  1. Avatar's soundtrack is probably at the top of my all-time favorite OSTs (alongside The Grifters [by Elmer Bernstein], Wonder Woman [Rupert Gregson Williams] and John Williams' Star Wars). Has there been any announcement in regard to who will replace the late great James Horner for the Avatar sequel's music?
  2. So another White Savior film that helps white audiences feel a little less guilty about racism is celebrated by Hollywood. And another film about an LGBTQ person is sugarcoated and sanitized to appeal to hetero audiences is also celebrated by the industry. How is this any different from the last...forever? Hollywood will Hollywood.
  3. I hate that so many people consider AMATW an underperformer. It was a well received sequel that outgrossed its predecessor domestic, overseas, and globally. Considering the character is nothing like the major icons of Marvel, you need to have some perspective. Even Aquaman was an iconic character that, despite being sort of a joke, was well known to everyone and their grandma (thanks to Super Friends and a conspicuous presence in pop culture throughout the years). And Black Panther had an incredibly potent sociocultural impact (and catered to an audience that was hungry to see itself on the big screen as a superhero, not unlike what happened with Wonder Woman) that helped the film explode at the box office despite the character not being that well known. Ant-Man and the Wasp made all it was going to make, and it was a sizable hit. But we cannot expect every superhero film to gross Infinity War/Black Panther numbers. Captain Marvel will be a solid hit, but I already hate that it will also be called "a so-so performer" when it inevitable does not make as much as Wonder Woman domestically or as much as an Avengers film worldwide.
  4. Oh, yeah! Certainly. And we all know that WB is reshuffling their plans in order to fast-track an epic Atlantis-battles-Themyscira film that will pit the amazons versus the Atlanteans. Wonder Woman V Aquaman: Dawn of the 2 Billion Worldwide Gross
  5. I also bet that the long filming means that the movie is a mess and the script sucks and Gal Gadot cannot act and Patty Jenkins is being a demanding diva, and Steve Trevor is having temper tantrums in his trailer and Kristen Wiig is not working as a dramatic actress and Pedro Pascal's reveal as Darkseid in disguise is testing poorly with audiences. This will flop.
  6. Regardless of previous appearances as established characters in team-up films , the characters got their solo origins told in their solo films, so yeah... Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Aquaman are all solo origin superhero films.
  7. Yikes. I do like Jennifer Lopez, but I feel that the only person who sabotaged her career was herself. I don't blame her for wanting to strike while the iron was hot and getting all the endorsements and business ventures that were thrown at her when she was an A-lister, but sometimes I wish she had not started a music career. She became so enamored of being a star, that she forgot about acting. I wish she had continued developing her movie stardom in a platform that made way for more movies like Out of Sight, My Family, and Selena, and fewer films like Monster-In -Law and Maid in Manhattan (although, again, one cant be blamed for going where the money is). As it is, I wish her the best, and I truly would love if someone like Tarantino or Scorcese used her in a movie that totally makes us stand up and say, "WOW...I never imagined Jlo could do that!" Maybe she will be cast in the In The Heights movie...
  8. Again, in my opinion, superhero films (just like most action spectacles) that people remember the most are those in which audiences care about the characters and care about the emotions at play (not the ones that have the most amazing special effects). If they can create a compelling emotional arc for Cyborg (and I can think of several ways they could; his origin lends itself to powerful emotional beats) that captures audiences heart, it will be a hit. And yes, I think that Black Panther and Spiderverse having successful runs with black leads can only help Cyborg... A better design of the armor and better FX is all good, but it's the character that will make people come back for seconds.
  9. At this point, I will not dismiss anything about what Aquaman can do. Nobody thought it would do well, let alone very well, and that is exactly what it's doing.
  10. A multiplier of 6 for Aquabro would be amazing, and it would mean that, once again, DC needs to let Batman and Superman take a break for a while, and focus on their newly minted superhero stars like Wondy and Arthur. Now I think is a great time to actually go put Cyborg back on track. I firmly believe that a Cyborg movie could be a big hit (a Flash film also, of course).
  11. Seeing that list makes me wonder about a potential biopic of Madonna. She has been such a major force in music and such a public, in-your-face, divisive artist...I am curious in regard to how a film about her life would do at the box office. Wasn't there a highly acclaimed unproduced script about her life floating around Hollywood? What happened to that?
  12. I agree. I mean, all superhero stories could be revisited and perceived as inherently ridiculous. It's part of the genre: a demigoddess from a race of female warriors becoming a superhero is not any more "ridiculous" than a teenager getting spider-powers because a radioactive spider bit him or an alcoholic millionaire creating a super-armor that lets him breathe in space, withstand blows from the Hulk, and shoot energy blasts from his hands.
  13. ^^^I have to admit that the out of the trenches scene in Wonder Woman had me all choked up, I wonder if the sequel will have something akin to that in terms of emotional potency.
  14. And to think that so many people I knew predicted Aquaman to flop! Oddly enough, Aquaman (just like his fellow DC heroes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) was just as big an icon as them; the difference is that, although everyone and their mother had heard of Aquaman, he wasn't exactly known for being a cool superhero that kids aspired to be like. He was pretty much an iconic joke. The film certainly cements him as yet another DC icon that people actually love. And also interesting: after Batman V Superman debuted, many people felt confident in Wonder Woman possibly becoming a hit due to how well received the character and Gal Gadot were in their appearance on the divisive Snyder action fest. Aquaman, on the other hand, was not particularly singled out (or Momoa for that matter) as a highlight of Justice League. The success of Aquaman rests entirely on the film itself, including director, plot, and special effects. And its cast created magic guided by a talented director (Wan).
  15. A well crafted Batman film based on "Batman: The Long Halloween" (and one that pushes its PG-13 rating to its most extreme edge) and released in October would destroy the box office.
  16. Why are they predicting an increase for Spiderverse but a decrease for Aquaman? Are they not both superhero films that would arguably be frontloaded? On the other hand, don't they both have solid word of mouth and family appeal? Should they not both increase? And why an increase for Mary Poppins but a decrease for Bumblebee? Are they not both family-friendly films with great word of mouth?
  17. It seems to me like a very effective horror trailer (creepy, disturbing, strikingly bizarre) that doesn't spell out every plot point. The trailer continues the posters' usage of potentially iconic imagery (bunnies, the scissors with the sorta faces-shaped handles, the "clone" family standing in the driveway, etc.) If someone had told me that the black chubby dude from MAD TV and the Key and Peel comedy team would end up being an Oscar-winning director of horror thrillers that explore complex social issues, I would have laughed them out of the room. This is one of my five most anticipated films of 2019 (with Captain Marvel, Shazam, Gemini Man, and the Aladdin live action remake).
