has some big impact on profitability?   
     

    The DOM legs were good enough that it’ll be fine but still a pretty uninspiring ROI with the gross vs budget.

    I didn't quite pull the trigger on sub 10 and sub 6x midpoints until the final week but I have been hammering away at stuff in the 50-65 zone being very possible for about a month yeah (since first day of PS).

    No, directors aren't generally a big component of what makes me excited for a movie.   

     

    As far as that component goes though I would say:

    Gunn -- significant trust 

    Mangold -- moderate trust

    Andy -- negative trust
